Nine Inch Nails announce North American arena tour
First came the album announcement, then the first single, and now Nine Inch Nails give us the final piece in tonight’s holy trinity of music news with the announcement of a North American tour. In support of Hesitation Marks, the band has unveiled plans for a new arena tour called Tension.
According to NIN mastermind Trent Reznor, Tension will pick up where the band’s 2008 Lights in the Sky tour left off, adding , “This is the full-on NIN live experience realized as we never could before.”
The leg kicks off in St. Paul, MN in late September and runs through late November. Reznor will perform alongside Adrian Belew (King Crimson) and Josh Eustis (Telefon Tel Aviv), along with previous NIN collaborators Robin Finck, Alessandro Cortini and Ilan Rubin.
Adding to the anticipation? Explosions in the Sky and Godspeed You! Black Emperor will serve as support for the tour.

In the second show of Nine Inch Nails U.S./Canada “Tension 2013″ tour on Sept. 30th at Sprint Center in Kansas City, Trent Reznor gave a solo spotlight to new backup singer Sharlotte Gibson (Avenged Sevenfold, Whitney Houston, Rod Stewart) during the song “Even Deeper.” The solo spot features Gibson wailing and improvising over the NIN tune, reminiscent of Pink Floyd’s song ”The Great Gig in the Sky.” Gibson’s solo was greeted with loud applause from the audience. The revamped lineup also features backup singer Lisa Fischer (Rolling Stones) and veteran bassist Pino Palladino (The Who) who also played bass on several Hesitation Marks tracks.
Nine Inch Nails stage show and some song arrangements appear different than previous concerts on the tour. 6 songs from Hesitation Marks that have previously never been played live are also featured. Although the new musicians do not have the same aggressive stage presence as the regular NIN touring lineup, they do add different elements to the sound. Reznor is now concentrating primarily on singing and some keyboard playing with guitarist/bassist/keyboardist Josh Eustis now performing guitar and keyboard duties. The new lineup may not please fans of Nine Inch Nails traditional 5 piece lineup but it should make these new concerts unpredictable and unique.

“Recoiled” is a rambunctious alchemy, of magikal Coil sensibilities and hi-tech home circa 90’s mixing technique, all fused in the cave-like early studios of Danny Hyde / Peter Christopherson.
These were the unrestrained PRE- BIG studio- mix downs, of four songs which long time Coil admirer / collaborator Trent Reznor requested Coil to remix. Reznor sent over the original multi-tracks and DATs to Hyde / Christopherson, who independently mixed versions and then met to synch both creations, molding them into these master versions. ”Recoiled” includes a fuller, more opulent version of the track ‘Closer’, which eventually made it onto the opening credits to the movie “SE7EN“ (1995)
These 5 lengthy compositions are pre-Ableton / laptop generation type priest song creations, with the use of baby alarms and numerous wires to create bespoke effects. These legendary tracks were always rumoured to exist and, only the due diligence of a dedicated NIN forum who hunted them down, are released/unleashed for your listening pleasure. 4 of the tracks were released on the download-only “Uncoiled”. A bonus, previously unheard track from the same sessions closes the album. Jhonn Balance is also manifest on this gilded constellation.

In a recent Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything), Trent Reznor had a lot to discuss about the future of Nine Inch Nails:
Regarding the plans for a 2014 tour, Reznor said, “Here are some thoughts on touring: When we commit to a touring cycle, it usually is at least a year long, and can start to feel stale after X amount of time. What I’m doing this cycle is making each leg of the tour have its own identity. The festival run we did over the summer was very different from the Tension tour we just finished. We’re currently rehearsing with a new incarnation of the band for what’s ahead. This keeps things fresh from a musician’s perspective, but also keeps things interesting for fans in an era where every show ends up on YouTube. The setlist and presentation moving forward will be very different from what we just did. That’s part of the incentive behind releasing the Tension footage now. That was one very specific look at Nine Inch Nails in the Fall of 2013, that I wanted the whole world to be able to see (just like you can see the festival footage on YouTube, which was its own thing). Yes, we are planning to return to North America in 2014…”
When asked about a Fragile Reissue in 2014, Reznor simply teased, “It’s possible.”
Nine Inch Nails may have also shed Pino Palladino, Josh Eustis, Sharlotte Gibson, and Lisa Fischer due to Reznor’s response to the question, “Who’s in the band now?” “IR + AC + RF + TR” (Ilan Rubin, Alessandro Cortini, Robin Finck, and Trent Reznor)

In a recent interview with UltimateGuitar, Robin Finck, the current guitarist of Nine Inch Nails, revealed he is currently working on his first solo album, “I was in the throes of that when Trent called me for this tour and so I’m looking to get into that when this tour lands at some point next year. I’ve really been woodshedding on my own and the songs are born on piano or guitar and building them up from there. But I have yet to introduce them to any wall of noise just yet.”
Finck also discussed how he became involved with the Guns N’ Roses’ “Chinese Democracy” album: “I didn’t know Axl. I was no longer playing with NIN at the time and I had jumped on a tour with a touring show from Cirque du Soleil, which at the time was not everywhere in Las Vegas like it is now. It was a North American tour under a blue and yellow big top (tent). What I’m telling you now is after this all happened. Axl had come to simply see the circus (laughs) and he and I had never met and he didn’t know I was there. One of the guys Axl was with in the grandstands pointed and said (in hushed excited voice), ‘Axl, you see that guitar player down there? That’s Robin from Nine Inch Nails.’”
“Axl was telling me this after the fact. And he just kind of scratched his head and was sitting there thinking, ‘What is he doing here?’ Hah hah hah. At that time Axl was no longer playing with Slash but the rest of the original guys were still together. I was in my Oakwood apartment with the rest of the circus. This was before cellphones and I had the curly-cabled telephone hanging on the wall in the kitchen. It rang and someone said they were a representative of Axl Rose who wished to speak to me – ‘Would I be at the number in 15 minutes?’”

Trent Reznor hinted in a new interview with Rolling Stone that Nine Inch Nails’ followup to last year’s Hesitation Marks could be coming sooner than people thought
“We’re leaving to go to tour mid-to-late February, in Australia with Queens [of the Stone Age]. We’ve got dates booked through the end of the summer. A lot of touring ahead. Just started on a new product. Can’t tell you what it is yet. It will take place while touring. New music maybe this fall. Every spare second, and even seconds that aren’t spare, are trying to wrangle this new creation into shape.”

Американская группа Nine Inch Nails отменила концерты в России, запланированные на июнь 2014 года. Об этом сообщается в пресс-релизе PMI, компании-организатора петербургского выступления группы, поступившем в «Ленту.ру».
Помимо концертов в Ледовом дворце Санкт-Петербурга (13 июня) и клубе Stadium Live в Москве (15 июня), коллектив Трента Резнора отказался от выступлений в Киеве (17 июня) и в Будапеште (19 июня). Причины отмены не называются.
Информация об отмене выступлений также размещена на странице в Facebook компании SAV Entertainment. Там же сообщается, что никаких дополнительных комментариев у организаторов концертов нет, а более подробную информацию можно обнаружить на официальных ресурсах группы. При этом на момент написания заметки в гастрольном графике на официальном сайте NIN шоу в Москве, Санкт-Петербурге, Киеве и Будапеште все еще упоминались.
Тем не менее, информация об отмене выступлений была подтверждена на странице NIN в Facebook. В качестве причины там указываются сложности с согласованием графика тура.
В августе 2013 года группа Nine Inch Nails выпустила восьмой студийный альбом «Hesitation Marks», в поддержку которого и был организован концертный тур. Ранее Резнор уже привозил свой проект в Россию — летом 2007 года NIN дали концерты в Москве и Санкт-Петербурге.

Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor recently gave an interview to New Zealand's 3 News (via AntiQuiet). Along with discussing the in-process reissue of 1999's The Fragile, Reznor offered further commentary on his ill-fated, cut-off Grammys performance alongside Queens of the Stone Age, Dave Grohl, and Fleetwood Mac's Lindsey Buckingham.
Reznor explained his and Josh Homme's rationale behind performing at the Grammys at all. When asked if he would ever considered returning, his response was pointed:
No, it was an utter waste of time. And I'll speak for a second on this. When this came up as an option, 'Hey, the Grammys would like you to play', you know, quite frankly it was flattering. I'm not a fan of the Grammys, as I've vocally expressed in the past, I don't think I've ever sat through an entire broadcast. I know I've never attended one.
But the way my head works is, to try to approach it from, 'Okay, if we did do it, what could be the upside?' And Josh [Homme, Queens of the Stone Age] and I spent a long time talking about the pros and cons. You know, 'Do we want to be on a shit show on TV? No, not really. Do we want to be affiliated with the Grammys? No, not really. Would we like to reach a large audience and actually do something with integrity on our terms? Well, yeah. Let's roll the dice and go into it with the best intentions, with a performance we think is worthy and might - you know - stand out from the crowd. Or it might not!' But what we weren't expecting was that level of insult [laughter]. In fact we walked off stage and I thought, 'Hey, that actually went pretty well', and I look at my collaborator Rob Sheridan, who I run into, and he's like, 'Oh my god man, you won't believe what they just did', and... 'What?' 'They cut this thing off in the middle and put a Delta commercial on'. 'What?' We had no idea.
You know, and it was just... I can look now and say I should have expected something like that, you know? But, more than anything it was just insulting. I invite my friend Lindsey Buckingham to come up on stage and it's just 'You know what, you've invited me into this place, fuck you. Fuck you guys', you know? So, lesson learned. And the other thing is if we hadn't have done it, I'd be thinking, 'Well, what would have happened it we would have done it?' You know. So I don't regret that we did it, but would I ever - in any situation - ever consider possibly patronizing that event in any form? Absolutely not. A Grammys executive apologized to Reznor last month, noting, "I’m sorry he was upset.. I did tell them we’d take it as long as we could."
Reznor also told 3 News that he is currently toying with different ideas for an upcoming reissue of The Fragile. He said, "I want to make sure I get it right. You know, we've mixed everything in surround, it sounds amazing, we have a great package ready to go. I just stumbled across 40-or-so demos that are from that era that didn't turn into songs, that range from sound effects to full-fledged pieces of music, and I kind of feel like–something should happen with that. He added, "I just haven't had a chance to be in a calm place where I can think it through completely and make that decision."

Recoiled is a semi-official remix EP credited to Coil and Nine Inch Nails. It is the commercial and physical release of selected tracks from the Uncoiled download-only remix compilation. It was released on February 24, 2014 on Cold Spring Records and it was made available on CD, vinyl and limited edition colored vinyl.
The tracks are outtakes from the remix sessions for Fixed, Closer To God and Further Down The Spiral. They were created by members of Coil, along with Danny Hyde. Recoiled omits the tracks from Uncoiled that could be viewed as redundant and also adds an extra remix "Eraser (Baby Alarm Remix)" that was not included on Uncoiled.
