Crestfallen.com: I recently went over the locations where the Smashing Pumpkins have gone to in past tours and came across a number of places such as Russia, Poland, and Greece who have only had the Pumpkins once in the past. What has kept the Smashing Pumpkins from going back to such locations where they have only been once or twice?
Billy: I think your question is misapplied. Nothing *keeps us* from going anywhere. We can go anywhere we want, the question should be *will there be an audience waiting for us when we do get there?*. We have fans all over the world. But in some places not enough to create a situation where the time and energy is in the city to create a demand. Our one trip to Poland in the 90s ended with the promoter so furious that *only* 3,000 fans came, he and his staff abandoned us at the end of the show, refusing to have the arranged cars take us back to the hotel. We had to go out the back and hail a cab home. Only time that has ever happened to us. So we’ve never had a promoter offer from Poland since. Ultimately the fans can make it happen by writing their local promoters and insisting the band be booked.

Track times and audio clips for each track included on the deluxe editions of Gish and Siamese Dream, the two Smashing Pumpkins albums being reissued this month, are now available for examination, at least through the German retail site Amazon.de.
Among the unreleased material in the packages, the longest track is a new mix of “Starla,” which covers the first 11 minutes of the Gish bonus disc. The shortest cut is “U.S.S.R.,” a previously unheard song taking up 95 seconds on the second Siamese Dream disc.

In remarks posted today on Smashing Pumpkins friend blog Crestfallen.com, frontman Billy Corgan says that fans may not get to hear his band’s new album for another few months:
We are just now choosing new management, and once we do I anticipate by the end of November we’ll know what label is going to put [Oceania] out. So March is the realistic release window with the way that side works.

Corgan: Reissues provide “an insight into our process”
Billy Corgan recently sat down with music personality Matt Pinfield to discuss, among other topics, the upcoming reissues of Gish and Siamese Dream.
On the reissues themselves: “I want to create … an addendum to the album itself. And even where the quality level may not be great or the demo wasn’t meant to ever be heard by the public, it gives you an insight into our process going in, and … maybe even how we viewed ourselves coming out of the album.”
On James and D’Arcy’s involvement: “The relationships are really fractured. … I can’t work with them on a business level. I have no personal relationship with them. I think it’s unfortunate for them because they’ve cut themselves off from their own fans through the Pumpkins. And this should be a celebration of what we got right. … Siamese Dream now is considered a classic, and we’re all proud of that, I’m sure. The fact that we can’t celebrate that together is a shame.”
On the Siamese Dream recording sessions: “As the album wore on, and James and D’Arcy in particular realized they were not going to participate on the album as much as they’d hoped going in, it got very sour. Dark’s probably an appropriate world. There were many days where I worked 12-13 hour days … and they would never once come in to check on the progress of the recording. … They would just sit in the other room and just basically be unhappy. … The end of the band was sowed during the making of that record.”
On the advice he would give his younger self: “‘Calm the fuck down.’”
On the band’s legacy: “The thing I’m most proud of is we got the music for the most part fairly right. Somehow, in the midst of all this chaos, we did a fairly good job of the music. And the good thing is, that’s the thing that, pretty much, you get judged on. … At the end of the day, it’s pretty much gonna come down to, who’s got the better music. And I feel very confident about where we stand in our generation.”
On “Siva”: “Probably the first Smashing Pumpkins song where I felt, ‘Okay, I’m onto something.’”
On his public image: “I’ve been accused of being way too serious, and there’s some merit to that. But as I’ve often said to journalists, I’m in a band called the Smashing Pumpkins. I mean, I’m in a band with a joke name. So let’s start there: I’m not that serious.”
On his position as the leader of the Smashing Pumpkins: “Leader is too strong. [I'm the] ringmaster of an ever-evolving circus.”
“Siamese Dream” Deluxe Edition (EMI): 4 stars (out of 4)
Smashing Pumpkins’ debut, “Gish,” wasn’t the cool, everybody-has-to-hear-it album of 1991. It gave a passing glance to the emerging alternative-rock culture that worshiped Pacific Northwest “grunge,” but it was more in tune with unfashionable ‘70s influences.
The Chicago quartet looked mismatched from the start: Singer-guitarist Billy Corgan’s beads and frilly sleeves, drummer Jimmy Chamberlin’s muscle T-shirts and mullet, the porcelain iciness of bassist D’Arcy Wretzky, the shy inscrutability of guitarist James Iha. Their sound was a hodgepodge, too: metal roar, fey folkie drama, Gothic despair, arena bombast, progressive rock, psychedelia, a weird mix of hip and mainstream, the populist and the arcane.
“Gish” was a modest hit, but it was outsold and out-hyped later in the year by “Nevermind,” the second album from Seattle’s Nirvana. Kurt Cobain delivered the songs, pithier and punkier and more readily accessible than Corgan’s. But the Pumpkins’ sound had its own allure. And it laid the groundwork for the quartet’s big breakthrough two years later, “Siamese Dream,” one of the era’s cornerstones.
Now, both “Gish” and “Siamese Dream” are getting the deluxe reissue treatment, with tricked-out packages stuffed with outtakes, concert videos, liner notes and extra artwork. The remastered albums still sound potent – a testament to the rigorous attention to detail that Corgan and producer Butch Vig brought to the original sessions. And the bonus material testifies to Corgan’s evolution as a songwriter. He was prolific, driven and a little nuts – suicidal, to hear him tell it. He also was almost embarrassingly transparent; he poured his obsessions into those two albums, providing decades of fodder for audiophiles and psycho-analysts alike.
“Gish” remains among the more sensual hard-rock albums of the decade. In contrast to the testosterone pouring from contemporaries such as Soundgarden, Pearl Jam and Nine Inch Nails, Corgan had the yin and the yang in his limited voice, toggling between pinched howl and fragile, child-like breathiness. His voice rides the curve of the guitars, the arrangements swerving rather than stomping in typical hard-rock fashion, yielding surprises with each turn. For all its sensitivity to flow, the group could crush your skull when you least expected it, going from near-silence to a thunderclap. The ebb-and-surge dynamics in a track such as “Siva” still impress, as if Corgan were trying to compress a side-long suite by his beloved Rush into four minutes. “Tell me, tell me what you’re after/I just want to get there faster,” he sings.
He’d get there fast enough with “Siamese Dream,” with its more focused, sturdily constructed songs and even more fastidious production. Corgan once again dominated the sessions, playing all the instruments save for Chamberlin’s monster drums. And yet Iha contributed heavily to two of the album’s best songs, “Mayonnaise” and “Soma” (a beautiful instrumental version is among the best of the bonus tracks).
The outtakes show the work in progress. A rehearsal demo of “Today” hums along like a perfectly agreeable hard-rock track that probably would’ve been played on emerging alternative-rock stations and then forgotten. But Corgan later came up with an intro guitar part that gave the song its chiming fragility, a sense that its beauty and optimism were just a cover-up. “Today is the greatest day I’ve ever known” becomes “Today is the greatest day I’ve never known.”
More than any moment, “Today” is the pivot point of the Pumpkins’ career, a breakthrough song for a band that had been all about sound. “Siamese Dream” was loaded with melodies, from “Luna” (both in its gossamer studio version and its even more haunting “apartment demo”) to the scorched overdrive of “Cherub Rock,” Corgan’s raised middle finger to the independent-rock scene that never embraced him. The feeling was mutual. Corgan wrote his share of clunky lyrics (“Life’s a bummer when you’re a hummer”) but they spoke with a directness that Cobain’s more poetically inclined words sometimes lacked. Corgan was a stoop-shouldered suburban misfit from a splintered household, much like many in his audience, and “Siamese Dream” became a soundtrack for a significant portion of his generation.
It did so by tempering some of the first album’s extremes; sticky melodies and pretty production can make almost anything radio-friendly, even a desperately sad song like “Today.” Live, there were no such restraints, as illustrated by a DVD from an August 1993 concert at Metro. Before plunging into the alternately pummeling and self-indulgent closer, “Silverfuck” , Corgan advises the audience: “After this, you won’t want to hear no more. We will be so bombastic, you’ll never want to hear music again.”
As the song crashes, Corgan screams, “Liar! Liar!” at the audience, then mocks the encore-hungry fans and himself by leading a half-hearted chant of Gary Glitter’s “Rock and Roll” before exiting.
That confrontational stance served Corgan’s music, if not his public image. Corgan didn’t want to be liked. He wanted to be heard.

I remember reading a desert-island-albums list by Billy Corgan in 1993 that was so scarily like my own musical arc-- pop/prog/metal nerd discovers goth, Jane's Addiction, and My Bloody Valentine -- that I couldn't have been more designed for Smashing Pumpkins hyperfandom if I tried. Like no one before him, Corgan made those influences work. As Canadian writer Jennifer Nine once put it in Melody Maker, you got a sense that he was the kind of guy who worked out every last transcription from Guitar Player in the 1980s and then actually did something with it. It helped that the rest of the band had their own skills, especially in the case of Jimmy Chamberlin, a jazz/hard-rock drum freak let loose on alt-rock radio.
Alt-rock radio, at its height of commercial trendsetting, enabled the Pumpkins to not merely survive but thrive. There, Corgan could have his cake and eat it too, daring people to get annoyed at his starlust and reacting in kind while further building up his ambitions. He got his band signed to a major label and used the fig leaf of a corporate indie release for Gish, scored a prime spot on the Seattle-focused Singles soundtrack with "Drown", essentially went "Haters gonna hate" with Siamese Dream's first single "Cherub Rock", and got petulant when any other acts or writers accused him of protesting too much. And not just Pavement, either: "You hurt me deeply in my heart," he once infamously pouted to Kim Thayil before a 1994 Australian concert, following which the Pumpkins went on "to play the best set anybody has ever heard them play."
All of which goes some distance toward explaining why both reissues of Gish and Siamese Dream-- appropriately loaded with rarities, DVD bonuses, fancy packaging, and often-impressionistic song-for-song liner notes by Corgan-- remain remarkable thoughout unequal listens.
Even in 1991, Gish felt like something that started off well with songs like "Siva" and "Rhinoceros" but meandered a bit toward the end. Corgan's voice never sounded as lost in his music as it does here, and most of the emphasis is on the band's collective performance: Chamberlin's powerful, fluid drumming, Darcy Wretzky's strong basslines, and that thick, chunky glaze of guitars.
The rarities disc contains a few never-before-heard numbers, a few that have long circulated among fanatics (the Corgan-sung version of "Daydream" is a keeper), and a handful of remixed selections (including their best full-on rock epic, "Starla") that first surfaced on a full-length release via the odds-and-ends release Pisces Iscariot. These tracks do a better job of showcasing the band's various sonic sides than Gish itself. The DVD, a multi-camera cut from a live show at the Metro in Chicago almost a year prior to Gish's release, shows that the band already had their exact arrangements pretty well down, as well as a worshipping fanbase. The highlights include Corgan and James Iha's heavily long hair, curious fashion choices all around, and set-closing covers of Steppenwolf and Blue Öyster Cult; the video quality is pretty good and the sound mix, if heavily favoring the vocals, beats out most bootlegs of the time.
In contrast to Gish's steady flow, Siamese Dream crashes out of the gate. "Cherub Rock" remains an absolutely stellar opener with a sense of pure sonic melodrama, thanks to Chamberlin's circus-act drum introduction, a tight clip of guitars quickly matched by equally nimble bass, a volcanic blast of a guitar lead, and then a shift to a woozy, still-building sprawl. And all this before the first verse even starts. Throw in everything that followed-- the overt MBV worship of "Hummer", the country-rock-tinged wanderlust of "Mayonaise", "Soma"'s update of Prince's "The Beautiful Ones" for a new decade, and inevitably the MTV/radio hits "Today", "Disarm", and "Rocket"-- and no matter your take on its mastermind or his divisive whining/sighing vocals, it's an embarrassment of musical riches.
There's also the fact that the album's studio personnel was as essentially stripped down as the White Stripes; Corgan, frantically taking charge in the midst of band dysfunction, recorded nearly everything himself aside from the drums, and he'd probably have handled those too if he could. Siamese Dream's songs don't blend into each other, but some transitions exist; each stands out in a brilliant sequence, forming perhaps the best concept album they ever made.
One of the main things people complained about was exactly what made the band click even further. If Corgan's early lyrics were classic self-centered/self-righteous/self-pitying teenagerdom run amock, he always had an ear for hooks, metaphors, and deft summaries (thus, on "Mayonaise": "Fool enough to almost be it/ Cool enough to not quite see it"). It's catnip for when you have it bad, no matter how minuscule your problems might really be, and any number of later bands (My Chemical Romance most obviously, and the Pains of Being Pure at Heart most recently) took plenty of notice.
As for the many rarities, more Pisces Iscariot remixes and other demos and alternate versions take a bow, including a six-minute version of "Siamese Dream" itself (the original B-side version was a shorter and murkier take that ran under three minutes) and twin instrumentals "U.S.A." and "U.S.S.R.".
The DVD is the most worthwhile addition of either reissue; taken from another Metro show a couple of weeks after Siamese Dream's release, it vividly illustrates how far the band had come in the three years since Gish: It showcases their more varied sound, Corgan's keener sense for playing to the crowd (there are flashes of his and Iha's underrated sense of humor), a killer setlist drawing on both albums (plus "Starla" and "Drown"), and brilliant sound and performances throughout. If Corgan's voice shows strain at many points, the crowd shots are especially entertaining, with endless moshpits and crowdsurfers during most of the loud points and plenty of the slow ones.
The full story of the band's existence has plenty of ups and downs to go through, and there are more reissues to come to spell this out, even as the current version of the band moves along according to Corgan's own cryptic impulses. Yet these two releases still resonate, as both a nostalgia fix underscoring how it was so easy to fall for Smashing Pumpkins in the first place, and as the best introductions to their music any newcomer could want.

Corgan sifts through the ‘Mellon Collie’ and ‘Adore’ attics
Since wrapping the Smashing Pumpkins’ European tour on December 10, Billy Corgan has been back in the United States and has apparently started working on sorting through material for the reissues of Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness and Adore.
To recap a bit about the status and schedule of the reissue project: The Pumpkins reissued their first two albums, Gish and Siamese Dream, on November 29, and are scheduled to release several more reissues in 2012. In an October interview with the Detroit News, Corgan stated that the reissue of b-sides album Pisces Iscariot was due out on Record Store Day 2012 – that is, April 21, 2012. In a tweet on December 1, Corgan appears to have reinforced the April release date and suggested that around the same time, the band would release, via the Smashing Pumpkins Record Club, all of their pre-Gish demos and many hours of early live shows and rehearsals. As far as the rest of 2012 goes, the Pumpkins’ August press release stated that reissues of Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, The Aeroplane Flies High, and Adore were all scheduled for 2012, probably late in the year.
Corgan’s recent comments give the appearance that he is sorting through unreleased tracks from the Mellon Collie and Adore eras, including full length versions of the “Pastichio Medley” clips “Knuckles” and “Zoom,” an alternate version of “Pastichio Medley” itself, and this guy’s remix of “Ava Adore.”
Corgan told attendees of a fan meetup preceding the Pumpkins’ Boston show on October 21 that he is contractually obligated to reissue the band’s back catalog with EMI by the end of 2013.

The discussion revisits familiar thoughts from Corgan regarding Courtney Love, Resistance Pro, and the Tarot, but he does offer fresh—or at least newly extreme—commentary on his relationships with former bandmates Jimmy Chamberlin, James Iha, and D’Arcy Wretzky. Following are two excerpts.
Billy Corgan:
Success held that band together longer than it should have been held together. It was dysfunctional. There were a lot of years there where I regretted the way it all went down, and now I think it was meant to die when it died how it died. We stole from the Promethean fire to fuel whatever our weird psychic death trip was and then we paid for it. Or got too close to the sun and crashed. It was just meant to be that way. And you can draw parallels from that with Jimmy’s situation [when he left the band in 2009] because maybe that was just a continuance of something that hadn’t been resolved back then.
NME/Emily Mackay: He said in his statement on leaving that he “couldn’t just cash the cheque”…
Corgan: See now, here is a perfect opportunity to bury Jimmy as a fucking liar. But I won’t. That’s a lie. That statement’s just a flat-out lie.
NME: Was it that you wanted to take the band in a commercial direction, and he didn’t?
Corgan: Ha ha! No, it’s the exact opposite. I wish I could explain it, but I don’t trust the world to understand the complexity of it. I think it’s telling that the first thing Jimmy did when he left the band was make a statement about money because that had a lot to do with it. But if you look at what I’ve done since he left, where have I made money?
Later:
NME: Do you still feel any rancour towards the other band members about the way it ended?
Corgan: Uhhh… I’m OK with Jimmy. We don’t have a relationship at the moment, but I mean, I have no ill will. I want to see him do well. James Iha I think is just a piece of shit. I think he’s one of the worst human beings I’ve ever met in my life. And D’Arcy, she’s sort of, in her own way, sort of an innocent.
NME: Those photos that were released when she was arrested for missing a court date last year suggested she wasn’t really in a good place.
Corgan: Yeah, it’s terrible. But she’s not a bad person. And I don’t hold any ill will towards her, even though I’ve had to deal with fucking lawsuits and stuff like that. If there’s any culprit in this it’s Iha. But, y’know, he was there at the right time of my life, we did do good things together, I think he is a good musician when he gives a fuck, which most of the time he doesn’t. And that’s about it.
The same issue of NME carries a review of the Pumpkins’ new album Oceania; Mackay’s declaration that it is “the strongest Smashing Pumpkins album in years” notwithstanding, the review gives Oceania six of a possible ten points.

Напомним, что перед началом работы над «Oceania» Корган призывал к отрицанию идеи альбомов и начал издавать 44-песенный цикл, навеянный сюжетами карт Таро под названием «Teargarden By Kaleidyscope». Когда ему задают вопрос относительно стандартного объема «Oceania», Билли обычно находчиво отвечает, что его новая пластинка - это как бы «альбом в альбоме».

Smashing Pumpkins may work on new studio material in August
Bill Palmer of Beatweek Magazine has published a wide-ranging new interview with Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan. In the interview, Corgan discusses the dynamics of the current Smashing Pumpkins lineup, their plans for future recordings, and how the Pumpkins’ reissue project has influenced their live performances, among other topics. Below are three excerpted quotations.
In which Corgan evaluates his albums, specifically Zeitgeist:
I think in that way I’ve never made a bad album. I would say the album that was the least fulfilling of its potential was Zeitgeist…I think every other album was in the range of its potential as an A or a B. I wouldn’t necessarily rate Zeitgeist as a C, it just didn’t hit its potential and it kind of got lost somewhere along the way in the process. Some of the best songs are in the demos that didn’t get recorded and that kind of shit. I think it’s up there, but I also think it has to do with familiarity. There’s a certain ring here that people are comfortable with, and I’m okay with it or obviously I wouldn’t have put it out. But I think TheFutureEmbrace was a great album, and it was completely overlooked, my solo album. Over time now, over the last seven years, now people are starting to really get into it because it’s got a bit of a visionary aspect to it. So again, what was the point of the album? The mainstream always assumes that every album you’re throwing yourself out there with your bust, and I’m not that type of artist. I pick my spot and I go for that spot, and I rate it on whether or not I hit my spot.
Of the first Teargarden by Kaleidyscope songs, Corgan says that “I think there were ten official Teargarden releases. In those ten there was at least two or three really good songs.”
On the future of Teargarden, Corgan had this to say:
I’m kind of mulling that around. There’s a lot of demos that are really fairly quality at least in terms of the songs. They’re just interesting, dusky sketches. The problem with the world we live in now is everything is judged so fast so hard and is given too much power, for lack of a better word. Three months from now I would love to just reach in and toss out a couple of those demos from 2009 so people could hear some different songs, maybe some things that helped lead to Oceania. But then invariably some asshole with a blog is going to write about the new Smashing Pumpkins song and how it sucks. I’m mature enough now that I don’t really care, but at this point we’re in a positive place and maybe we just need to play a positive game. Maybe we just need to be like everybody else and shine it up real nice and bright before we put it out. We definitely want to do another album. We’re already talking about starting to do some demos in August. It’s tough. I do want to put out some of this stuff that I’m sitting on. I do want to finish the project as I sort of originally sketched out. But right now we’re riding a wave and I’m not really sure where that wave takes us.
“The thing I learned most from [William] Burroughs is he was willing to put words together that don’t belong together. In that, he created a form of violence. It’s like a messy landscape by making uncomfortable word choices.”

It's been a long road to Oceania, the seventh LP (eighth, if you count the first free internet release by a major artist, 2000's Machina II/The Friends & Enemies of Modern Music) by the Smashing Pumpkins.
After reviving the alternative rock juggernaut for 2007's Zeitgeist with only drum deity Jimmy Chamberlin remaining from the classic line-up, mastermind Billy Corgan was met with a lot of scepticism for heading the only group among his '90s contemporaries to reform with the express purpose of creating new music. "If we don't lead with new music, we don't lead with anything," Corgan says. "We've had to go out of our way, and in many ways have suffered to paint that picture. Then you deal with this blog crowd that think you haven't written a good song since 1995." Corgan laments.
"That's a strange position to be in, but I think we've persevered and Oceania is the beneficiary of our collective will to continue to push forward no matter what." With a revamped group of tremendous players comprising a new incarnation of the Pumpkins since the launch of the wildly ambitious 44-song Teargarden by Kaleidyscope (of which Oceania is a part), Corgan has reached another period of peak song creation within the framework of epic, progressive space-rock, or what used to be simply referred to as "alternative music."

Here are some notes from the interview:
-Sketching out forms for next album. Haven’t gotten to musical end, plenty of ideas lying around though.
-Trying to figure out what kind of record to make.
-Blamed ‘the Twitter wave’ for the poor response to Teargarden songs, “If people get a negative inclination, people can’t shake out of that first perception.” Also said, “With social media things, those negative impressions can add up pretty quickly.”
-‘Porcelina of the Vast Oceans’ was inspired by Neil Young’s Cortez the Killer. Regarding the lyrics Billy said, “I scribbled them out before the show, and just ended up keeping them.”
-was very humble when talking about fans. Talked about posting thankful things on Twitter for fans and that whenever he does it it’s genuine, unlike other phony alternative rockers. Joked that he complains a lot but has his moments of clarity where he is thankful for all of success and his fans. Says when fans come up to him he is so flattered all he can muster out sometimes is a thank you.

In an interview published earlier this month in Manila’s Philippine Star newspaper, Smashing Pumpkins leader Billy Corgan somewhat confusingly lumped Soundgarden together with Pavement among bands of his generation that he said reunited not to forge a new future in music but merely for “one more round at the till.” This morning, alert and sympathetic deejay Josh Goodman of Denver’s KTCL-FM had Corgan on the phone and, as part of their conversation, he prompted Corgan to expand on those comments related to Soundgarden. Goodman’s full interview with Corgan can be heard online. Below, we of Hipsters United offer a partial transcript of the interview that corrects and extends a partial transcript posted earlier today by the diehards at New Jersey-based blog Grunge Report. Our transcript picks up just past the 4-minute mark in the online audio file, which of course is superior for conveying tone and so forth.
Josh Goodman: I love reading your interviews, and I interviewed you back when you played for Big Gig here in 2010, and I love that you don’t censor what’s on your mind, and…
Billy Corgan: [laughs] Maybe I should, though.
Goodman: No, you shouldn’t, man, it’s good, I think people need to hear it. But, you know, along those lines of what you were saying, about bands going out and playing sort of their rehashed greatest-hits stuff, you did specifically call out Soundgarden in that vein, saying: Hey, man, they’re just going out to make money, and let’s just call it what it is. I’m curious, did you ever, have you heard from the guys in Soundgarden? I know you’re a fan of the band. Did you hear from Chris Cornell or anything? Did they have anything to say to you directly, or not really?
Corgan: Well, there’s a little bit of a backstory there. Chris Cornell was somebody I considered a friend, and would never have said a harsh word about. When the band came back in 2007, he was quoted in an interview saying basically he didn’t consider our reunion, in quotations, to be legitimate. I kind of have an elephant’s memory when it comes to somebody punching me in the face. Cornell’s one of those people who is extremely talented, I was a fan from literally their 2nd EP, met him in 1991 and still believe in what was great about the band. But when we’re sitting there having conversations about who is doing what, I am no longer going to shield somebody. If they want to punch me in the face I’m happy to punch them back in the face. Respect the man’s talent. People gloss over the Timbaland album [laughs], you know what I mean? My point is look, I don’t have any specific bone to pick, although I just obviously made a case for one. My point is, don’t lump us in with people who are sort of just doing the reunion lap. Now, of course fans are lighting up my Twitter saying, “Do you realize Soundgarden is doing a new album?” OK, well, if they are, great, that’s what they should be doing. Great musicians, they should make new music, and hopefully they’ll make great albums, because we need artists to make great albums and great music in this day and age of the robots and the posers and the fauxhawk bands. Does it make sense? Do I sound like a fan? Because I am a fan.
Goodman: You expect more from them. You want them to raise the bar, is what you’re saying. That’s what you’re trying to do.
Corgan: I want all of my generation to raise the bar.
Goodman: Which I see.
Corgan: And I don’t appreciate when someone from my generation, who I once considered a friend, decides to piss on my little spot in the corner, for whatever reason, right around the same time he’s making the Timbaland album, you know what I mean? That’s where it gets kind of dicey for me, so that’s sort of the real backstory of where that came from.
Goodman: Well, on the flipside, there is a band that you have shown admiration for, that I agree—Radiohead is one of those bands that’s not resting on their laurels and playing their greatest hits, and obviously they’ve got a great foundation, but, every album they seem to evolve and challenge their audience and they remain hugely, hugely popular.
Corgan: Yeah.
Goodman: Maybe they’re an exception to the rule? I mean, you said you’re a fan of Radiohead and what they’re doing, I guess?
Corgan: Yeah, I mean, look. The difficulty with a band like Radiohead is that they don’t fall into the American model of generating singles per se. So you have a lot of American radio stations that won’t play Radiohead. And I’ve actually chastised American radio for not playing Radiohead, because I think they’re doing themselves a disservice—because they could use those Radiohead fans coming into the station. Alternative radio for the most part, somewhere along the way in the last ten years, took a left at singles. You know what I mean? And stopped supporting, let’s say, call it core alternative bands. There are two or three or four songs on the new Smashing Pumpkins album that should get played on the radio, could get played on the radio. But, against a bunch of robot bands, maybe they don’t sound as attractive, because they don’t sound like McDonald’s commercials, you know what I mean? So some stations play our songs and some stations don’t. The stations that don’t play our songs tend to play a lot of fauxhawk robot music. So, how that’s alternative, I don’t understand, but that’s what they call it.

new interview with Smashing Pumpkins Billy Corgan about his new Madame Zuzu’s Tea House
“The North Shore gets a bad rap,” Corgan insisted this week. “Someone wrote something typically stupid on Twitter the other day, saying it’s all rich white people. That does these communities a disservice. I meet people of all walks and races here. To me, this is a vibrant community.”
It’s not a mere celebrity vanity project. His name’s not on it, but Corgan plans to be very involved and present — along with partner Sharon Mackin-Norberg, owner of the Ravinia Wine Shop directly across the street. The shop isn’t selling a bunch of extra merchandise — no Smashing Pumpkins mugs. Corgan himself selects the teas supplied from around the world.
“I’ve never had coffee. I’ve always hated the smell,” Corgan said. “It was always tea. I was a pretty typical kid, though. I grew up drinking Lipton. I didn’t know there was other tea to drink.”
Corgan inaugurates Madame ZuZu’s with three live sets

Today, for the opening of his tea house in Highland Park, IL, Billy Corgan treated fans to free tea and three live performances. Corgan played around 1PM, again at 4PM, and for a third and final time at 7PM.
During the first set, Corgan was joined by Greg Bates, who contributed to acoustic guitar to a rousing group singing of “Today.” Bates recorded songs with Corgan as Coat of Eyes, a short-lived band active before Corgan departed for Florida in 1985 to form The Marked, his better-known pre-Pumpkins band.
The second set featured live rarity “Jupiter’s Lament” and “The Rite of Spring,” a track Corgan debuted in July.
I’m still looking for additional information on the third set, but Corgan apparently switched to Madame ZuZu’s rare Bosendorfer piano and played some more tunes.
If you haven’t heard, Billy Corgan has gone into the tea business. Yesterday, the Smashing Pumpkins frontman opened his very own teahouse in his hometown of Highland Park, IL. Inspired by the Chinoise teahouses found in Paris during the 1930s, Corgan designed Madame ZuZu’s to serve “as a social hub for the community, blending tea drinkers with the arts.”
Rock It Out! Blog was there for the grand opening, and had a chance to speak to Corgan about his latest venture. We also discussed if the teahouse would have an impact on his music career, what the future holds for the Pumpkins, and if the band planned to hit the music festival circuit in support of their newest album, Oceania.

In a phone interview with Tulsa World Billy Corgan told the paper that the Tulsa audience will get the massive, arena-sized production, without the 25 foot wide orb. Corgan tells them “We’ll play ‘Oceania’ and move straight into another set of our hits,”
Billy also touched on how he isn’t the same person as he was in 1995:
“People have come up to me after shows and talked to me like they were shocked I’m not exactly the same man I was in 1995, like I could look that guy up in the phone book and tell him to come to the next show,” he said.
“Nostalgia acts are really big right now – they’re huge – but for me to continue, to be happy, I have to also make music. I’m not an entertainer. I’m a musician – that’s my trade.”

It’s almost as if you broke up with somebody and there was somebody else and you almost kinda hope that it goes horribly so they’d either have to admit that they were happier with you or they have to come back to you. Corgan attended one of Layne Staley’s final shows with Alice In Chains in June 1996 at Tiger Stadium in Detroit, it was the only time he ever saw the band live with Staley. Billy performed with AIC in 2006 and has always been friendly with the band. AIC seem to be friendly with everybody, from the Pumpkins and Stone Temple Pilots to the Seattle bands.

Also I have two unreleased acoustic records, plus an unreleased acoustic soundtrack — three albums worth of acoustic albums from the mid-2000s that are totally unreleased. Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell has shot back at Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan in a new interview with ABC News Radio. A few months ago, Corgan said Soundgarden’s reunion was a cash grab.
Cornell told ABC News Radio the following, “When Billy Corgan was completely broke, I got him a movie deal with [director] Cameron Crowe where he made $40,000. He was very happy about that, and he was specifically happy about the $40,000. So next time you see him, tell him owes me my $40,000 back.”

"It's really the end of an era," Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan told Rolling Stone in 1995, shortly after the band released its double-disc, era-defining epic Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. It would be the last album the original Pumpkins lineup – Corgan, guitarist James Iha, bassist D'arcy Wretzky and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin – made as a collective unit, rendering their leader's words even more prophetic.
Nearly two decades after Mellon Collie's release, the Pumpkins are releasing a deluxe re-mastered edition of the LP on December 3rd – complete with 64 bonus tracks and a live DVD – as part of a massive reissue project encompassing all of the band's albums and B-sides from 1991-2000. "In many ways it's beautiful that we were able to make something so grand as kind of a final statement of solvency of that group together," says Corgan. "But that was pretty much it. That was as good as it was going to get for the four of those people together."
- When was the last time you listened to Mellon Collie all the way through?
- Fairly recently. Because I had to approve the mastering. I think when I listen to old records, it puts me back in the atmosphere of what it felt like to make the record and who was there and what the room looked like. It's more a sensory memory. If I go deeper than that I start to remember the funny stories. When we were recording we had a rehearsal space we called Pumpkinland. [Album co-producer] Flood wanted to record Mellon Collie in there, which really surprised us. He liked the way we played in there. He thought we would be more comfortable. We're working in there and I think [co-producer] Alan Moulder and I were in the other room, and all of a sudden one of the pipes burst. And suddenly, this massive amount of water is coming out of the floor and was flooding the entire floor. We were trying to throw all the equipment in a corner where it hadn't flooded. We're all laughing 'cause it's so absurd. But meanwhile there's gallons of water coming out of this pipe and you don't know when it's going to stop. You remember these funny little memories when you listen.

Crestfallen.com reports that in a new interview with 93XRT, Billy Corgan said The Smashing Pumpkins are considering recording two albums. One that would be recorded perfect and another that would be more rough.
He also said that the Pumpkins are considering performing a 25th anniversary show this year in Chicago, maybe at the Metro.
BILLY CORGAN DENIES THAT HE IS A CONTROL FREAK, JEFF SCHROEDER SAYS CREATING NEW SMASHING PUMPKINS SONGS IS COLLABORATIVE
In a new interview with Guitar Center magazine, Smashing Pumpkins members Billy Corgan and Jeff Schroeder discuss the band’s current recording/writing process:
Corgan said, “There was this constant critique that hung in the air from 2007 to 2010, which was, ‘Billy’s lost his mind. Billy won’t let other people play in the sandbox. He’s a control freak.’ And then when Oceania came out, it all stopped- because they heard these three people on the record.”
Schroeder added, “I think people have the wrong impression of how the band works. They think that we go in, and [Corgan] goes, ‘Play this, play this, play this.’ We spend hours and hours just exploring and playing and looking for excitement. It’s a total dialog.”

BILLY CORGAN HINTS THAT THE SMASHING PUMPKINS WILL STOP TOURING
At last night’s Smashing Pumpkins show at the Paradiso in Amsterdam, Billy Corgan said that it would be the last time the Pumpkins would be playing the venue. He then sarcastically said, “But as they say in America, I’m getting a little long in the tooth, that’s how old. I know you love the world old. [I'm] 46 years old. I’m going start doing a lot of gardening. You know I’m joking but I’m not.”

WILLIAM CORGAN: ‘I SHOULD HAVE QUIT SMASHING PUMPKINS WHEN CHAMBERLIN WAS FIRED’
William Billy Corgan said in a new interview with Uncut that he should have quit The Smashing Pumpkins when Jimmy Chamberlin was fired in 1996 due to drug abuse.
“Did Jimmy being sacked cripple the band?” says Corgan. “Oh, absolutely. I should’ve quit right then. Instead, I doubled-down on a bad situation, and it got worse. The band went into a Cold War vibe. People stopped talking. And with walking away from rock stylistically, I was burning my bridges.”
Chamberlin rejoined the band in 1999 and remained until the 2000 split. Corgan and Chamberlin revived the Pumpkins in 2006 but Chamberlin was fired again in 2009 do to disagreements over the future of the band.

Smashing Pumpkins frontman William Corgan hinted at a hiatus for the band in a new interview with Crestfallen. Corgan did say though that there will be plenty of Smashing Pumpkins music in the future. Below are some quotes from Corgan regarding the state of the band:
“I don’t really know what makes sense any more. I think you have to come to a place where you say, if you continue you continue with a particular vision, not keep rolling with the tide. Because the tide as it is I don’t think it’s that great. I’m not saying that the audience isn’t great, or that the band isn’t great. Something about it all feels a little too nicey nice. I’m not in a rock and roll band to be nicey nice, it’s just not my thing.”
“I think I’ve kind of backed into a corner and I don’t think there’s an obvious next step out. Stopping might be part of that, or going back to a very radical musically intensive position might be a part of that.”
“Maybe the obvious next step is to do nothing.”
“There’s no doubt in my mind that there is still plenty of Smashing Pumpkins music to be made. No matter what anybody thinks, because I believe, as the architect off what worked, pick your era, I believe I can make it work with any combination of anybody if I really want to. Maybe that sounds insane, but that’s the way I look at it.”
Corgan also discussed veteran bands from the 90′s who don’t have the same passion they used to, and seeing unenthusiastic musicians at festivals, “I’m part of the problem, and I don’t know if I want to continue to be part of the problem.” He said there is a malaise in his business, and nobody is high fiving each other about playing songs that are older than their kids.

In Part 4 of Crestfallen owner Jonathan Monte’s new interview with Smashing Pumpkins frontman William Corgan, Corgan continued to discuss his desire to put the Smashing Pumpkins on hiatus and his problems with his career.
On the state of his career: “The one thing that you know, and I know, is that excellence at the highest level trumps every argument, which is why a filmmaker who is on the dust heap if he makes the brilliant film, or if she makes the brilliant film, suddenly they can have a comeback. Robert Downey Jr., the top to the bottom to the top. So anything is possible with excellence, in his case, I’m lucky enough to know him barely, he’s a fantastic actor, no doubt about it. The guy’s a great actor and he deserves to be a big movie star and I’m happy that he’s back where he belongs, because that’s where he belongs. Maybe that’s it, maybe there’s only room for me in that dust heap when I’m at my best best best best. Maybe that’s what I’m trying to say. Maybe the days of hoping the audience is willing to let me be less than robotically perfect or, do you want to follow me down B-side lane, young Jonathan. Do you understand? Maybe all those days are over, and there’s only one thing left to do.”
He later said, “I’m not going to continue on this [current] path, but I think we’re on a path where if we kind of were willing to kind of slog our way through the next 4 or 5 years, we could kind of come out the other end. But I don’t see doing that.” On Smashing Pumpkins’ 2007-2013 resurrection: “If 50 songs were released and 10 were excellent and 40 were shit, well at least you got 10 more excellent songs. It wouldn’t have existed [without bringing the band back].”
