Massive Attack figurehead Robert ’3D’ Del Naja has turned his attention to The Congo on a new 12″, strictly limited to 300 copies
This time last year, Del Naja inaugurated his Battle Box project – a new outlet intended to “fuse music, art and discourse across one-off live events, exhibitions and exclusive vinyl releases.” Its first drop was the Battle Box 001 12″, released in association with The Vinyl Factory, which featured a new 3D/Guy Garvey collaboration plus a Guy Andrews remix on the flip.
Today sees the release of Battle Box 002, titled 3D On Jupiter. The new disc sees Del Naja on an Afrocentric tip, remixing Congolese musician and Okwess International lynchpin Jupiter Bokonjdi. As Del Naja outlines below, the record takes inspiration from his stint with Damon Albarn’s Africa Express project:
”In 2007 I went to the Congo with Africa Express. I was lucky to hang out and listen to some pretty amazing musicians, Jupiter among them.
“This track is built with an unknown modular synth from Munich, a Moog and a Vermona drum machine, with help from Euan Dickinson and Tim Goldsworthy. And mixes by Bruno Ellingham. I wanted to mirror the energy and message in the song without complicating it. The b-side is a more relaxed and melodic using a Prophet 5 and a jupiter 8.
It is the second release on the Battle Box label, which is made and distributed through The Vinyl Factory. Paul Insect has designed the covers and label art. Everything is screenprinted and limited in number.”

Robert Del Naja and The Vinyl Factory to release book documenting visual history of Massive Attack
Massive Attack‘s output has always made overtures to the eye as well as the ear.
Masterminded by graffiti artist turned musician Robert Del Naja – aka band lynchpin 3D – the crew’s artwork has always been a vital part of their appeal: from graffiti and stencil work (Blue Lines) through cyber-enhanced gothic (Mezzanine) to dystopian sloganeering (100th Window), they’ve continued to cultivate a distinctive and compelling aesthetic.
A new project from The Vinyl Factory is now set to cast a spotlight onto the band’s visual output. 3D and the art of Massive Attack, curated and compiled by Del Naja, is the first book to document and analyse the band’s artwork. As well as Del Naja’s own pieces, the 400-page book features collaborations with the likes of Tom Hingston, Nick Knight and, most recently, Adam Curtis, plus a host of ephemera plucked from Del Naja’s personal archive.
A special limited edition ‘box set’ version of the book has also been announced, boasting alternative cover artwork and a supplementary 12″ of a previously unreleased Del Naja track. The edition will also come with an exclusive print by Del Naja, and will be signed by the artist.
The press release for the book digs out an interesting snippet from Banksy, which reads as follows:
“When I was about ten years old, a kid called 3D was painting the streets hard. 3D quit painting and formed the band Massive Attack, which may have been a good thing for him but was a big loss for the city.”
The limited edition box set is available to pre-order now over at The Vinyl Factory. The regular edition, meanwhile, will be available on October 28.
