Welcome to the second Archive Newsletter. I am now entering the third week on the job, and I just want to say that I’m really excited about the project. I want to get into the more technical details about the archive. One of the biggest problems with storing media that is over 20 years old is tape deterioration. One example of this is the Ignoffo Demos. Mark Ignoffo was a studio engineer that worked with the band in 1988-89. The band would record demos at Reel Time Studios and then sell them at shows. The Moon Demo was a demo tape that was sold at shows in 1989 for $5. The songs from this period would include Stars Fall In, Daughter, and Bye June. These songs have been widely bootlegged out, but the quality has been questionable because many of these were sourced from old cassette tapes. The band has the original reels from those recording sessions in the archive. Throughout the years, these tapes have started to deteriorate and flake. Recently, the band has started to rescue these recordings. A technique to rescue tapes that are starting to flake is through baking. The tapes would be placed in an oven, and baked for a specific period of time. This restores the tape so that it can be transferred. In these cases, we often have one chance to transfer the tape before the tape is lost for good. The Ignoffo Demos were baked for 72 hours! Then they ran them through Pro Tools at 24-bit/96kHz, and the outcome was amazing. They sound so much better than the bootlegged versions that fans have. This would definitely be an upgrade if you already have these songs.
The next step is to rescue other tapes and reels that have started to deteriorate. All of the material in the archive is stored in a climate controlled environment in order to preserve them, and slow down the effects of time. Tapes and reels aren’t the only material that we have to carefully monitor. Paper is another concern for us. I’m currently going through and cataloging the band’s posters. I have found some early posters from the Gish era, and there are a few that have started to show their age. A way to combat this is to store them in acid-free polyester Mylar sleeves. The Library of Congress also uses the same types of sleeves for archival storage. I’m creating a system that will catalog and preserve all of the posters and artwork from the band. Eventually this system will include all of the promotional material that I’ve talked about in my recent blog post. I hope this sheds some light on what we’ve been doing. I’ll talk to you all next week!

This is the 6th newsletter for the Archives mailing list. I've been here for over 6 weeks, reading and talking to fans about how we should put out the archives. During these past few weeks, we've put out the idea of a subscription service where we would charge $300 a year for 200 releases. We received a lot of feedback, and there are three issues that keep coming back. The first one (a major one) is cost. The majority of fans who have contacted me through e-mail and on the message board have flat out said that they can't afford it. The second issue is that there is a line drawn in the sand between people who want only studio outtakes and demos, and the people who want live shows. I on the other hand am the type of fan who wants everything. Back when I collected everything I could get my hands on with U2, I didn't care what it was. I wanted everything. I even have CD's of drum takes from the Achtung Baby sessions. I just thought there was a lot more people who shared the same sentiment. The third issue is that people wanted CD's. They didn't want to spend the money on digital downloads. People want artwork, liner notes, and something they can hold.
We're going to make some changes to the business model. The first thing we're going to do is throw the $300 subscription service model out the window. The next thing we're going to do is set up a fan club for the band. There will be details about this very soon on SP.com. We're going to look at including a limited edition CD of rare tracks as a special gift if you're a fan club member. Next we're going to sell hard copy releases from the archives. This will be CD's (possibly vinyl) with liner notes, and a special package. These releases will be limited to not much higher than the total number of fan club members. If you're a member of the fan club, you will have GUARANTEED access to purchase these releases. If you're not a fan club member, we will sell whatever is left over once the fan club members have purchased their copies. There might be cases where we might not have any left to sell once fan club members purchase theirs. If you want access to this, you'll want to be a fan club member. The reasoning for tying in the archival releases to the fan club is to get a good perspective on how many copies to print, and what material we'll make available. We know that there are going to be people out there that won't care about the fan club and will rip and torrent this material. I can say that only fan club members will be the ones that will work with us to figure out what to release next, and will be an integral part of documenting the band through picture and sound. If you want to be part of the small community that will have a special relationship with the band, the fan club is the way to go.
I have another piece of good news. We're going to start putting releases out as soon as possible! We're going to start with the early days of the band. Billy talked about the lawsuit with EMI a couple weeks ago. Nothing has changed with the lawsuit; we're still working that out. We're not going to wait on that to start releasing material. That is why we're starting with the early days of the band. This will include rare shows that nobody knows about, demos, and rehearsals. We even have Billy's demos from 1985, after he graduated high school. By doing this under the fan club system, you can buy whatever you want. If we put out a show an '88 show from Iowa, it might sound pretty raw and it might not appeal to everybody. The people that are interested in it can buy it if they want, and it would be an extremely limited edition release. We'll rate shows and put up information on the quality, so you can be sure that you aren't going to buy something you'll be unhappy with. I can assure you that whatever we put out will be the best quality that exists, and will be the definitive version. If we put out a show that already exists in bootleg form, ours will be better quality. If you already have a bootleg copy of a show or demo that we release, think of our version as an upgrade. I can't say an exact date on when we'll start to release stuff, but we're looking at the first releases to come out in fall of this year.

Корган сейчас активно препирается с фанами по поводу значимости и качества своего нынешнего творчества. Препирается, но тем не менее, я думаю, чувствует и понимает, что все далеко не отлично. И мне кажется, пока он не докажет фанам, а также самому себе, что он ещё на что-то способен, пока он по-настоящему (честно) не будет доволен откликом, которое его новое творчество находит у фанов, пока не закончится вся эта драма "old songs vs new songs", не видать нам никаких переизданий, бонусов, боксетов, метро 2000, чикаго сонгс и проч.

If I had to make a choice today, it would probably be something along the lines of outline the project, and see who might want to buy in with a guarantee that they are assured a limited edition pressing. We all know the songs will be bootlegged, there is no mystery in that anymore, but I feel that because of what these ideas are, in essence a real peek under the covers of how these albums came together, that there will be enough fans who would want to own a physical copy. Putting them together for digital consumption is easy, but probably not going to excite enough people. I know I get motivated when I think about a 20 album vinyl set of my demos from 1985-1994, even if only 500 fans wanted every one, because it means together we get to make something permanent that requires love, and a cover photo, and some liner notes, etc. In essence it is motivating to share more than just a digital file; to make art.
Our main focus in the short term however is to find the relevant songs to be part of the bonus disc on each release, and to get these together in time to get out before Christmas of this year. There are many obvious choices to choose from, for example 'Drown' from the Singles soundtrack and 'Starla', which was the B-side of the UK 'I am One' single for 'Gish' bonus disc. On the surface, if you already own those songs, you might say 'why do I need them again?' Which is a good question I myself ask as a fan. So for example, for 'Drown', we may release an alternate version with has a completely different take of the long end guitar solo, mixed by Butch Vig in 1992. With 'Starla', we've talked about a completely new Kerry Brown mix 2011 style, with the original mix still being available on the 'Pisces Iscariot' record. These of course are those more known titles, but we remain hopeful to find those hidden gems that have never been heard by anyone. For example, I came across a tape the other day where I had played live, right onto an 8 track recorder, 5 songs acoustic, 'Rocket' being one of them. This version I know has never been bootlegged out. But I also found on that same tape 2 unknown songs which are half-written, with me kind of faking lyrics as I often do when I'm writing a song. I never had any intention for anyone to ever hear these versions, and in their raw form are probably not release worthy, at least not commercially. But what I might do is 'finish' the songs now; record a final version after all these years with me on guitar and voice alone, and provide those half-baked versions on the SP facebook page for everyone to enjoy a lost moment in time. So lots of exciting choices as well to come.
Corgan Provides Details on Album Reissues, Archives
As promised in a tweet last night, Billy Corgan provided a status update on the both the progress of and ideas behind the Archive Project. While he gave a brief mention to the current work being done, which he described as taking ”any materials from 1985-1994 that are relevant to the Gish, Siamese Dream, or Pisces Iscariot albums and get them into a stable, 96k format,” Billy also spent quite a bit of time describing a new potential method for releasing work that isn’t worthy of mainstream commercial treatment.

звучит как всегда красиво, но посмотрим, сбудется ли. В любом случае, переиздания на cd куплю обязательно. Насчёт винила подумаю.
да выпустит, куда он денется. А потом нас ждут переиздания MCIS, Adore и Machina, это тоже радует. Machina правда и так записана очень круто, там звук улучшать не к чему, имхо.
Record Club launches with free demos of “Drown,” “Geek U.S.A.”; L.A. design firm hired to build “the new SmashingPumpkins.com”
The Smashing Pumpkins Record Club emerged from its cocoon today, busting out with a new SmashingPumpkins.com splash page by Los Angeles design firm Uprising Creative—and that firm says it is on the hook to the band for more than one fancy graphic:
We’re stoked to be working with Topspin and Smashing Pumpkins on both the new smashingpumpkins.com and the new Smashing Pumpkins Record Club (SPRC). SPRC is going to be amazing, with Billy releasing previously unreleased demos, videos, photos, and other content periodically for members-only.
Our first step is today’s launch of the initial SPRC splash page and the release of the “Drown” 8-track demo. In the coming months, we’ll be doing a ton of behind the scenes work getting SPRC and the new site built out.
In a new video embedded on the splash page, Pumpkins leader Billy Corgan discusses the demo recording of “Drown” that is given as a free download to anyone who proffers their email address.
Regarding the future of the Record Club, Corgan says, “There’ll be so much free stuff; I’m not even joking.”
Also on the splash page, free, and not even a joke is a “secret” download of a nearly instrumental 2-track demo of “Geek U.S.A.”
Topspin Media, the other SPRC partner referenced by Uprising, bills itself as “the most powerful direct-to-fan platform on the planet.” (And before you say “Topspin is just a shopping cart”, ask, does your shopping cart have this?) Topspin’s clients include George Strait, Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All, Toad the Wet Sprocket, and David Lynch.

I'm happy to report that the Oceania album is less than a week away from being fully completed. This has been a very long journey, arduous yet pleasant, and I'm very pleased with where we ended up on all fronts; musically, spiritually, personally. Making this record has been a real team effort, with not just the band putting in heavy contributions but also participation and advice from Kerry Brown, Kevin Dippold, Bjorn Thorsrud and many other people here that keep the old machines up and running. Some of these song ideas date back to those first demos from 2009 in California with Mark Tulin, but the bulk of this album was written in Sedona in the first few months of 2011. Sedona is a special place, particularly for self-reflection and healing, and is recommended for anyone who might be seeking a little bit more perspective on what matters most in life.
Rock and roll, despite my many protestations, is very important to me. Music has given me a wonderful opportunity in life, and I've tried to repay that debt in gratitude by working hard to honor what I see as a magical vocation. I'm blessed to be in this band right now with Nicole, Mike, and Jeff. When you hear the finished record you'll hear the love we put into this. Carrying on the legacy of The Smashing Pumpkins is not always an enviable task for all involved, but it is a grand, monstrous idea- a crazy 'why?' that I helped to foster and still battle with when I get lost. The current band members have helped me, through their patience and love of what The Smashing Pumpkins mean to them personally, and their friendship and loyalty to me, to find a deeper appreciation for what is still possibly under the old moniker. We are determined to have a future, or have nothing at all. As it should be.
Glad to see the launch of the Smashing Pumpkins Record Club (SPRC) finally come to fruition. It is a labor of love to try to organize all of these tapes, digging to find lost performances. There is mostly good news; for example we were finally able to locate the master mixes of Drown after months of seeking, being told repeatedly they could not be found. Thankfully, a person from the old label at EMI took it upon themselves to look one more time in their archives and found it, on a single DAT tape. 6 mixes of all, the 6th being an alternative ending to the song with a completely different guitar solo.
On the confusing side, it appears that the original tape that had a vocal demo version of both 'today' and 'tulips' might be lost forever. These versions are floating around, so it's frustrating to think either the tape is falsely labeled, lost, or misplaced. Thankfully we have other sources.
This is an exciting time for the world of SP: a new album, preparations for an American tour and a European tour, and the release this year of a newly mastered Gish and Siamese Dream from the original tapes with a disc of extras for each, as well as a dvd of live concert footage.
I think over the next 3 years there will be approximately 17-20 albums worth of music released and re-issued, and that is if you don't count additional side releases we want to do of say a board tape of the band from 1992.
Those types of items would be more limited edition offerings I'm guessing, which is why you want to be a member of the SPRC, because all members will be given an opportunity to say they want a limited edition piece before we decide the final number.
There is a lot more free music to come as well. We are happy to share stuff with you that provides little windows into the work process, so that like us you can catch those little moments of sunshine that added up to some pretty good music.
Lastly, I'm about 2/3rds of the way through my first draft of my spiritual memoir, 'God is Everywhere From Here to There'. I hope to finish the book by the spring of 2012, and it should come out by the end of next year. It is a lot more in depth than I would have originally guessed when I started, particularly about my musical life. Who knew their was so much drama to be rediscovered and uncovered?
