First Spin: Listen to Puscifer's 'Conditions' LP
Maynard James Keenan hit the studio tucked into his wine cellar hard this year and emerged with Conditions of My Parole, Puscifer’s second full studio album, which is available exclusively on SPIN.com a week before its official October 18-th release.
"Musically, it's like Twin Peaks in the desert," Keenan tells SPIN of the LP, which was inspired by the vast, snake-infested outback surrounding his Northern Arizona vineyards. “You've got stories of ghosts and aliens, plus Republicans, Democrats, conservatives, liberals, vineyards, ranches, horses. It's hostile territory: You've got scorpions, black widows, brown recluse, javelina, rattlesnakes... and hippies."
With 16 musicians listed in the liner notes, Conditions of My Parole was made with the assistance of Puscifer’s biggest posse yet. New contributors include ex-Mars Volta drummer Jon Theodor, L.A. songwriter Juliette Commagere, ASHES dIVIDE drummer Jeff Friedl and bassist Matt McJunkins, and Bat for Lashes percussionist Sarah Jones. There’s even room for some cello plucks from Keenan’s son Devo.
Puscifer kick off their U.S. tour in November, and full details are available on the band's Facebook page.

Maynard James Keenan Talks Puscifer, Dirty Words, and How the Band 311 Ruins His Wine
October 18-th, 2011
Firstly, Maynard talks briefly about the release of the new Puscifer album Conditions of My Parole (which should be out now!).
When asked about Tool he mentioned:
- How many times a day does someone ask you about a new Tool record?
- At least 20… Wait, what time is it? 22. Twenty-two times. For most people, where I started was there. Most people assume the success of anything I do is based on Tool, when they don’t realize that I was successful at things long before Tool. Tool didn’t get me in Westpoint, Tool didn’t get me distinguished graduate from basic training, Tool didn’t get me on the student council, and Tool didn’t get me my 12 varsity letters. But the public eye assumes that’s the thing I should be doing. I just hold my tongue and do what I do.

Butcher, Spiraleyes and More: an interview with Camella Grace
Ray Carney has recently interviewed Camella Grace (Adam’s wife) and she talks about many things, including Spiral Eyes, Butcher and working on the videos for the Tool live shows.
First and foremost this album has a proper original feel to it, spit and polished it erupts at times, and then pulls back to give you a chance to recover, this is sometimes called a game of cat and mouse. The artwork, as should be expected from the artists involved, provokes hesitation in me. It is confrontational, but also very serene, very matter of fact, calming, and accepting.
Black Dahlia >>
This is the longest track to be found on Auricle. It is a very emotional song involving beautiful pianos and powerful lyrics that are directed at a murder, of which “Black Dahlia” is the victim.
“Black Dahlia” (Elizabeth Short) was murdered, cut in half and mutilated, and found on January 15, 1947 in Hollywood where she was visiting at the time.
The murder was never solved, but certain aspects of her life and death contribute to Los Angeles’ reputation as a failed, broken, sick excuse for the American Dream.
In a particular sense, the explication of this song might lead one to believe it is also a metaphor for the dreams of individuals who venture to that altar in search of the grail of fame and fortune in the entertainment industry.
Elements of Turandot >>
Again, beautiful sounds grace us with this song, but it stands out for its juxtaposition of the song with faint whispers, and at a few points coincide with the lyrics being sung. There is a video included on the CD for this track. It is, again, directed by Camella Grace. Given her experience in film, she sets a beautiful watermark for her future efforts with this. I am not familiar with the opera by the title Turandot but it would stand to reason this song relates to it.
Cold >>
This track is not listed on the back of the album, nor are the lyrics included (the other songs do have their lyrics included); the credits are, however, included in the liner notes. A long instrumental build up for about the first five minutes of the song deliver us to a fitful end of the album. The lyrical focus seems to be on a death, possibly the Black Dahlia murder from the first track. Cold also utilizes justaposition, this time between the long instrumental march to the lyrical segment that ends it, as well as soft-sung lyrics broken up by high, long-held banshee wails (okay, anachronistic banshee wails).

In early 2005, Butcher headed to the desert and went into the studio with their good friend and producer, Scott Reeder (Kyuss, Unida) to record their first album entitled Auricle. The first release from Los Angeles-based band, BUTCHER is now available . Over the past couple of years, Butcher (Camella Grace, Sasha Popovic & Scott Reeder) has played several well-received shows in the Los Angeles area, but due to busy schedules and other factors, the project as originally envisioned by Sasha and Camella was never fully realized – that is until now, and with the addition of Scott Reeder (who engineered and co-produced "Auricle" ), the band is finally making the musical statement that was their initial intention. For their debut LP, the band sought artistic contributions from several musicians of diverse backgrounds, and the result makes for a sonic odyssey without bounds. This album is an absolute masterpiece. Beautiful in its stunningly ambient and dark atmosphere.

"Butcher is a progressive rock band that was formed in North Hollywood in 2001 by Camella Grace and Sasha Popovic. Combining Camella's powerful yet ethereal vocals with their shared love of heavy music and monster riffs, they created the unique sound that is Butcher.
In early 2005, Butcher headed to the California desert and went into the studio with their good friend and producer, Scott Reeder (Kyuss, Unida) to record their first album entitled Auricle. The recording process spanned several months and combined input from several musician friends including Scott Reeder, Ben Sherazi (Lotus Eater), Vince DeFranco and Blair MacKenzie Blake and Phillip Trujeque. Scott Reeder officially joined the band on bass after the recording of "Auricle" was completed. In October 2006 the band announced they were looking for a new bass player since Scott Reeder couldn't balance a 180 mile round trip to practice and back..."

Autumn brings us the fall equinox along with the darkening of days and an appropriately timed Butcher show. I don't like art spoon-fed or obvious especially when it comes to my heavier audio appetites. Ditto for Butcher, fronted by avant-photographer-artiste Camella Grace (http://www.spiraleyes.com) and powered by the primal thunderism of drummer Sasha Popovic. Infiltrating the duo with his spatial guitar work is Phil Trujeque along with new bassist Joe Nagy. "Run On Water" is a teeth grinder, played on days when I've just had it with the struggle of all things mundane and need some fucking backup. Often ferocious yet filled with feminine power, Camella can wail like an aqueous siren or spit out a blistering metaphorical tirade ("Black Dahlia"). Don your cosmic armor and join her Joan of Arc-esque vocal crusade that simultaneously strokes a coiled serpent while weilding a deadly, beautiful sword. There will be little reprieve when these expressions blissfully shimmer around your aura and then relentlessly demand access into your skull. Veins of Butcher's influences do surface in the deep: brilliant stoner psychedelia a la Kyuss, mammoth Melvins bottom end and the sparse atmospherics of an experimental Dead Can Dance. But the band takes these mercurial elements and transmutes them into their own alchemical gold. And you don't get no gold without the fire, my friends, which is why you need to experience them live…now.
