After 26 years of blistering sludge rock, California’s The Melvins have finally cracked the pop music charts this week by selling just over 2,800 copies of their new album. “We lost it,” said lead singer and guitarist Buzz Osborne. “And then had a snack.” The new album, “The Bride Screamed Murder,” debuted at number 200 on Billboard’s Top 200 Chart. The chart appearance was a nice consolation for the band, but doesn’t exactly bode well for the music industry. Five years ago Billboard cut the minimum chart threshold of U.S. album sales in half (from 5,000 to 2,500) due to tanking record sales. “It doesn’t look good,” Osborne said about the biz. “Pretty soon if you just talk about putting a record out it will chart in the top 200.” With Kurt Cobain as one of their biggest fans, The Melvins were hugely influential to the ‘grunge rock’ scene that came out of the Pacific Northwest in the ‘90s. Cobain even joined them on their 1993 album “Houdini.” “Working with Cobain was a stone groove,” Osborne said. “And then it was over forever. He should have just continued to hang with us.” The band will continue to celebrate their newfound success at the Bonnaroo festival this weekend. “I plan on getting good and ripped and then buying brew for a bunch of kids in the parking lot.” <\/u><\/a>
