Let's get this out there right now: this is an extremely difficult album to 'review'. As a Smashing Pumpkins fan for many, many years I have found that after a few listens that I am conflicted on my feelings of this album. It's a beautifully tragic piece of work that everyone should listen to but, in my opinion, creates a disconnect with the listener that will resonate with a handful but be a significantly disjointed experience for others. Here is my polarizing thoughts on this auditory experience:
The Positives
The Smashing Pumpkins have not only found a way to rediscover the true sound they have established for many years up through Adore, but have evolved that sound into a groundbreaking auditory experience. One of the most exciting things I experienced listening to this album was how many musical 'surprises' stimulated my ears during my entire listen through. Smashing Pumpkins have always been known for creating unique sounding songs and finding unique ways to combine different instruments and chords that results in a unique sound unlike any other but in some way or another makes sense artistically. Billy Corgan and crew have done this again and, in my opinion have put together a brilliant sound that is compelling and has me longing to hear more. The textures and complexities create a piece of work that had me finding new things in the song with each listen. Billy Corgan has always excelled as an artist and this album takes his art form to a new level. I applaud how he has not only rediscovered his former sound...but evolved it.
The Negatives or 'Conflict'
Everyone looks for something different in music. For me, one of the things that allowed me to connect to the Pumpkins in years past was the ability to connect to me as a listener and to accurately convey the thoughts and feelings of the listener into a musical form. From 'Gish' all the way through 'Adore', Smashing Pumpkins were exceptional at creating songs that would connect to us and create melodies that would haunt our minds even after listening to the album. Sure, there are the popular songs like "Today" or "1979" that are popular examples, but songs like "Quiet"..."Bodies"... "Pug" or even "Ugly" (Aeroplane Flies High box set) and many others also had the Smashing Pumpkins ability to stick with you and connected with us as listeners. The band always felt like they were just like us but found a way to be bigger than life and be the voice for those who felt like we were unheard. The problem with Oceania that I faced was a complete lack of connection with Smashing Pumpkins. These songs don't have a 'musical identity' in terms of having a true organized form/melody that will stick in your head and leave you admiring the work, but not connecting with the work. The songs seem to lack the focus that Smashing Pumpkins had in their previous albums during their Siamese Dream/Melon Collie/Adore years as Billy seems to lack the control at times to find ways to relate to us as listener. In short, the connection that Billy Corgan and crew had with us in the past is absent in this album which results in a work that is beautiful to behold but will leave many disconnected. The Smashing Pumpkins are not the voice for us...but moreso themselves. It's an existential auditory experience as they discover themselves and where you are amazed at THEIR music brilliance...but feel disconnected during the journey. The lack of these core melodies have stripped away for me what Smashing Pumpkins so great. Artists desperately look for new ways to inspire their audience and I applaud Smashing PUmpkins for their attempt to break new ground in their sound...but I do wis they found ways to stay grounded enough so we can connect and join them in their journey.
Smashing Pumpkins prep for ‘Oceania’ tour at Chicagoland venue
The Smashing Pumpkins are currently engaged in eight days of production rehearsals for the Oceania tour, which kicks off July 26 in Mount Claremont, Australia. The rehearsals have been taking place at the Odeum Expo Center in Villa Park, Illinois, an outer suburb of Chicago. Such a large practice venue was necessary because the band is planning a complex stage show featuring a glowing orb and digitally-mapped visuals.
In a recent interview with Exclaim.ca, Smashing Pumpkins head Billy Corgan remarked, “”With the production we have, we have this big staging, so we can really only play big places. The good news is we can only play big places. The bad news is we better sell enough tickets to play big places.”
So far, we know the Pumpkins will be hitting Australia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Taiwan, and South Korea in July and August. A North American tour is expected for fall.

Когда был остановлен проект «Teargarden By Kaleidyscope», по ходу которого должны были выйти 44 песни Smashing Pumpkins по нескольку штук за раз, лидер коллектива Билли Корган пребывал в ярости.
Как человеку старой формации и гениальному музыканту ему явно надоело слушать вопли о том, что «Билли исписался», «растерял форму», «занимается графоманской фигней под прикрытием проекта вокруг символики карт Таро». Напрашивался контрудар. Недаром Билли ценит рестлинг и обожествляет героев этого странного спорта: комичного, но как никакой другой воспевающего поднятие человека с колен.
В музыке Корган тоже занимал позицию эдакого рестлера: много кричал, часто демонстрировал дурной вкус в одежде, признавался в любви к мачистскому року и в знак протеста против своей внешности франкенштейновского толка крутил романы с медиапроститутками типа Тилы Текилы и Джессики Симпсон.
За всё это Билли заплатил не хуже Халка Хогана, получившего за рестлерскую карьеру сто пятьдесят переломов копчика. В последнем большом материале Rolling Stone он и вовсе представал чокнутым социопатом, которому только и есть дело вспоминать прошлые бои, отца-алкаша, да сокрушаться ожирению.
И это при том, что когда The Smashing Pumpkins записывали альбом-камбэк «Zeitgeist», Билли походил не на завсегдатая пивной, а на легионера Римской империи. Набрать килограммов двадцать заняло у Билли года полтора.
Тем не менее, как и всякий рестлер, размазанный по полу другой мускулистой тушей, Корган нашел силы подняться, отряхнуть с плеч все эти карты Таро и разговоры о творческом бессилии, а затем записать «Oceania», свой лучший диск начиная с «Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness», а по общей конструкции и вовсе напоминающий работы The Smashing Pumpkins начала 90-х - «Gish» и «Siamese Dream», по которым Билли прошелся в недавних делюксовых переизданиях. «Oceania» напоминает сборник лучших хитов Коргана за вычетом маниакально-исступленных вещей, которым еще видимо придет свой черед.
Корган в последнее время часто подшучивает над тем, что журналистами он уже не воспринимается всерьез как сонграйтер. С одной стороны, это кокетство прошедшего все круги ада ветерана гитарных баталий: даже сыграв считанное число соло на диске (так уж устроены теперь композиции SP), Билли остается guitar hero. Его рокочущий и визжащий «фендер» доминирует уже в самом начале - барочная сюита «Quasar» по уровню риффов вполне сопоставима с классикой Pumpkins «Cherub Rock», причем сразу становится понятно, что неприглядный внешне Корган будет весь альбом петь нарочито молодым голосом, артикулируя каждое слово.
Самым важным из словаря Коргана является понятие «любовь», которое он проговаривает на «Oceania» десятки раз, словно гипнотизер, старающийся вогнать слушателя в транс. В принципе, эту миссию обеспечивают два первых тяжелых трека, после которых начинается демонстрация всего, на что Билли способен. Тут и божественной красоты готик-американа «Pale Horse», и перегруженные гитарами романсы, вызывающие в памяти технологичные симфонии «Machina» и позднего Боуи («Glissandra»), и волшебный синти-поп «Pinwheels» в традиции «Adore», и сорвавшаяся с катушек оптимистичная гитарная психоделия a la Zwan («The Chimera»).
Oceania - это собрание лучших песен, которые мог в принципе написать поверженный Корган, и если, восстав со своего ринга, Билли найдет в себе силы сделать новый шаг, можно ждать от него как минимум современной классики.

По легенде, «Oceania» данное Билли обещание не нарушает, а встраивается в общий концепт (это, мол, «альбом в альбоме»), но кто его разберет. Так или иначе, чувак верен себе: первый же трек, ураганный «Quasar», напоминает его же «Cherub Rock» и группу Deep Purple, вступление «Pinwheels» — переложенных в стилистике детских колыбельных The Who, мелодии «One Diamond, One Heart» не постеснялся бы Крис Мартин, а как никогда обильных синтезаторных переливов — Евгений Крылатов. В еще одной замечательной песне, «Violet Rays», Билли и вовсе грозится расцеловать любого желающего — и нет ни единой причины ему не верить.
Градус восторга от чудачеств любимого автора несколько спадает где-то на середине заглавного девятиминутного прог-эпоса — то есть, как ни странно, именно в тот момент, когда Корган принимается беззастенчиво вдохновляться собой образца «Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness» («Pale Horse») или того же «Siamese Dream» («The Chimera»).
Масштаб, размах, драматичные соло и многоходовые аранжировки — это, конечно, тоже прекрасно, но от сегодняшнего Билли хочется другого. Болтливый, высокомерный и мстительный, в современном рок-н-ролле Корган — большая лысая капсула неразумного, недоброго, но, как ни крути, вечного. Его нишу — иногда самодура, немного правдоруба, местами Шевчука, где-то AC/DC — не занять никому, и задорно плыть против течения ему идет куда больше, чем триумфально возвращаться к истокам. В конце концов, как уже было сказано, он такой один.

In a video posted today to the Smashing Pumpkins’ official YouTube account, bandleader Billy Corgan gives fans an introduction to the band’s ongoing Oceania tour. Corgan discusses topics including how the band went about translating the songs of Oceania to the stage, the writing process for “Panopticon,” the process of selecting of songs for the tour, the creation of the tour’s complex visuals, and his bandmates’ contributions to Oceania.

SMASHING PUMPKINS RELEASE ‘PANOPTICON’ AS SECOND OCEANIA SINGLE

The Smashing Pumpkins have released “Panopticon” to radio as the second single off of Oceania. The first single off of the album was “The Celestials,” which has performed modestly on radio peaking at #29 on the U.S. Alternative Songs chart and #45 on the U.S. Rock Songs chart. No videos have been filmed for either song.
Oceania has sold over 102,000 copies in the United States, but has done very well critically. The album debuted at #4 in the United States with 54,000 copies sold in its first week. The band’s previous album Zeitgeist debuted at #2 in the United States with 145,000 copies sold in its first week back in July 2007. That album’s lead single, “Tarantula,” peaked at #2 on the Hot Modern Rock Tracks chart.
