меня приколола фраза про олдскульный альбом. а тиргарден это типа современный или футуристический рок альбом чтоли?))))) как раз мне кажется он то и олдскульный по саунды, записан через жопу со всякими невнятными звуками.
Новости про Машину это конешно круто, но даже думать не хочеца это еще через года 2 как минимум до того времени у Коргны совсем шарики за ролики заедут. в общем можем тупо не дождаться.

Hey everybody, William Patrick Corgan here, Smashing Pumpkins. I'm excited to make this big announcement. So I'll start with the current SP news. We've got one more song, it's gonna come out I think in about a week, hopefully end of April/beginning of May. The song 'Owata' is gonna be our 10th Teargarden release. We're excited about that, we're really happy with that. After that, we're gonna take a break, and we're gonna do something a little different- we're actually gonna go in the studio and record a full album, old-school style. Even though I pronounced the album "dead", I guess I still wanna do another one. So, it's gonna be called, we're gonna call it Oceania, and uh- Oceania? Oceania, that's how you say it. So we're calling it the "album within the album". So it is part of the Teargarden project, and we figure it'll be about 9/10/11 songs. Most of the songs are already written, and we're just finishing them up now. We're gonna go in the studio in May-June-July, and hopefully it'll be out September 1st, that's the general plan. And then we're also looking into possibly doing some touring in August- I've heard everything from possible America to possible Europe. But we definitely wanna come back to Europe either way, so we're trying to sort that out. So I don't know if we'll do America then Europe, or just Europe & then America later...
OK, so now for the other news: We finally, after about 9-10 years of negotiating, have finally secured the rights to all the unreleased material in the Pumpkins archives, both stuff that we possess, and the stuff that EMI, our old record label has. And as part of that, we're gonna re-issue all the albums. So by Christmas this year, Gish, Siamese Dream and Pisces Iscariot will all come out re-issued, re-mastered, with some extra tracks, unreleased things. And then in 2012, you'll see Mellon Collie, Aeroplane Flies High, and Adore. And all this stuff will also be on vinyl, we'll do really high-grade vinyl re-issues. And then in 2013, we'll have Machina I & Machina II put together, finally, in the correct running order. Might even possibly re-mix all of that stuff, 'cause I know through the years not everyone's liked those mixes, uh- heheh. I'd actually be interested to re-mix the stuff. But everything will be re-mastered, so we'll see Machina I & Machina II together in 2013, and then also a Greatist Hits.
The cool thing is, is what we've arranged to do, in coordination with EMI, is to create sort of a digital box set. And the great thing about the rights that we've secured is that, we have the ability to put out any of the unreleased stuff, any time we want, any way we want. We don't have to work it out with EMI. That's why it's taken so long to negotiate, and so it's a really cool thing. They're thinking forward, into the future, and I'm very excited. So this allows us a ton of flexibility, so you'll see everything from free stuff, that we own- I've just recently in search of stuff, & I've found like, y'know, early Pumpkin practices from 1987. There's concerts, there's videos, there's of course the famed "last show"- sorry about that, heh. And so there's tons of stuff, and so we're sorting that all out now. But the great thing is, is there's nothing standing now between our ability to get the stuff together & put it out. And I'm looking forward to having the albums re-issued and re-mastered, and hopefully introduce a new generation to the, great legacy of the band, which, you know, we worked very hard to have lots of stuff that could one day be looked at again, and, you know, um, so... That's very close to my heart, is putting out those albums again, and being able to put some of the live stuff & the unreleased stuff out in coordination with it.
So I think that pretty much covers it. I'm sure I forgot something. Can you think of anything I forgot? No? No, that's it.

ну, у Пёл Джем-то первый альбом вообще вроде как пересводили заново, у Коргана только относительно Машины такие планы, а вообще сложно сказать насколько изменится звук. Гиш уже пару раз слегка ремастировали, первый раз в 94-м, но отличий не заметно.
мне вот больше интересно, что за бонусы будут на переизданиях и что будет издаваться в цифровом виде параллельно с переизданиями альбомов. круто было бы к каждому альбому получить второй диск со всеми бисайдами и ауттейками плюс в цифровом варианте все демки и кучу лайвов

On the future: “I think there’s a nice balance that can be achieved between the past, the present and the future. But for me, it always starts with the future. The Pumpkins have always been about trying to push forward.”
On the forthcoming unreleased material: “I found a tape of me and James Iha at the very beginning of the band, and we’re sitting in my bedroom recording my songs. It’s like we were doing a mini bedroom concert. Why I was documenting to that level, I don’t know.”
On albums vs. EPs: “We felt good about the EP format for a while, but it’s only taken us so far. I think it’s time to refocus everybody on what we’re trying to accomplish here by making a full album.”
On the future of the album: “I still stand by my view that I don’t think albums are particularly relevant at this time. … Nobody I know listen to albums anymore. … But for me, from a writing point of view, it’s really going to focus me to put a group of songs together that are supposed to go together. … The one-song-at-a-time thing has, in many ways, turned this into a singles format. It puts so much pressure on the one song we’re releasing, and people then read more into it than they should.”
On California vs. Chicago: “I’ve had more positive experiences in California during the last five years than I’ve had at home. Home just doesn’t seem like home to me anymore, in many ways. California feels more like home, but Chicago’s where I feel the most myself.”
On the current line-up: “At the end of the day, we’ll be judged as a group whether we get it done, and I think Oceania will be a really big statement to prove whether or not we belong.”
On his former bandmates: “For people who think that the old band worked because of the tension, I would say there might have been moments where it did, but ultimately it took away more than it gave. … [T]he heights that we did reach look very lofty in hindsight, and people think that’s as far as we could have gone. We would’ve gone way further if some people would’ve just gone to fucking rehab.”

Rolling Stone published an interview by Greg Prato with Billy Corgan today which offers some details about the kind of and the scope of bonus materials that are to be released along with the reissues of Gish, Siamese Dream, and Pisces Iscariot this fall.
- EMI would like a bonus disc of material. I think what it’s going to have to be is a balance between some of the better B-sides that somebody who bought Gish back in the day wouldn’t be familiar with. I want it to be a document about the materials that surrounded the records, so if you’re a fan of that record, you kind of get more of that record. But I want to be really selective and not just put out anything. I want it to be almost like a nice mix tape – if you’re a fan of Gish, then the Gish bonus disc would have some really cool stuff to listen to that’s in that period.
And lest you think you’ve heard everything there is to hear…
- I’ve gone on some message boards to see what fans are saying, and they think they’ve heard everything and they haven’t. There’s a lot of stuff we have that no one’s ever heard.
The interview also included an interesting story about how William Corgan, Sr. influenced young Billy’s development as a guitarist.
- My father was a guitar player, and I was raised with a super high standard of what good guitar playing was. I’d be in the living room practicing, and he’d walk by and shake his head, like, “That ain’t gonna fly.” So when I came into indie music, I had already been playing serious heavy metal/Yngwie Malmsteen solos. When I first started playing in front of alternative crowds, they were like, “What’s with the solos?” It was probably because I came from a metal background of practicing and my father’s very jaundiced eye about my ability, and wasn’t really influenced by the alternative mindset about guitar, which was “Don’t try too hard.“
Prato also got Corgan to reveal his current secret guitarist crush, Richie Blackmore of Deep Purple and Rainbow, the one person who he hasn’t worked with yet that he most hopes to someday.
When asked to describe what the upcoming Oceania release will sound like, Billy offered these thoughts from his friends who have apparently already heard the Oceania Basement Tapes.
- My friends said that it reminds them of what they always liked about the Pumpkins, but it sounds fresh. It has a familiarity to it, which is kind of hard to put your finger on it, but at the same time, it doesn’t sound like, “Oh, it’s the same.”
And in the not-exactly breaking news category, the interview closes out with the obligatory re-reunion question, where Billy categorically rules out ever appearing on stage with James Iha or D’arcy again, but pointedly not Jimmy Chamberlin.

Billy, Nicole and Mike were there watching the whole thing from the seats. Billy seemed to be in work mode, at times going back stage or talking with the director… I talked briefly with Nicole and Mike. Nicole said that she’s still mixing the Cold and Lovely record and wouldn’t get back to it till Oceania was done. She said she’d be in Chicago a couple more weeks. Mike said that he was almost done with drum tracks for Oceania and that he’d put down drums for 12 songs. I asked where Jeff was and Nicole said he wasn’t in Chicago yet, but was flying in next week to start working on guitars.

Acclaimed mastering engineer Bob Ludwig of Gateway Mastering has finished work on an impending reissue of the Smashing Pumpkins album Gish, part of that band’s archives project. Ludwig has previously worked with, well, uh, everyone.
Here’s a bit of an interview from 2003 in which Ludwig talks shop:
MusicTAP: What is the usual process from when Gateway is contacted for a project to the final release?
Bob Ludwig: Someone calls us and schedules a day I can work on their record. Either I do it alone, or the producer and sometimes, artists attend. The day arrives, I listen to their raw tape and hear in my head how I think it could sound. I turn the knobs on the right gear to make it sound like I hear it in my head. I master it, discuss if any remixing needs to be done and do any further editing that needs to be done. When the artist, producer, A&R person and the manager all agree I have gotten as much musicality out of their original master tape as possible, the approved master is copied to the appropriate medium desired by the plant (PCM 1630, exabyte DDP tape, Pre-master CD-R, or Yellow Book CD-ROM). The actual parts going to the plant are quality controlled from top to bottom by one of my engineers, usually with headphones to catch problems one can’t hear in speakers, and notes are made of any abnormal sounds that are in fact approved.

всего-то 2 диска и dvd, не так уж и жирно. Думаешь дорого будет? Ну, как мне говорит моя интуиция, не дороже чем юбилейное издание Nevermind в честь 20-летия, вот уж его точно возьму, без вопросов. Да и вряд ли дороже, чем мне пришлось отдать за те же бокс-сэты Tool, Morphine и Pumpkins (Аэроплан Летит Высоко)

Sun-Times: Corgan to write theme for film about Nelson Algren
Bill Zwecker reports for the Chicago tabloid:
Rocker Billy Corgan has volunteered to write the Chicago theme music for the upcoming Michael Caplan film about Nelson Algren — featuring some 200 of Corgan pal Art Shay’s Algren photos as backgrounds.
Recently Caplan, associate chair of film and video at Columbia College, filmed Shay, his wife Florence and Corgan on their memories of Algren in Florence’s Highland Park book shop, Titles.
Corgan recalled a tough Chicago neighborhood where he, as young as age 4, was taken to bars where he was “surrounded by Algren’s Division Street characters.”
The website for Caplan’s company Montrose Pictures is soliciting donations in support of “Algren—The Movie,” described as “the first feature length documentary that spotlights the creative legacy of one of the most underrated American writers of the twentieth century.” A social fundraising campaign launched by Caplan in June failed to reach its goal.

Corgan cited Queen II as an “album that changed his life” as far back as 1993. Queen reissues their final five albums on Tuesday.

According to Carina Round’s official website, Billy Corgan has contributed guitar to her track “Got to Go (LA Song)”, to be released on her new album due out in Spring 2012.
Prior to a recent live performance, Round describes the song as “about being really fucked up all the time in L.A.”
Round, a semi-frequent collaborator with Corgan, is set to release the first single and video from the album on November 8. That track, “The Last Time,” features another known Corgan collaborator, Sierra Swan.
Round is also featured on the new Puscifer album Conditions of My Parole, due out October 18. You can hear her on the Puscifer single “Man Overboard,” which she co-wrote.

Billboard’s Mitchell Peters has a new interview with Butch Vig regarding Nevermind, the famed Nirvana album that Vig produced and that was released twenty years ago this month. An excerpt:
[Peters:] How did working on “Nevermind” raise your profile as a producer?
[Vig:] The record completely changed my life. It opened up so many doors. I had been doing a lot of underground work with independent labels. And all of a sudden, all of the major labels were calling and I was able to pick and choose the projects I wanted to do. It’s safe to say that the record changed the lives of those who were closely involved. Early on it sort of freaked me out, because I realized that I’d never have a record as big and commercially successful. You have to sort of put it over on one side and say, “I still want to make music and move forward.”
If I hadn’t done that record I don’t know if I would’ve been able to work with Sonic Youth or Smashing Pumpkins. And I wouldn’t have been able to start Garbage and do that, because it opened so many doors and allowed me to have an interesting career that I’m still luckily having — knock on wood.
While Vig’s first work for Sonic Youth was on the post-Nevermind album Dirty, he had produced the Smashing Pumpkins both on the 1990 seven-inch “Tristessa” and on the 1991 album Gish, issued on Caroline Records in May that year. On the Pumpkins’ 1994 video release Vieuphoria, Vig explained how he got together with the group:
The first thing I worked with [Smashing Pumpkins] on was a Sub Pop single. Jonathan [Poneman] from Sub Pop called me up and said, “There’s this band from Chicago that is awesome and you’ve gotta work with them.”
Vig also told the hookup story when he appeared in 2008 on “Sound Opinions,” the syndicated radio program hosted by Chicago rock critics Greg Kot and Jim DeRogatis:
Vig: I think even those records [done at Smart Studios in the late 1980s and early 1990s] were fast and kind of down and dirty, I think they sort of did have a vibe, and you could hear the hooks when there were hooks. I think that’s why I got a lot of work, really. And that’s why, I mean, it just sort of snowballed…that whole indie scene led to me, you know, working with…Billy Corgan heard those records, and that’s why he called me from the Pumpkins.
DeRogatis: Corgan comes out there to do that Pumpkins record, and I guess that’s the real superstar…first act that put you on…first time you had a record on the Billboard charts.
Vig: Yeah, and I mean, I loved working with Billy, because he’s very intense and very driven, but when we made Gish, that was the first album where we actually had time…I was like, “oh my God, we have like 30 days to make a record,” and we worked like 14 or 15 hours every day for those 30 days to, you know, just to try to make it sonically…take it to another level.

По словам Билли, этот диск станет переломным пунктом в карьере коллектива. Реакция на него покажет, стоит ли музыкантам продолжать работать дальше.
«Если мы почувствуем, что с выходом «Oceania» люди начнут проявлять заинтересованность и атмосфера вокруг нас оживится, то следующие три-четре года будут очень интересными для группы, - говорит Корган. – Но если он столкнется с теми же препятствиями, что встречались на нашем пути и раньше, нам придется отступить назад и серьезно задуматься о перспективах дальнейшей работы».
«Oceania», которая станет первым полноформатным релизом со времен выпуска альбома «Zeitgeist» в 2007-м, увидит свет в ноябре сего года. В поддержку альбома запланировано турне по США и Европе. Американская часть гастролей продлится с 5 по 22 октября, после чего – в начале ноября – стартует европейская.
Напомним, что «Oceania» является частью 44-трековой песенной коллекции «Teargarden By Kaleidescope», к оформлению которой Билли и его коллеги приступили в 2009-м году. В течение последнего года музыканты периодически выкладывали законченные композиции на своем официальном сайте.

“Yeah, but we’d really rather have you be a lion trainer.” That is what it feels like.
BW: So is this the dilemma that faces young musicians today?
BC: It feels like somebody is always telling you to be different than you are. You start to realize that it’s a manipulation to control you, because somehow they get it through their heads that by controlling you they’re going to make more profit. The funny thing is that if they’d actually find people that they believe in and support they’d make more money.
Crestfallen.com: What is the greatest quality that each of the band members brings to the Smashing Pumpkins?
Billy Corgan: Jeff, in many ways, is a far superior guitar player to me. He raises the quality of my playing in order to keep up with him. His integrity level for the pure vision of Smashing Pumpkins is very, very high, very, very high. And he’s a total musicologist, and he gets it, and he really understands where we can still go. He’s probably the number-one person in the band right now who’s saying “We can do this. We can do this.” And believe me, I’m just one guy…there’s a lot of the world, there’s a lot of opinions in the world about a person like me. And sometimes it takes that person inside to go, “You’re doing it, keep going. I believe in you.” I know that may sound insignificant to somebody who’s an asshole, but it means something to me.
It means a lot to me that Jeff stood by me through the Fillmore and all the insanity. Notice how we haven’t played San Francisco since, you know what I mean? They’ll never have us back because of those shows. But those shows have everything to do with what’s going on now. We had to die in that show, Jeff with me. He had to bust that guitar… The whole thing was about, “What is this? Who are you people? What are we doing here? What happened to our musical dream? Is this just a joke now?” We had to go through that kind of death together.

The Amazon listings for deluxe editions of Gish and Siamese Dream posted earlier this week have been updated with additional information and photos. Both are listed at $28.99 and are due out on November 29.

The DVDs are to contain complete videos of concerts at Metro in Chicago from 1990 (for Gish) and 1993 (for Siamese Dream).
Both sets are also to include postcards; Gish‘s postcards feature six “never-before-seen” band photos, while Siamese Dream‘s feature the original 13 album collages.
Finally, both sets feature “reimagined” cover artwork and a 24-page booklet with lyrics and commentary from Billy Corgan and music critic David Wild.
Tentative tracklistings for the bonus CDs were given to fans attending a meetup in Los Angeles on October 5. The tracklistings shown to fans in LA reflected 18 tracks for both Gish and Siamese Dream, but according to Amazon, Gish is to have 15 bonus tracks and Siamese Dream 17.
UPDATE (10/17):
It seems Amazon has pulled both listings for the moment. According to fans who attended a meetup preceding Saturday’s concert in Detroit, the listings were not supposed to appear until later, to coincide with their appearance on band’s official site.

The Smashing Pumpkins’ official website now sports a page devoted to the band’s reissue project. The band is offering multiple formats for the Gish and Siamese Dream reissues, including digital downloads, vinyl, CD, and a 2CD/DVD box set, all of which can be pre-ordered now.
The release date is confirmed as November 29.
Basic information on the “deluxe edition” boxes matches up with that listed and then delisted on Amazon over the weekend. To recap, each set is priced at $30 and contains the remastered album on one CD, a second CD of bonus tracks, and one DVD, plus extensive liner notes and postcards. Each DVD features the band performing live at Chicago’s Metro: the band’s August 25, 1990 show figures on the Gish disc while the Siamese Dream DVD has the August 14, 1993 show.

- The only exception is Crush, since the tape for that song was stolen at some point and was not found; someone just cut off the piece of tape for the song and glued the tape back together so it couldn’t be easily noticed. The DAT backup had to be used for the remaster of that track. Kerry said that the results were very close to what they were able to achieve when remastering directly from the tapes, though.
- The Siamese Dream concert is a multicamera show from JBTV and according to Kerry has never been shown in its entirety anywhere. It runs for over an hour.
- The Gish concert is about 40 mins, so as a bonus they added an acoustic practice session of Crush from 1994 (which is exactly not chronologically correct, but fits the spirit of the DVD).
- The idea behind Kerry remixing the songs from the 1992 Soundworks sessions (Starla, Moleasskiss & Plume) for the reissues is to take them to the level of “finished” material. According to Kerry, Starla was meant to be just a demo and was finished very quickly. His remix attempts to take to the level of other released songs.
- USSR is a song they discovered recently and neither of them remembered at all. It seems like it could be a song we haven’t heard yet.
- Kerry indicated that both USA and USSR were never-before-heard
- He showed us an instrumental version of Frail and Bedazzled (supposedly to be included in the Siamese Dream reissue, but now seems to be the free download track), and it is a very interesting version where Corgan was trying to figure out some solo licks for the final song.

В результате использовали для ремастеринга этой песни DAT backup, Керри Браун утверждает, что в итоге песня зазвучала так, как если бы её ремастеринг был выполнен с оригинальной плёнки
- Сиамская Мечта концерт снят на несколько камер для JBTV, и, соласно Керри Брауну, никогда нигде не показывался. Продолжительность данного выступления составляет около 1 часа
- Гиш концерт идёт около 40 минут. Так что они добавили в качестве бонуса акустические репетиции песни "Crush" из 1994 года (что не совсем хронологически верно, но подходит по духу для DVD)
- песня "USSR" была найдена совсем недавно, и никто из них не помнит её
(упоротые они там все что-ли были во время записи в начале 90-х?)
- Керри сказал, что "USSR" и "USA" - ранее не издавались и никто их не слышал
(ну вот, а я думал, что "USA" это "Geek USA", оказывается нет)
- идея Керри Брауна перемикшировать заново песни времён Soundworks Sessions (1992) (Starla, Moleasskiss & Plume) для переизданий состояла в том, чтобы довести их до ума, так сказать, вывести их на уровень законченного материала (to take them to the level of “finished” material). Согласно Брауну, та же "Starla" была всего лишь демкой и была записана очень быстро. Его (Керри) ремикс - это попытка дотянуть песню до должного уровня уже других выпущенных песен.
(т.е. насколько я понял, та версия Старлы, которая вышла на Pisces Iscariot, по их мнению теперь говно, хаха)
- так же Керри Браун представил инструментальную версию песни "Frail & Bedazzled", которая, как предпологалось, должна была войти в переиздание Siamese Dream, но теперь будет просто треком, доступным для бесплатного скачивания

As the Smashing Pumpkins’ tour of Europe gets underway in Sweden, Billboard’s Gary Graff has posted a new interview with bandleader Billy Corgan regarding unreleased Pumpkins music and the upcoming reissues of first albums Gish and Siamese Dream. Corgan kicks up expectations for the latter, calling the sound of the remastered Siamese Dream “stunning,” “shocking,” and “a real massive upgrade,” but he warns that unreleased Smashing Pumpkins material may not measure up:
- Because we released so many of our extra songs, we’re not sitting on some magic treasure trove of great songs that no one’s ever heard. We never made the great lost record or anything like that. It’s more an insight into the process, or a different take on something.

The campaign continues in 2012 with the release of 1995's "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness," the 1996 box set "The Aeroplane Flies High" and 1998's "Adore," while 2000's "Machina/The Machines of God" and "Machina II: The Friends & Enemies of Modern Music" will be packaged together in 2013
