Слово «контроль» не сразу возникает в голове, когда ты начинаешь слушать первый диск Smashing Pumpkins, который реально внушает первобытный трепет. Для Билли Коргана, 24-летнего фронтмена-гитариста из Чикаго, следование собственным курсом настолько важно, что его фанатизм уже отпугнул несколько мэйджоров. Именно поэтому группу и подписал инди-лейбл Caroline Records — фактически в обмен на полную свободу творчества.
Когда «Gish» только появился, многие сразу поняли, что хаотичное строение пластинки и каждого трека в отдельности были тщательно просчитаны.
«Главное, что мы не должны были делать — это понижать градус, — говорит Корган. — Мы не могли оказаться в том положении, когда бы почувствовали себя бессильными». В результате хаотичная по форме пластинка кажется дико собранной и почти идеально сконструированной. Группа, в которую также входят гитарист Джеймс Айха, басистка Д'Арси и барабанщик Джимми Чемберлен, идеально чувствует себя и в фидбековой гитарной буре, и в панковской простоте а la The Stooges, и в космических хендриксовских блюзах.
Полный контроль за происходящим в студии придал пластинке основательность и вес. «Студия — это большое зеркало, — говорит Корган. — Ты видишь каждую гримасу у себя на лице. Это как заглянуть внутрь себя. Иногда, когда я слушаю нашу первую пластинку, я просто не могу сдержаться от слез». Впрочем, личные драмы Коргана работают и в контексте остальных слушателей.
«Нужно обязательно было поверить, что мы содрали с себя всю одежду без исключения, — говорит Билли. — Этот альбом похож на то, как если бы кто-то ворвался к вам в дом. И я чувствую себя менеджером, который позволяет людям туда врываться. Только что я им двери не открываю». «Gish» прорубил проход в какую-то альтернативную Вселенную, которая, видимо, вскоре будет заполнена новым материалом — уже изданном на мэйджоре, где точно выйдет и вторая пластинка. В следующий раз Корган может позволить себе и послушать чьи-то советы. «Сейчас мы к этому готовы, — говорит он о всеобщем внимании к коллективу. — Ты имеешь то, что ты видишь. И мы уже прошли тот период, когда мы были бриллиантом в сточной канаве. Я имею ввиду настоящее время».

BILLY CORGAN HINTS THAT THE SMASHING PUMPKINS WILL STOP TOURING
At last night’s Smashing Pumpkins show at the Paradiso in Amsterdam, Billy Corgan said that it would be the last time the Pumpkins would be playing the venue. He then sarcastically said, “But as they say in America, I’m getting a little long in the tooth, that’s how old. I know you love the world old. [I'm] 46 years old. I’m going start doing a lot of gardening. You know I’m joking but I’m not.”

Host: When did that change?
William Corgan: I’ve been morphing for awhile, I’m going to go William now.

Host: Do you feel more grown up?
William Corgan: No, just Billy gets uncomfortable at some point. Like wrinkles and Billy, it just doesn’t work.
WILLIAM CORGAN: ‘I SHOULD HAVE QUIT SMASHING PUMPKINS WHEN CHAMBERLIN WAS FIRED’
William Billy Corgan said in a new interview with Uncut that he should have quit The Smashing Pumpkins when Jimmy Chamberlin was fired in 1996 due to drug abuse.
“Did Jimmy being sacked cripple the band?” says Corgan. “Oh, absolutely. I should’ve quit right then. Instead, I doubled-down on a bad situation, and it got worse. The band went into a Cold War vibe. People stopped talking. And with walking away from rock stylistically, I was burning my bridges.”
Chamberlin rejoined the band in 1999 and remained until the 2000 split. Corgan and Chamberlin revived the Pumpkins in 2006 but Chamberlin was fired again in 2009 do to disagreements over the future of the band.

Smashing Pumpkins frontman William Corgan hinted at a hiatus for the band in a new interview with Crestfallen. Corgan did say though that there will be plenty of Smashing Pumpkins music in the future. Below are some quotes from Corgan regarding the state of the band:
“I don’t really know what makes sense any more. I think you have to come to a place where you say, if you continue you continue with a particular vision, not keep rolling with the tide. Because the tide as it is I don’t think it’s that great. I’m not saying that the audience isn’t great, or that the band isn’t great. Something about it all feels a little too nicey nice. I’m not in a rock and roll band to be nicey nice, it’s just not my thing.”
“I think I’ve kind of backed into a corner and I don’t think there’s an obvious next step out. Stopping might be part of that, or going back to a very radical musically intensive position might be a part of that.”
“Maybe the obvious next step is to do nothing.”
“There’s no doubt in my mind that there is still plenty of Smashing Pumpkins music to be made. No matter what anybody thinks, because I believe, as the architect off what worked, pick your era, I believe I can make it work with any combination of anybody if I really want to. Maybe that sounds insane, but that’s the way I look at it.”
Corgan also discussed veteran bands from the 90′s who don’t have the same passion they used to, and seeing unenthusiastic musicians at festivals, “I’m part of the problem, and I don’t know if I want to continue to be part of the problem.” He said there is a malaise in his business, and nobody is high fiving each other about playing songs that are older than their kids.

In Part 4 of Crestfallen owner Jonathan Monte’s new interview with Smashing Pumpkins frontman William Corgan, Corgan continued to discuss his desire to put the Smashing Pumpkins on hiatus and his problems with his career.
On the state of his career: “The one thing that you know, and I know, is that excellence at the highest level trumps every argument, which is why a filmmaker who is on the dust heap if he makes the brilliant film, or if she makes the brilliant film, suddenly they can have a comeback. Robert Downey Jr., the top to the bottom to the top. So anything is possible with excellence, in his case, I’m lucky enough to know him barely, he’s a fantastic actor, no doubt about it. The guy’s a great actor and he deserves to be a big movie star and I’m happy that he’s back where he belongs, because that’s where he belongs. Maybe that’s it, maybe there’s only room for me in that dust heap when I’m at my best best best best. Maybe that’s what I’m trying to say. Maybe the days of hoping the audience is willing to let me be less than robotically perfect or, do you want to follow me down B-side lane, young Jonathan. Do you understand? Maybe all those days are over, and there’s only one thing left to do.”
He later said, “I’m not going to continue on this [current] path, but I think we’re on a path where if we kind of were willing to kind of slog our way through the next 4 or 5 years, we could kind of come out the other end. But I don’t see doing that.” On Smashing Pumpkins’ 2007-2013 resurrection: “If 50 songs were released and 10 were excellent and 40 were shit, well at least you got 10 more excellent songs. It wouldn’t have existed [without bringing the band back].”
