С басистами у Jane's Addiction вечная проблема: с 1985 года группа успела сменить пятерых, включая Маккейгана. При этом остальная часть состава не менялась вообще.
Самый первый басист команды, Эрик Эйвери (Eric Avery) дважды возвращался и дважды уходил снова - последний раз это случилось в марте, как раз перед пришествием в группу Маккейгана.
Маккейган покинул Guns N' Roses в конце 1990-х. С 2002 по 2008 год он играл в компании других бывших участников Guns N' Roses в проекте Velvet Revolver, а в прошлом году активно концертировал со своей командой Loaded. Судя по заявлениям солиста Jane's Addiction Перри Фаррелла (Perry Farrell), Маккейган снова сосредоточится на ней.
JANE’S ADDICTION–singer Perry Farrell, guitarist Dave Navarro, and drummer Stephen Perkins–and producer Rich Costey (Muse, Franz Ferdinand, Interpol) recently added TV on the Radio’s Dave Sitek to the creative team. Sitek, best known for his production work on TV on the Radio, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and the Foals, will be writing and playing bass on the new album.
The band—who wrote the rule book for alternative music and culture through a combination of genre-defying classic songs and a cinematic live experience–is recording their fourth studio album in Los Angeles, tentatively scheduled for a summer of 2011 release on Capitol Records.
“Dave, Steve and I are fully immersed in the process of making modern music,” says Perry Farrell. “It has been a great experience thus far, and the results have so much potential.”
“This process has been both inspiring and incredibly freeing,” says Dave Navarro. “The events over the last year have proven themselves to be a necessary part of the journey as they have led us to our current creative team and direction.”

Работающие над своим новым студийным альбомом Jane's Addiction обзавелись подмогой в лице участника нью-йоркской группы TV On The Radio Дэйва Ситека. Музыкант заменил в студии басиста Velvet Revolver Даффа МакКегена, покинувшего группу после кратковременного сотрудничества.
Ситек ангажирован исключительно для студийной работы. Вероятнее всего, что он не будет принимать участия в планируемом концертном туре в поддержку нового диска – кандидатом на замещение вакантной должности «в дороге» называется басист Крис Чейни, который уже работал с ветеранами альт-рока в процессе подготовки альбома «Strays» 2003-го года.
Что касается последователя «Strays», то информации о нем пока кот наплакал. Единственным комментарием фронтмена Jane's Addiction Перри Фаррелла стало заверение в том, что музыканты «полностью погружены в процесс создания новой актуальной музыки с большим потенциалом». Также известно, что продюсированием диска занимается Рич Кости, ранее сотрудничавший с Muse и Glasvegas.

Наварро: «Я очень рад тому, где мы находимся в музыкальном плане. Одна вещь, которую я понял и принял в отношении этой группы — всё получается так, как диктует время… Я сказал бы, что все изменения, через которые мы прошли, были необходимой частью процесса в этот раз. Это одно из самых приятных путешествий, которые у меня были за много-много лет, и результатом этого стало то, что я не беспокоился о графиках и не спешил с выпуском этого материала».
Перкинс: «Для меня важно не повторять то, что мы уже делали. Мы знаем, что можем записать рок-альбом с рок-риффами и большим барабаном. Я не хочу этого делать. Я хочу пойти дальше и создать звуковой лук, который вы могли бы переваривать слой за слоем. Это был хороший опыт сочинения и хорошие перемены».
Наварро: «Я ненавижу навешивать на нас ярлыки, приводя примеры того, на что похоже наше звучание. Это совершенно другое направление для Jane's Addiction... Но, как бы то ни было, наше звучание всё ещё очень похоже на Jane's Addiction».
Перкинс: «Это песни, которые отправляют вас в путешествие; песни, которые из мягких превращаются в жёсткие, затем в племенные, потом уходят в психоделию, после чего ударяются в металл, и всё это в рамках одной песни. Мы пытаемся работать с этим гибридом снова».

Ситек взялся за дело всерьёз: помимо игры на бас-гитаре он поучаствовал и в композиции и аранжировании всего альбома, так что есть основания предполагать, что в группе он задержится.

Album review: Jane’s Addiction – The Great Escape Artist is shocking
Jane’s Addiction more or less invented the alternative rock genre as the eighties gave way to the nineties, but didn’t stick around long enough to take advantage of what they’d created. Amid breakups, relapses, and reunions over the decades, the band is finally getting around to releasing its fourth album in October. Their first record all those years ago was titled Nothing’s Shocking. This one could be called This Is Shocking.
Those familiar with the ambitions of Perry Farrell, Dave Navarro, and Stephen Perkins won’t be surprised that Jane’s is breaking new ground on The Great Escape Artist. But those expecting the album to be along the lines of what a twenty-something year old rock franchise tends to crank out (most typically, a standard fare album as an excuse to tour) will be caught off guard by Escape Artist: all these years later, it finds the band as hungry as they are confident.
Navarro’s guitars swirl on “Splash A Little Water On It,” creating the kind of sonic textures only he can. The driving rhythm section on “Curiosity Kills” points to Jane’s eternal revolving door of bassists having become an asset, as TV on the Radio’s Dave Sitek takes over bass duties and teams up with Perkins to deliver results no less than thundering. Amid all of it, Farrell’s vocals soar across the sonic landscape, doing what he does best: telling stories of broken people. In fact one of the songs even employs that concept as its title.
There’s nothing on here which sounds all that much like “Jane Says” or “Been Caught Stealing,” but that’s a good thing, as self imitation rarely produces inspired results. Instead the band eagerly pushes itself into new territory, seemingly more interested in delivering another visceral gut punch to a once-again sagging rock landscape than in merely serving up a nostalgia trip. Of course there’s enough Jane’s DNA on this album that it works as the latter as well, if that’s what you came for.
But this is no veteran rock record. Rather than being one of those affairs in which longtime fans are merely relieved the band finally released something, The Great Escape Artist is going to catch some folks off guard. At a recent screening, a roomful of music journalists hears the album and cheerfully debates which new track is their favorite. Now that “End To The Lies” and “Irresistible Force” have hit the radio, the third single is anyone’s guess, as there are a number of candidates.
Despite the varying tempos, the album never really lets up in intensity. In fact, thanks to the driving nature of closing track “Words Right Out Of My Mouth” the album goes out with a bang. Its release date is October 18th. And if this somehow ends up being the final Jane’s Addiction record, or the last one for some time as has been the case with each of the last two, then the band is going out with a bang as well.
