JOHN FRUSCIANTE TALKS PRODUCING HIP-HOP ALBUM, SET FOR RELEASE IN JANUARY

Since he left the Red Hot Chili Peppers in 2008, John Frusciante has been relatively silent, occasionally releasing solo experimental electronic albums. However, in July, Frusciante called his latest project the “funnest musical collaboration I’ve ever had with anybody in my life.” Frusciante has produced the new album of Los Angeles hip-hop artists Black Knights, Medieval Chamber, set for release on January 14, 2014.

Frusciante commented on his production of the hip-hop album, making the following statement in a press release: “The great freedom I’ve found in doing hip-hop is that as long as the beat is hard and something that rappers will respond to creatively, the music can be literally any style of music you want. On any given song I can end up chopping up classic music or rock music or melodies based in free jazz ideas. I’ve felt more free doing this album than I have doing anything else.”
The project came about after the Black Knights, a Wu-Tang Clan affiliate, met John Frusciante through their mutual friend, Wu-Tang’s RZA. Since the meeting, the relationship between Frusciante and the rap duo flourished. In July, Frusciante stated that for the previous six months, he had only been making hip-hop. He stated that hip-hop is “the form of music where [he] can be completely free,” and that he would never be in a rock band because of the freedom of technology.

Black Knights member Rugged Monk said of Frusciante: “John brings the music and the intelligence side to it. This is his first go-round as far as doing hip-hop, but John Frusciante is a very musical guy.
