Jeff is lobbying in support of this measure. We are too. (YESSSSS!) # News on The Chicago Kid Project: it’s now curated by Matt Walker who has discovered approximately 72 songs from era. They’re currently trying to go through and curate all the live, studio, and video media that exists and hopefully put together something by next year. Billy mentions Christmas.

Billy was in this week to record a track for Ray Davies the two of them are collaborating on a remake of Destroyer: Mr. Mark Tulin from The Electric Prunes played bass and Kevin Dippold engineered the track.
“Destroyer” — itself a bit of a remake, as it incorporates the riff from the Kinks’ “All Day and All of the Night,” which Zwan covered several times on its April 2002 tour of the Midwest — was a U.S. hit for the Kinks in 1981.

Here is an excerpt in which Corgan analyzes the current “moment” for him and his band:
Right now I’m in a very unique position because I’m standing right at this kind of crossroads where I’ve done the impossible. I’ve managed to put a band onstage that people are accepting, when you’re not supposed to be able to do that. People are actually enjoying the shows, even more so than two years ago. I’m having new success when I’m not supposed to be having new success. So, we’re right at this sort of beautiful moment when it’s like, “There’s still energy here, what’s going on, curiosity, media, fans, concerts,” and it’s sort of a beautiful honeymoon moment — that won’t last.
And I’ve already told the band, internally, “This is about a year.” A year from now the difference will be, “Do we stand on our own in this moment with the new music that I’m going to write?” It’s a nice balance right now of honoring the past, honoring the present, and indications of a bright future. But ultimately the clock is ticking on that and I feel we got about a year. Basically, in the next year I need to prove that I have a whole ‘nother — something to say.

It was announced Wednesday that the Smashing Pumpkins will be heading to Australia for a string of five shows spread across across the country in a week, starting off in Perth on October 12th and finishing off in Brisbane on October 17th. A 24 hour pre-sale available to “Frontier Touring Company Members” begins at noon AEST (trust you Aussies know what/when that means) on September 14th, with the general on-sale kicking off on September 16th at 9am (local time in each city, it seems).
The venues are all in the 2,000-2,500 capacity range. Take notice that the show at the The Tivoli in Brisbane is listed as being an 18+ event while the rest are all ages.
Europe, where the 21st century Pumpkins debuted in 2007, is no doubt wondering when its turn will arrive in this slowly developing world tour.

I asked Billy what speed teargarden theme was suppose to be played at.. and he changed the subject to asking if anyone had heard the alt version Teargarden Theme that was suppose to be on the 7" with the lucky 100 gold obelisk . Since no one has seem to reportedly gotten one of the 100 by my report to him (and if there have been ones i hadn't heard anything about it.) Billy picked up his Blackberry and sent out an email right then and there to find out what happen.
EMI had done some research costing some 3 million dollars and they found out that SP has a strong core base and that the casual fan has a positive perception of Smashing Pumpkins. He mention that the Gish box set really looked like a go. EMI had done a lot of market research and saw that doing something with Gish would make good sales. SP gave them what they would require to be an expectable deal before the 7 EMI people left. But when it came back it was so far off that Billy said that his lawyer (who happens to be a she) laughed at them and they just said screw it. And this meeting happen like a year ago, Billy was reserved about putting out the box on his own because if the Gish box didn't sell then that could screw it for future projects
He also mention again how the music companies are looking for a new model to do business for the past 10 years with the introduction of the internet, and he felt that things are still in a change. But the thing that hasn't changed is that the bands are still being treated by the record companies, with the attitude of you need us, we don't need you. Which is completely wrong.
seven years after Billy's Warner Bro contract is expired Billy will retain all the rights to the songs from Zwan, his solo album and Zeitgeist. He owns the rights to everything Gish and pre. along with some 28 shows that were video taped (which if i recall right was before Gish came out)
Billy mention that their are pretty much instrumentals of every song post Gish that he would like to put out sometime. He cancel the archive project because of the lack of support of the core fans. He mention a number of 300k would needed to be put into the project (that number could of just been a number), but he can't just hope that it works out without fan support. The fans need to help put the money out there first to get it going. But all the talk of "well what if it sucks?" is really what killed it
He also said he would love to go to China, but has never been made an offer.
and the best part was at one point i asked about the change of his twitter icon to the 2 horses, and he kind of laughed and said "Monte you need to spend more time with your beautiful wife"
i also joked with him about how my supportive wife was ok with us going to santa barbara. I had told her lets go on a romantic get away to Santa Barbara on Labor Day weekend, but do u mind if we see an SP concert, they just happen to be there

She’s a really beautiful person inside and out. Those two girls are so talented. I was recently in a writing session with them, they legit, and I’ve told them this, they could both be world class solo artists. It’s crazy they’re both together. They feed off each other’s strengths and weakness. It’s really interesting to watch them work. I really am impressed by both of them musically a lot. I’ve heard a lot of their new stuff, the direction they’re going is really really cool. It’s still very much pop music, but they’re so sophisticated in their knowledge of pop music.
..So you’re writing with Jess and Lisa?
It’s more hanging out fun stuff, not like a super pro thing. That’s how I met them, they asked me to write a song, that was the beginning of the whirlwind.
You’ve said you’re in a good place, is that due to being loved up?
I was in a good place and that’s why I ended up in a good relationship. Both of us have been in stormy relationships. You’ve got to be ready to be in a great relationship. Being with someone as beautiful and talented as Jess is you’ve gotta be real. You can’t be a fake version of something. In our lives in a lot of ways it’s all about fake. You’ve got people wanting things for fake reasons. The people you end up closest to are your family and friends. We both understand what it’s like to be not really understood. We have that support for each other and understand what each other are going through. It’s only made my life better. She’s brought a lot of sunshine in my life, but I was ready to receive it. The window was open. If she’d met me a few years ago I don’t know if I would have understood her, she’s just such a unique person, there’s not a lot of people I’ve ever met who are like her. You look at her, she works the homeless glam look, but inside she’s just a sweetie pie. She’s very spiritual, very much about family. We both have Italian background, we laugh and say this is really an Italian relationship.
Is Jessica coming to Australia on this tour?
Can’t say for sure but that’s the plan.
Have you performed on stage together yet?
Not yet. They both love my song Eye, I’m hoping Jess and Lisa will get up and perform Eye with us at some point. We’ll see. She was with me in Mexico, I was trying to get her up on stage but she was too shy.
And you’ve met the parents?
Yep. It’s all great. Everyone’s really nice. She comes from a great family. It’s all good.
So you’re going out with Australian pop royalty…
She’s going out with American rock royalty.
You got photographed together on your visit to Australia with the sisters earlier this year.
It’s all silliness to me. I’ve certainly heard about her past tabloid dramas! I’ve been through all that, to me it doesn’t mean anything. The good thing about being crazy is what are they going to say? He’s crazy? Uh huh. Oh he’s evil? Yeah. He’s old? Yes and getting older. It’s all there. None of it is going to affect me, I’m in a good place, I’m happy, I’m proud to have a woman like her on my arm. She’s someone I really look up to.
You’re bringing Smashing Pumpkins back to Australia with a slightly new line up, what’s different from when we saw you at the V Festival in 2008?
I loved that tour but the way we were playing on that tour was a little bit of the old Smashing Pumpkins mentality, the poke your finger in your chest thing. We didn’t do what people wanted us to do. It’s a little kinder, gentler these days.
Is there a battle for you between playing old hits and showing people you’re still writing new material?
I’ve come into a different place of peace with that. It’s a simple formula for me now, I don’t play any song I don’t want to play. I don’t care what song it is. At the same time I don’t play too much new stuff and I don’t play too much old stuff. Maybe the concert’s a little shorter but the show feels lighter and more to the point.
Did you play songs you didn’t want to play to keep people happy?
I made a bargain in my brain which was `Ok if I’m gonna play these five songs you want to hear I’ll play these five songs I don’t give a f--- if you don’t wanna hear’. I’d play songs that were a bit hard to digest in a live context. That was the trade off I was making. I’ve gotten out of that kind of relationship with myself. It probably sounds a bit silly and childish, but now it’s all coming from a good place. I tend to be reactionary. Sometimes you can create something in your mind that’s not there. Right now we’re not playing 1979 and no one’s complaining because the show is good.
Do you feel like you have something more to prove now you’re the only original Pumpkin in this line up?
I feel my public persona at times has overshadowed my musical accomplishment. I get frustrated when I see people who’ve done less than me and had less success than me enjoying more ass-kissing. I’m held up to different standards. I partially asked for that to happen. I’ve always invited the toughest rock and roll questions with the Smashing Pumpkins. At the same time I’m in my 20th year here of putting out records. It’s not a mistake I wandered into the garden. I’ve had success literally for 20 years, that’s a long time in a business that chews people up and spit them up. So I get frustrated when I feel I have to prove something. So in a childish way in the past my reaction would be to over-prove the point. You want heavy Pumpkins? I’ll give you evil Pumpkins. You want hit songs? I’ll give you hit songs, I just won’t play them the way you want to hear them. I’m out of that now. I’m really happy to play the songs in the way they were recorded, in a way that the whole history of the band is respected. Because I’m respecting my own past. But I’m not a slave to do it. I’ve saved all my money, I don’t need to do or be anything. I’m an independent artist, I’m not on a label, I literally just do what I want to do.
There are fans who’d want to freeze frame you in the Siamese Dream era ...
I know. My friends tell me they saw Bruce Springsteen show where people would only cheer when he played songs form the 80s and they’d talk through new songs. It’s a cultural thing. It’s an old fashioned way to look at music, the `hope I die before I get old’ mentality, that rock and roll doesn’t have a future. You’re too young and dumb when you have your moment and when by the time you realise it you’re too old and on drugs and it’s too late. We’re writing a new rock and roll story, you get up to too close to the sun, you burn out, you crash to the ground but then you pick yourself up and dust off what still means something. There’s a lot of bands way past any point people thought they’d exist AC/DC, the Stones, Paul McCartney. The key for me is releasing new music of a high quality. That’s where I differentiate myself from a lot of peers, they’re just out there making money, they’re not putting out new music and if they are it’s sh-- music. I want to be judged against the highest quality of work not that just that I’ve ever done but that anyone has done. I refuse to become an oldies act. I’m just not interested. I think it’s f---ing boring. And I think anyone who thinks that way is f---ing boring. If you want to come and only hear five songs they’re welcome to, they might get those songs but that’s not what the show is about, those songs are integrated into a much bigger picture.
You’re giving away the new Smashing Pumpkins songs for free on your website so presumably people have heard your new songs?
Yes. But there’s a perception issue that the past was glorious and perfect and the present is some lesser version of that. It’s just not true. You’ve just got to keep putting out quality music. When a 15 year old discovers Pink Floyd from 1970, he doesn’t give a f--- that line up of the band doesn’t exist. He’ll go to You Tube and find some old bootleg live clip. All bands are existing all the time now. When people get sentimental I say there’s tons of videos and record. The old Smashing Pumpkins exist, go listen to them. I’m in the new Smashing Pumpkins, I’m making new music. Don’t weigh me down with something that’s not real. I’m playing songs that represent my past the way I want to be represented. There’s no compromise in that. That way I’m a happy person. I’m not a conflicted artist, I’m in a really happy place. I’ve survived. I’m not burnt out. I haven’t done drugs for ten years. I’m happy, I’m a little fat. That’s about it.
What do you say to people who still think you’re going to reunite the original line up?
The band has really been about the truth. We had a drummer (Jimmy Chamberlain) who was whacked out of his band on drugs, we kicked him out of the band because he was gonna die. You know how many millions that decision cost me? I was more interested in this guy living than making more money. Anyone else would have stopped for three months, put him in rehab and put him right back on tour. This is the truth. I’m gonna play my music. If your reason for not going, whether there’s one original member, two original members, there original members…if that’s your sole reason for not going you’re not a fan of my music and certainly don’t respect what I’ve accomplished. So you’d go if it was Billy Corgan playing Smashing Pumpkins songs but not if it’s Billy Corgan in Smashing Pumpkins playing Smashing Pumpkins songs. Doesn’t that sound shallow? I don’t live in a shallow world. I don’t give a f--- about the pop world. That world isn’t there for me in the down times, when I doubt myself, when I’m scared or lost or feeling lonely. That world only cares about me when they like me. When you learn that lesson again and again you realise that the only thing that matters is what you believe in, what you love, those you love and those that love you. If someone is not going to come see me play after 20 f---ing years because they disagree with the way I present myself and not even give me an opportunity… I meet fans who are excited to be a Smashing Pumpkins fans again because we’re going to keep releasing new music. It’s back to why they liked the band. They didn’t love the band because they loved James, D’Arcy, Jimmy and Billy, they loved the band because the band represented something they believed in, they liked the message, they liked the music. What about the fan that says I love Siamese Dream? Me and Jimmy made the whole record. So you’re not going to go because the drummer’s not there but the guy who wrote almost the whole record is there. They’re arguments for the pop world. I live in alternative world, I don’t live by those rules. I don’t give a f--- about those rules.
Presumably you don’t want to share a stage with your former bandmates…
Why would I get on stage with someone who doesn’t call me for Christmas? Because the guy in the back row who doesn’t give a f-- about my new song, that’s the only way he wants to hear Bullet with Butterfly Wings? They’re silly arguments to me. I understand. I really do. I’ve been in that situation as fan, it’s only one or two original members in a band. I’ve seen bands with members who weren’t part of the original band and I really enjoyed the show, I enjoyed the way they played. And I’ve seen original line ups where they obviously hate each other and it’s boring because there’s no chemistry. It’s more about people’s fantasy. It’s like their porn. It’s their porn fantasy of my world but my world has never been like that. When was my band ever intact? The only time the band only really worked together on the same page in any way that resembles normalcy was Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness and even then I still did 85% of those songs.

That show is so f---ing brilliant.
How did you discover that?
Me Aussie girlfriend. When someone says `You have to watch this it’s so brilliant’, Everyone says that but within an hour I was addicted. Over three days we had a Summer Heights High marathon, that’s all we did, watch that show. I can’t wait for his new show.
Can we talk the C word – Courtney Love? There was a lot of drama about you not wanting to release the songs you wrote on Hole’s latest album …
It’s complicated. At the time I was living in her house. Tabloids reported we were back together, I haven’t had any kind of romantic relationship with her since the early 90s. But I was living in her house, I worked on that record for a really long time. I contributed; I was trying to help with her and Linda Perry. She’s a great artist, I’ve always believed in her ability and certainly have looked the other way with her issues. Out of the blue she’s talking shit. She’s got that crazy thing where she creates fantasies if people don’t do what she wants them to do, like saying I snuck onto her record. If you look at her latest set list one third are my songs, or I should say songs I made serious contributions to, I wrote the chorus or the riff. The irony to tell the world totally untrue things about me, and then to go on stage, act like a prima donna and play songs I wrote I just think don’t play my songs if my contribution is so worthless. She’s rendered herself irrelevant. She’s always going to be a great artist but she’s betrayed the important things that made her great so all that’s left is her fire. If people want to go watch her burn herself on stage, well, there’s always going to be someone who wants to see that. But judging by the attendances in America, she’s doing shows for 300 people, 200 people. She’s dug her own grave, I don’t have to do it for her.

I don’t know anything about that but it doesn’t surprise me. There’s no shortage of words to try and describe a pathological creature like Courtney Love
Can we talk about you recording with Jessica Simpson?
This is what it was. She was working on a song for her TV show. She played me the demo, it had potential, so she asked me to help on the song. I wrote a new part, I didn’t play on it, I helped it get in the right direction. That’s all it was.
So to clarify, were you dating Jessica Simpson?
Ah … I don’t know what to say about any of that. If you try to talk about it at all, because she’s such a tabloid figure, there’s no right answer. I have no interest in feeding that. She’s a great person, I care about her as a person, I have nothing bad to say about her, she’s a lovely person behind the scenes. I have no interest in feeding that fire. Courtney I don’t mind kicking dirt on because she’s just an idiot and she continues to slag me off. I’m enough of a gentleman not to talk about the things I’ve seen. She’s literally making stuff up. Believe me, if I told people what I’d really seen, well, if she thinks she’s got problems now…
Do you have any favorite Smashing Pumpkins covers?
Good question. The Passion Pit version of Tonight Tonight was really beautiful. I wish more people would cover my songs.
The first Smashing Pumpkins album Gish turns 20 next year. Any plans for a reissue? Is there a lot of unreleased stuff in the vault?
We have the worst relationship with our old record label. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve tried to get something going. We’ve got so much cool stuff. We hired a professional music archivist at one point to look at what we have in the vaults. He said he’d never seen anything like it. And that’s what he does for a living. He was overwhelmed. We have so much stuff because I always documented everything. We have the first 60 Smashing Pumpkins shows on tape in some form or another. If you are that interested you can literally sit and hear the band from the first gig to the entire build up to the first album Gish, how we got there, horrible gigs, bad songs, the whole thing. We want to put it all out, there’s an audience out there constantly asking for it, but our old record label is just living in some other universe and they’re just not interested. It might come out for 25th anniversary record.
Tell us about the new Pumpkins song you’ve just uploaded, Spangled.
It’s a pretty song. I really like it a lot. It’s classic Pumpkins. It’s been an interesting journey. I’m so excited to be invested in the future of the Smashing Pumpkins again. For a long time it felt with my past `Can I f---ing move on? Can I grow up? Can I get old’. I’m that space now where it is about the future again and I’m excited.
The new line up of the Pumpkins – were they fans of the band before they joined?
Totally. They beg me to play songs. They’re fans. That’s the beautiful thing. They have this really interesting take on what matters to a Smashing Pumpkins fans. They’re not just someone I hired to play the bass. They’re part of the discussion about what it takes to have integrity. It’s simple. We’re coming to Australia. We’re going to tear the house down. People are not going to walk out of those show disappointed. Believe me, I’ve seen people who have seen 40 shows. They have their arms crossed at the start, their hands are in the air by the end. They thank me because they got their fucking band back. That band people who have the fantasy back, that band can’t get on stage. So your choices are what exists or no existences. If that’s the choice, I’m going with what exists. I’m not going back to the other thing. It ain’t going to happen. It’s a fantasy. It’s a porn fantasy, we’re all going to get on stage and hold hands and wave and play all of Siamese Dream perfect. It’s not going to happen. Grow the f--- up. It’s a new world. What would Mr G do? Would Mr G accept this?

In a recent chat with a fan and a new video interview with Artisan News Service, Billy Corgan has belatedly provided some reason to care about this way-obscure trinket: in those few copies of the EP containing the pyrite, the seven-inch vinyl bears a different take on the instrumental “Teargarden Theme” than that heard on the other 9,901 copies.
Here’s what Corgan said in the relevant portion of the Artisan interview:
There are a group of people who want to collect things; I’m one of those types of people. So what we try to do is make sure there’s something about it that’s a little bit more special than just your average release, with the artwork, with the packaging. In the first EP we put a song that is not readily available on a piece of seven-inch vinyl. And then, 99 of them had actually a different version of the song on the vinyl — so if you found sort of the golden-ticket version, you got a different version of the seven-inch. Just things like that, just fun little treasure-hunt kind of things.

по плотности саунда это скорей Freak напоминает. Надеюсь, что путы тиргарденовского лоу-фай концепта Корган сбросит окончательно, ибо заебал уже (извините, но это действительно так) это унитазный саунд. Где жир, бл*? Где, бл*, исполинская мощь? Раньше, даже баллады и всякие сопливые темы, вроде Lily (My One & Only) с альбома 1995 года, у Коргана получались совсем иного свойства. А сейчас что? Ждали и получили Spangled. Ни рыба, ни мясо. Freak так себе, фриканутая и ничего более. Spangled - даже не хочу говорить. Fellowship - пока что вызывает недоумение.
ну и в общем-то не факт, что Tom Tom попадёт на EP #2. Последняя "живая" версия этой песни скорей похожа на какое-то недоразумение, имхо конечно же, но что поделать, ударные - говно, и против этого не попрёшь. Но сопротивлялся я долго.
в целом, из второго EP пока что по-настоящему нравится только обложка=) всё так грустно, аж пох*й.

Блин Spangled в акустике и в хорошем качестве хорошо звучит. не так убого как в Teargarden варианте. Новая песня не плоха!!! 2 раза послушал очень хорошее впечатление!

Да хрен знает, не думаю, что это связано с возрастом. Видимо, душевное состояние у него сейчас неподходящее для творчества. В 90-е источником его лирики были сложное детство, любовные неудачи, смерть матери, проблемы внутри группы, а теперь он стал плейбоем, тусит со звездами и в каждом интервью говорит, что счастлив как никогда раньше. Хотелось бы ошибаться, т.к. это звучит жестоко, но счастливый Корган нам не подходит. =)

Согласен с Максом. Раньше у Лысого действительно были взлеты и падения, и он был гораздо молод и дух бунтарства в нём бурлил Что видимо нехило отразилось на его психическом здоровье.

Акустический вариант мне тоже понравился! Голос у него в этом варианте отличный.

At least for now, new Smashing Pumpkins track The Fellowship” is indeed exclusive to the Vampire Diaries soundtrack. Online retailers Amazon (99 cents), iTunes ($1.29), and Walmart ($1.24) put the song on sale this morning along with the rest of the soundtrack album.
The Fellowship will also appear next month on the second EP from the Pumpkins’ in-progress album Teargarden by Kaleidyscope. It is the seventh song to be released from that project and the first to be offered for sale prior to being offered as a free download. (Freak, another Teargarden cut, can be purchased on iTunes but previously was and still is available for free.)

Billy Corgan, lead singer of the Smashing Pumpkins and all around Chicago music legend, has been trying to sell his Gold Coast condo without much luck. Now, Corgan's condo in a vintage Chicago mansion is available for rent.
The 2 bedroom, 2.5 bath home can be yours for a mere $10,000 a month. The condo was initially listed for $5.5 million in September of 2008 and has been reduced to $3.55 million.
The condo is located at 1500 N. Astor Place in the vintage Patterson-McCormick mansion, built in 1892.
Though it only 2 bedrooms, the second floor condo offers 3,700 square-feet of living space and includes a reception room, library, four wood-burning fireplaces, 10-foot ceilings throughout and a private balcony.

My. God. Really? Who's uh, using the Smashing Pumpkins moniker to sell records and tour, even though he’s the only original member left? Who released an exclusive "Target Edition" of that last terrible record Zeitgeist? Who recorded music with mainstream pop star Jessica Simpson? Who really fucking cares? Shouldn’t he focus on his own career? Every idiotic thing that comes out of his mouth further invalidates anything good he ever did. He just takes himself so painfully seriously. Okay, my rant is over.
But this bad blood runs deep. In 1994 Pavement released Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain, an album featuring the single Range Life, in which Stephen Malkmus describes going "out on tour" with Smashing Pumpkins. (Pavement never actually toured with them.) "I don't understand what they mean," he sings, "and I could really give a fuck." Corgan was reportedly so angry that he had Pavement removed from Lollapalooza's bill. "I think it's rooted in jealousy," Corgan said at the time, and, later: "People don't fall in love to Pavement ... they put on Smashing Pumpkins or Hole or Nirvana, because these bands actually mean something to them."
Malkmus has often tried to downplay the conflict. "A lot of people claim we dissed [Smashing Pumpkins]," he told NY Rock magazine in 1999. "We never did. I only laughed about the band name, because it does sound kind of silly ... I like their songs – well, most of their songs anyway ... I just dissed their status. I never really cared for the rock'n'roll lifestyle or being indie." In 2008, Malkmus told Blender magazine that "Billy's gotten over it".

And the millions of tagged pictures of them holding and hugging a girl not from Chile, who's personality shines hotter than the Chilean sun- Nicole Fiorintino.

Корган зае*** со своими намеками на то что альбомная концепция умерла. если альбом хороший то и слушать его хочется целиком. А конешно, если он говно то максимум что приходиться взять оттуда пару песен а остальные удалить! Как бы это вдолбить в его тупую лысую башку. Как раз тоже самое происходит с его текущим альбомом. у половины народу нет новых 8 песен как мне предпологается, у меня вот тока последние 4 валяются на винте, причем "спангл" можно удалить и забыть, потомучто я не могу слушать эту приметивную песню.

да что там переводить? Коргна надеется, что у всех замечательный день. Коргна счастлива и довольна. У Коргны выдалось несколько свободных дней перед тем, как они отправятся в Техас, чтобы начать завершающую часть тура, а затем группа уходит на каникулы.

first thing that comes to mind is that we only had about 6 days to prepare the about 14 or so extra songs that we added to try to make the show both historic and memorable. normally this much work in such a short time would have been met with resistance, but everyone was in good spirits to have the 11 months of touring finally over
pt 2
my original plan was to book the metro out for the whole month of January and make one last album, writing songs and recording them live in rehearsal and then playing them at night at the 'shows'...can't remember how many shows we would have done per week? maybe 3 or 4. Iha+ Auf Der Maur hated the idea and said no…. a shame, could have been amazing. band was tight at that point and i was motivated to write more.
pt 3
we had the 2nd to last show at The United Center, and we wanted to film that as well. unfortunately the building wanted to charge us (i could be wrong but...) 50,000$ just for the 'right' to film, not counting the actual costs it would have been to film. so there is no video that i know of. if there is it might be… a lone camera. that show was amazing, although we were criticized for opening the show acoustic
pt 4
we had been opening with 5 songs acoustic in Europe as a way to set a different tone because each night the audience was thinking they were seeing the band for the last time. there the audiences went with the somber beginning, and so i stupidly assumed that an American audience would go the same way with it. Wrong…! once we finally lit it up with 'glass' theme (song 6) the place went nuts
pt 5
for the Metro show itself, we found someone to be a clown in between acts, to hold the sign up announcing each of the 3 parts. what most people don't know is that the kid doing it (a total coincidence) was related to Jonathon Melvoin. i found out before the show, but i took it as a sign that his spirit was with us… in the building that night so i said i was fine with
pt 6
we played 38 songs i believe, over 4 hours of music. i had never p[layed that long before, nor have i since. i wasn't even sure my voice would hold up that long, but it did. actually it got stronger as the night went on. the first song was 'rocket', which we were supposed to play after the mellon collie theme intr…o, which was played off a cd. the theme finished, i lit into the opening riff of 'rocket'.
pt 7
unfortunately, no one turned off the cd, , so as i was playing i heard 'tonight, tonight' come blaring out of the p.a....classic SP fuck-up for trying to be fancy. the show as i remember was fairly good, but incredibly hot and at about 90 min in the crowd was just totally worn out. i thoughtto myself 'wow, we got a long way to go!'
pt 8
act 2 honestly felt like a sad funeral, and people started talking. i felt the whole thing slipping away from me, but i realized that it was all part of the journey of death that we were on. life moves on, and when the show was over i too had to move on. i honestly thought that it would be the last time i would pl…ay most of these songs, and it felt good to let them go.
pt 9
act three was designed to bring the energy back up, and it did. the last encore i think was 'silverfuck', which had a lot of improvisation in it. it wasn't all planned out, and i remember thinking of my deceased mother alot. it all came down to 'where was mommy?' in the end of it all, as it begins so does it end. …i turned to look at Jimmy and said 'that's it', and it ended without form best as i remember.

i broke down on stage crying but i remember being quite embarassed about it. i've thought about that moment many times, and i wish in hindsight that i'd let myself just have a good cry right then and there, because you won't find yourself in a spot like that many times in your life. after we had a little party, p…laying dvd bootlegs of the band on a screen on stage.
pt 11
once it was over, there was a shift, so playing the videos felt like watching a car crash again and again. it was overkill for everyone, including me. pictures and Chopin would have been better. i asked where James was, and someone had said he had left, without saying goodbye to me or Jimmy, a real final fuck you… in my eyes. outside of a phone conversation about business in 2001, i haven't seen him since

one more thing: please stop asking about the show ever coming out (i say this good heartedly). it will come out when the time is right. it should have come out in 2001 but EMI squashed it, and we got the rights back. hopefully it will be put out one day when tall he albums get re-issued. it would make sense for it to come out with the Machina era stuff.

i think as more time goes by we all should look at SP as having 2 totally different eras, 'old school' and 'new school' or whatever. call it what you want, the SP of 2005-2010 and counting has been a different animal, albeit with similar goals set in a different world.

'old' SP ended exactly 10 years ago this night, and it ain't ever coming back. from my vantage point, that's a good thing. that band will never sell out and never grow old gracefully (because honestly it couldn't). long live SP 1987-2000 a great fucking band when it was 'on'. and a nightmare when it was 'off'. thanks for checking out these thoughts/memories, love BC

[George Varga:] Pablo Picasso was, by all accounts, a total jerk who treated most people like dirt. Does that make his art less great or notable? Should we separate the art from the person who made it?
[Billy Corgan:] I think the art is the only thing that matters. I’m not saying the life of the artist shouldn’t be examined. But to put the life of the artist as the equal of the art is coming from the audience or the ‘perceiver,’ not from people who really understand art.
Let’s say you and I are taking a hike and I’ve just finished telling you what a horrible person I am. But at the end I tell you a parable that is the greatest parable you’ve ever heard. Does it diminish the parable because I’m a piece of [shit]? No. It might have more value because I’m a piece of [shit]. The modern world is very focused on negative aspects of the artist, because it’s part of some marketing campaign. When the personality is more important, you have a problem; the work will not hold up with time, but you get what you pay for.
If you need to believe that Radiohead would hang out with you at Starbucks because they’re good guys – and I’m not picking on them — if that’s what you need (to believe), I won’t argue with it. But I don’t get that. I think it’s really juvenile. I’m in the Duke Ellington school of thought, that there’s good music and bad music. I don’t know what kind of guy Howlin’ Wolf was, but I know the kind of guy I think he was.

we are working to make the new and the old work together to not mess up one or the other. the old should not be at the expense of moving the band forward, and moving forward should not be at the expense of properly honoring the past. all in balance, all helping make the best possible energy around SP world.
but make no mistake, Teargarden is the absolute #1 without a doubt priority of SP. everything else is a distant second to that. i would LOVE a proper form to start putting out remastered vinyl, unreased tracks, unseen concerts, and so on. there is alot to get at, as long as the right form to put it out is available.
i own all the ZWan rights, so yes, i can play those songs say on an acoustic tour if i wanted. i just don't have the right to release on my own the Zwan stuff until around 2014

You can understand the reluctance two decades after the real Chicago thing debuted. At least when he closed up shop the last time, with a pair of shows two years ago at this same venue, his attempt to pull a Pretenders still had Jimmy Chamberlin on drums, plus all of No Doubt’s auxiliary filling in the blanks. Now Corgan is backed by Mike Byrne, a ham-fisted drummer of little finesse, and flanked by what seem like junior apprentices: guitarist Jeff Schroeder, merely a pale imitation of his boss, and bassist Nicole Fiorentino, functioning as eye candy more than anchor (yet she doesn’t have half as much mystique as woebegone D’Arcy Wretzky.)
It left me perplexed, though their chunky stew can still coalesce into some hearty rocking when Corgan bothers to light a fire under it. Yet, apart from his indelible melodies and occasional Fender flourishes, this doesn’t even sound like the Pumpkins anymore, which I bet is his point; he’s rarely seemed in a better mood on stage, so maybe he’s finally achieving some Zen autonomy at last with this lineup.
I’m trying to reserve judgment, see where this Pumpkins 3.0 (4.0? higher?) might lead. But so far it feels too much like a cheat: “Bullet with Butterfly Wings” was recklessly rushed (and thus less impactful), “Tonight, Tonight” had no sense of whirlwind romantic urgency, and “Today” was borderline amateurish. And still I wish they’d selected more songs like those.
That’s my other beef: when initially presenting a newly carved Pumpkins, stuff its guts with as many Big Ones as possible. I know Corgan insists on chasing his idiosyncratic muse — it isn’t his style to leave off “Tarantula” and “Stand Inside Your Love” to make room for more popular fare like “Disarm” and “Cherub Rock” and “Zero,” all missing here. But this time that move was a mistake, and he failed to maintain audience interest. I wanted to leave after his rendition of Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide,” too; it’s the only thing I’ll remember from this set this time next year.

Billboard’s Gary Graff is reporting, on the basis of an interview with veteran rock drummer Matt Sorum, that Smashing Pumpkins honcho Billy Corgan helped out with a forthcoming record by former Runaways singer Cherie Currie.
Sorum is producing the record, which counts his Velvet Revolver/old Guns N’ Roses bandmates Slash and Duff McKagan among its “many guests.”

None of the 7 songs released last year by the Smashing Pumpkins was mentioned by any of the over 700 music critics who participated in the annual Village Voice Pazz & Jop singles poll. Some 2,086 songs received at least one mention, among them Cee Lo Green’s smash “Fuck You!” (tops with 187 mentions) and a United Parcel Service jingle.
The Pumpkins have received a grand total of two mentions over the four “Pazz & Jop” singles polls conducted since the band reformed in 2007, neither coming in the last 3 years.
