Skysaw revamps LP, will support Minus the Bear on tour
Both a reader of blog The Machine Somehow and a poster to the SmashingPumpkins.com message board say they were told Monday night by Skysaw drummer Jimmy Chamberlin that the next time his renamed band’s album Great Civilizations comes out, it will have more tracks than when it was released with six songs back in November.
Chamberlin also tipped fans to Skysaw’s spring touring plans, saying they will ride in support of their Dangerbird Records labelmates Minus the Bear, who put on a “great show” when fan Mike Byrne saw them at Coachella in 2008. Minus the Bear has a 14-date tour of the southern U.S. planned for May and June, and venue websites for at least two of the dates already list Skysaw as performing with them.
Chamberlin: “I always wanted to be in this role, as a songwriter.”
Jimmy Chamberlin, the musician who’s done many things, has been interviewed by Spin Magazine about his new band Skysaw and his former band the Smashing Pumpkins.
Chamberlin talks about recording Skysaw’s album Great Civilizations, cops to living in the suburbs, and explains how he was introduced to pretty Skysaw frontman Mike Reina. Spin’s William Goodman also wanted to explore Chamberlin’s relationship with Pumpkins leader Billy Corgan, and the drummer obliged the interviewer with several remarks.
Here’s a mildly dramatic excerpt from the end of Goodman’s article:
“It’s important for Billy [Corgan] to carry on as the Pumpkins — that’s a lot of his ownership and a big part of his personality,” says Chamberlin, who explains that he and Corgan are friends “from a distance.” “He’s an extremely talented musician, fantastic songwriter, and a great guy at getting what he needs. But as time went on it became less and less about my journey and more about facilitating someone else’s.”
“I’ve learned that you can call it a band, but unless everyone is contributing it’s not really,” says Chamberlin. “It’s pretending that it’s a band. I wasn’t interested in creating another experience like that. Skysaw is predicated on a three-way split.”
He adds, “That situation [with the Pumpkins] placed constraints and a parameter on my career that’s wasn’t always easy to deal with. That can stagnate your growth as a musician. Not anymore.”
Chamberlin speaks about Pumpkins reissues, Byrne, Complex
Suburban Apologist has posted an interview with Skysaw’s Jimmy Chamberlin and Mike Reina, in which Chamberlin speaks a bit about the upcoming Smashing Pumpkins reissues, Pumpkins drummer Mike Byrne, and his other band the Jimmy Chamberlin Complex.
Highlights from Chamberlin:
On the Smashing Pumpkins reissues: “I am very excited. Those records are sacred to me and I’m thrilled that they will be Repackaged and marketed to another generation. The Pumpkins still have a lot to offer, old and new I’m sure.”
On Mike Byrne: “I think Mike is perfect for what Billy is doing now; a great drummer with an extremely bright future.”
On the Jimmy Chamberlin Complex: “The complex lives and will rise up again at some point. Mohler and I started working on stuff before I left the Pumpkins and we continue to do so. It’s really just a time issue. We are both very busy these days.”

Jimmy Chamberlin: The Ex-Smashing Pumpkins Drummer Takes a New Direction with Skysaw
A jazz and fusion fanatic with a mind for song craft, Jimmy Chamberlin was the perfect engine to power one of the boldest, most dominant rock bands of the 1990s, the Smashing Pumpkins. With their majestic rock epics, sweeping pop hooks, and grand thematic gestures, the Pumpkins gave Chamberlin an ideal opportunity to take his place among the most identifiable timekeepers of his generation.
These days Chamberlin is focusing on a new band, Skysaw, with whom he gets to revisit drumming concepts he’s long been interested in—but in a distinctly new format. In the November 2011 issue of Modern Drummer magazine, we honor Jimmy’s accomplishments in the second installment of our Influences feature series. Here we talk with Jimmy about some of the drummers who have been influential on him, as well as his latest musical direction.
Jimmy Chamberlin told attendees of a drum clinic in Chicago on Thursday night that he has left Skysaw, this the rock band he formed in 2009 with singer Mike Reina.
During the clinic, hosted by instrument retailer Chicago Music Exchange, Chamberlin demonstrated several drum parts from his repertoire, including the Smashing Pumpkins classics “Tonight, Tonight” and “Geek U.S.A.” along with a few Jimmy Chamberlin Complex numbers. Chamberlin also explained why the clinic had been rescheduled from a week earlier: He’d sliced his thumb while putting a mailbox together, badly enough to require treatment at a local emergency room.
Skysaw released one album, Great Civilizations, which in its final form went on sale during June 2011. A supporting tour comprised about 15 concerts.

Details on Chamberlin's Jazz Record
According to the Chicago Tribune, the record (which should be released sometime this year) promises to be "a high-powered, high-energy affair."
"It's definitely a jazz album," says Frank Catalano of his partnership with Chamberlain and [Percy] Jones.
"Yeah, Percy has played on Brian Eno records, and Chamberlin with the Smashing Pumpkins, obviously, but they're such good players in a jazz setting too.
"I knew it would be a powerful trio, but it has ballads also."
BillCo fired Chamberlin in 2009, and in 2010 told Rolling Stone, “Jimmy is a destructive human being, and people who are destructive break things. I don’t see me reaching the highest levels of my creativity if I’m unhealthy and if I have unhealthy people around me.[...]” After BillCo told Jimmy he was out, Jimmy unloaded on Billy. BillCo responded, “I was like, ‘Fuck you.’ Go ride around in a white van for the rest of your life.”
Could a Corgan/Chamberlin reunion be on the cards, with talk of 25th anniversary shows coming up?
