True to his word, the in-progress, psychedelic-leaning Smashing Pumpkins album, Teargarden by Kaleidyscope, will be released one track at a time, as free downloads, starting in late October. “No strings attached, no e-mail address need be given, no fees, nothing, totally free,” he says. “A 44-song free-for-all!” Even when it will be available physically, the format will be 11 EPs with four tracks each. “I thought it would emphasize that each song is really important to me,” he says, “and also try to get myself up to the speed of a world that is absolutely devouring information.”
Corgan says he wasn’t inspired by any similar approaches, like Radiohead’s recent move to put out singles and one album online. “I want no limitations on what I can, and will do,” he says. “I think the size and shape of the traditional album is just morphing into something much more in the moment. Four songs at a time will mean I can give my heart over to the music fully without giving away my now happy life.”
Although Corgan says he already written 53 songs, he won’t say whether he’ll be recording them with the latest edition of the Pumpkin or reveal any song titles. “The first four songs are speaking a new language to me, rooted in the psychedelic music I love but still sounding quite modern and like the Pumpkins I long to hear,” he allows. He’s also hoping to have the first track available just after Halloween.
Can Corgan, who parted ways with Warner Bros. last year, afford to give music away for free? “I can’t afford it!!” he says. “But I would rather be free than rich. The [major] labels are dead ghosts walking, and they know it. They never should have left this mystic free, because I am way more of a pied piper than they could ever fathom.”

"When we were playing the song on the Spirits tour, it was just acoustic plus mandolin and violin, which I really liked because of its bluegrass vibe.
"In the studio it's totally changed and now sounds like some kind of gothic Indian orchestra is playing the song with the same original guitar part. I'm pretty surprised by how it has turned out to be so psychedelic - I didn't expect that but guess it is just where my head is at right now."

Billy Corgan has always done things a little bit differently. As the leader of Smashing Pumpkins, he was a vanguard for the alternative rock movement in the 1990s. Even as the notion of "alternative" shape-shifts into "indie," Corgan has, indeed remained independent to the core. He was one of the first artists to demonstrate that you could be signed to a major label and still keep not only your integrity but also control of your art -- even when his own band was spiraling out of control, the subject of much public drama and perhaps even some sensationalism.
Now, with 19-year-old Mike Byrne on the skins, Corgan is the last man standing from the original group. Sitting in the Spinner offices, he offers us a glimpse at Smashing Pumpkins 3.0, coinciding with the announcement that the band plans to roll out 44 songs, one at a time, over the next few years for free. The tracks will form the basis for the new Smashing Pumpkins album, 'Teargarden by Kaleidyscope,' which will eventually be released as 11 four-song EPs.
All this from a band that released an entire album for free ('Machina II') back in 2000, before it became hip to do so. If history is any indication, maybe every band will start releasing massive amounts of four-song EPs. Then again, that could end up just being a Smashing Pumpkins thing.
Why are you releasing the 44 songs of 'Teargarden by Kaleidyscope' for free?
I've never been comfortable with the idea that you work for a couple of years just to come up with a pile of 12 songs and that becomes the album. What I like about the idea of recording the songs one at a time is I'm always in the moment with the song. I'm hoping it will raise the quality of the songs that I release so that every song is important to me. Hopefully the audience will feel that way too.
It's going to take a while for the record business to find its new bearings. In the meantime, it keeps acting like it's the old record business, which I think really works against the artistic aspect of putting out music. I thought I would walk around all of that, make the songs available for free and I figured out a way that I could feel invested. I figure it's going to take three years and I'm always putting out something I feel excited about, and then I'm also getting some level of feedback from the audience about what they're actually connecting with.
Releasing 'Machina II' for free seemed like a middle finger to your record label, Virgin. Was that what you intended?
I was very frustrated in 2000 when we wanted to put out 'Machina II.' We were out of our record deal and the label had absolutely no interest, even though 'Machina' had sold pretty well. They wanted nothing to do with me or us, so rather than just have all this music sit in a box somewhere, we decided just to put it out. It was a very exciting time because it was maybe an early hint at what we're in now. All artists are kind of in this immediacy where a grainy YouTube video is something that is just as important as a $500,000 video. If it connects with people, it connects. Back then it was sort of a point of revenge. Little did I know that it was a forbearance of things to come.
Do you regret breaking up Smashing Pumpkins in 2000?
Breaking up the band was a mistake because I think it broke trust with the audience. You had an audience that was very invested in that idea -- whether they were invested in the people or the idea or the songs, I don't know. Like a relationship that you break off from and then try to pick back up, it's never quite the same. It doesn't mean it can't be as good, but it has to be different. That beautiful original feeling got lost in the interim of being away. If we had said, "We just went away for seven years," it would have been similar, but somehow breaking up, there's a violence to it.
Many fans said things like, "You reformed Smashing Pumpkins but really it's just in name." Do you think that's a valid criticism?
Anything is a fair criticism. The question I would ask is, "Do I have the right to do it?" Based upon what I've seen since reforming the band, I do have the right. If I felt I didn't, I would sit here honestly and say, "Nah, I probably should've just left it alone." I've been making music with the intention of connecting with an audience for 20 years now, so at the end of the day I have to be accountable to me in that way. I can't not do what I believe in because somebody else doesn't feel the same way I do about it.
Your new drummer, Mike Byrne, is 19 years old. Are you going to let him drink backstage?
You know what's funny? I don't even know if he drinks. I've never seen him drink.
What was the drummer audition process like?
We got over 1,000 submissions. Most people sent in a little bio, maybe a picture and then a YouTube link. We had to go through all these submissions and they kind of wound down to a pile. There were people from really great bands that were interested, and so I'm looking at all these great drummers and I get to this one. My friend is loading up the YouTube clip and the kid is 19 years old. My first thought was "No way!" Press play and it's him just going off at some music store. He's not even playing a beat, he's just going off. I thought, "Wow, this kid is really something."
Then we called him down for an audition. He was probably the seventh drummer that I had seen that day. I looked at him and I thought this kid looks really young -- he looks like the little kid. He was super nervous. I had a very similar feeling the first time with him that I had the first time I played with Jimmy Chamberlin. There's just something about playing with a great drummer that just gives you a chill. The next thing you know, I'm on the phone with his parents telling them that I'm actually thinking about hiring him.
Not to cut him out of the process, but I didn't want it to be him walking into the living room going, "Mom and dad, Billy wants to hire me for the Smashing Pumpkins." I wanted them to understand that it was a legitimate thing, that he wasn't in some kind of fantasy. He's a really great person, a fantastic musician. I love his attitude. Only certain drummers can play like that at such a young age. The fact that he's playing like this at 19 makes me wonder where he's going to be at in five years.
The great thing is that he grew up listening to the Pumpkins and loves Jimmy's playing, so there's no weird thing there. For him, he completely understands what he's being asked to do because he understands where the band has come from. It feels like this was the way everything was meant to happen.
What has surprised you most about your career?
If you went back in a time machine to 1993, recording 'Siamese Dream,' somebody could say "This is what's going to happen" and I would never have believed it. I would never have believed all the bad things, I would never have believed many of the good things. If I could go back in a time machine and talk to me back then, the thing would surprise him is that at some point I was willing to walk away from being servile to success.
That's a difficult question as an artist because art really is about serving. You want to communicate but there was something about the process of making others happy that somehow was making me feel unhappy. It made me crazy, but I was good at it. It's like you're being rewarded for something that hurts you, but yet everybody is telling you it's a good thing. Then you try to pull that energy back into yourself, you try to make it more about you, and then suddenly you're not making people happy. You're making yourself happy but now that's another form of unhappiness because now you're making other people unhappy. It's taken a long time to get to a place of being OK with it all.
I don't get into the grandiose, "If only one person is touched by it ..." I want people to hear what I'm doing but I think I only go so far. It won't be at the expense of my life, my health, my sanity. If that makes me sort of just an okay artist, well then, I can live with that.
Breaking up the band was a mistake because I think it broke trust with the audience.

I can honestly say that my intention is to write a book that touches deeply on my life in a way that very few people know about, and I am excited by that, but also a bit intimidated. If you have ever wondered how I came to be so mercurial, reactionary, silly, or spiritually open, then this book will provide insight into that. It will be a huge undertaking for me, and might require at times for me to focus more on writing the book than on these posts, and also make choices about when to work on music full-time.

AOL’s Spinner.com today shares two segments of video from its December 4 interview with Smashing Pumpkins leader Billy Corgan. PowerPoint-like title cards, a generic soundtrack, and the stark white backdrop behind Corgan are all disconcerting, but the questions are good. Two transcribed portions follow.
From the first segment:
Spinner title card: Why did you announce the return of Smashing Pumpkins on the day your solo album was released?
Corgan: I started having conversations with Jimmy Chamberlin when he was working on his solo record and I was working on my solo record. We talked about the idea of, depending of how the cycles went on those albums, that we wanted to start working on the Pumpkins again, and then we talked invariably about the other former members. It wasn’t really so much planned out as it was sort of an idea, like, “Okay, this is going to happen, so let’s start pointing in that direction.” Part of the reason that I took the full-page ad out announcing that I was going to try to put the band back together was because I didn’t want to go around the world on my solo record and just talk about the Pumpkins as a ghost — I wanted to sort of put it back in, like, okay, here it is again. I wanted to create the proper context that I was in, which was “I’m doing this now, but I’m headed back this way.” It was very interesting to see people’s reactions, because it put a weird energy into the solo touring. Some people were really mad. I thought they’d be excited, but they didn’t want to wait — they were like, “Make it happen now.”
From the second:
Spinner title card: Do you think the media have been fair to you and Smashing Pumpkins over the years?
Corgan: Probably not, but at this point I think it kind of doesn’t matter anymore, because enough things have happened where it exists on its own oxygen. When you’re young, you need people’s approval, you need somebody’s positive reinforcement, whether it’s your parents or it’s the indie mag or whatever. Then you just reach a point where you’re grown up and you don’t need it — it’s nice, but you don’t need it.
I’m responsible in the sense that I’ve created a lot of difficult questions about why I do what I do and what the point is — and none of them are easy, they’re not like, “Oh, he’s like this,” or “He’s like that.” The band was very alternative, and yet at the same time we were very popular. We sold lots of records, but we did things that were completely the opposite of what you were supposed to do to sell records. Always a contradiction, always playing with the energies. You know, in rock and roll, people like really simple stories: “Genius rolls out of bed, shoots heroin, writes a great song — perfect!” Being sober, articulate, shadowy, confusing, religious…these are all, like, “What?” I get why that’s not an easy sell, but I think the work is there.
Non-charitable auctions of Pumpkins’ memorabilia begin
December 28th, 2009
An acoustic guitar used by Billy Corgan and three several backstage passes are being offered via eBay in what appear to be the first ordinary operations of the Smashing Pumpkins’ “memorabilia division” since its formation was announced in April. (In October, two special auctions were conducted through the same eBay account to defray medical expenses for a friend of the band.)
A text notice accompanying each listing (example) reads in part:
The Smashing Pumpkins are auctioning off old instruments, gear, tour merchandise, and other artifacts found in the band’s archives and warehouse. We will be offering very rare and one-of-a-kind items.

Here is an excerpt in which Corgan talks about political discourse in contemporary America:
[Billy Corgan:] Whoever the people are in charge of this world, they do an interesting thing – they run out voices to make you think you’re being heard, understood, or recognized. And it’s not just for ratings, like Glenn Beck – it’s a way to control the debate. If you say to me, “Hey! There are little green men in my backyard!” I can go, “Hey! I’ve seen ‘em, too!” So there’s nothing to fight if I’m already agreeing with you. There’s only one problem – [Beck] is on the network that helps create part of the scenario that we’re in. He’s not an “independent voice.” Independent voices don’t take commercial breaks.
[Illinois Entertainer]: It’s kinda like that scene in "They Live," where Rowdy Roddy Piper finally puts on the sunglasses and sees the “Consume!” ads everywhere.
BC: But the funny thing is, it’s not even subliminal anymore. Whatever that is, you don’t have to put on the sunglasses – it’s right in front of your face. We are living in an age of overt propaganda – it’s not even hidden anymore. Watch a political debate, and the pundits won’t debate the veracity of what’s being said – they’ll debate how well the person manipulated their weaknesses to appear as strengths. They’ll basically give points for, “Well, I know he’s totally full of shit. But he did a good job of convincing us that he isn’t!” If you went back to [Walter] Cronkite days, they weren’t saying that stuff.

If it sounds like Corgan is down on the record industry, that’s because he is. One of the reasons he plans on releasing 44 new Smashing Pumpkins songs for free online is to avoid having to deal with record industry drama.

Corgan has so far released two songs off the “Teargarden By Kaleidyscope” project and said he just completed the sixth song. He expects to release some of the new music over the next few weeks.
“I think a song at a time over the course of three to four years makes sense,” Corgan said. “I figured this was the best way to skip all that drama. All that drama is really boring.”
Surprisingly, Corgan isn’t as bored with the tabloid drama that occasionally surrounds his life.
“The stuff that I’ve seen doesn’t have any bearing to the reality that I’m in,” said Corgan, who tabloids have recently linked to pop star Jessica Simpson. “It’s like being in a cartoon. It has nothing to do with what’s really going on or how I feel.”
When asked about his studio collaboration with Simpson last month, the Glendale Heights-native said it was for her upcoming VH1 reality show, “The Price of Beauty.”
“She asked me to help her out on the theme song for her new TV show,” Corgan said. “[The show] has an interesting concept. She goes around the world to show how different people perceive beauty. In some cultures, bigger is better. In some, smaller is better. It’s interesting.”
“I ended up writing part of [the theme song]. It has a little bit of an alternative rock edge, but it’s still very pop-y.”
What’s next for Corgan -- besides recording 38 more Pumpkins songs?
“I just signed a deal to write my memoir,” Corgan responded. “It’s supposed to come out at the end of next year. It’s a spiritual memoir about life from a spiritual perspective – not from a media or celeb perspective.”

Billy Corgan put his Gold Coast condominum on the market back in September 2008. The first listing price was $5.5 million.
He purchased the originally six-room condo for $2.95 million in 2002 and renovated it into a full-fledged celeb pad. Corgan's crib is complete with two large bedrooms, two and a half bathrooms, a copious amount of wood burning fire places (four to be exact), walnut parquet floors, a reception room, an oak paneled living room, a library and of course a parking space--which is quite luxurious to have in the realm of nightmare parking in the Gold Coast area.
The poor pumpkin may see the asking price to continue to decline. $3.55 million for a two-bedroom? BC may have always been egotistical, but does he really think some crazed fan is going to pay extra just to boast he lives in Billy Corgan's old pad?
Corgan's creative well dried up years ago, and unfortunately for him--so did his fans. I think Billy ol' boy is going to need a lot more than a smashing real estate agent to sell his vintage gem.

Твою проблему легко решить. Просто не слушай новых песен, пока не выйдет EP. А ещё лучше подожди пока выйдет бокс-сет со всеми 44 песнями, тогда ты сможешь напереключаться вволю!

While scurrying around our various environs searching for the new print edition of Rolling Stone containing a feature on Billy Corgan (an online preview of which has been posted today to RollingStone.com), we nabbed a copy of the March issue of Spin that has Courtney Love on the cover. Despite their collaboration for Hole’s forthcoming album Nobody’s Daughter, the magazine reports (on page 49) that Corgan and Love are on the outs, at least for now:
Linda Perry prodded [Nobody's Daughter] into existence back in 2006, when [Perry and Love] recorded early versions of this material for a solo disc, which Love says she abandoned because “We didn’t create a band, and I don’t function well without a band.”
Now Perry refuses to comment, and Corgan, via e-mail, would only say, “After almost 20 years of friendship, I have decided to break all ties to Courtney. I don’t want anything to do with her or her new record.”
“Billy’s being a douche, but he’ll stop,” Love says through mouthfuls of cupcake. “It’s like clockwork.”

Unless you count what he’s done to his career, Billy Corgan has never attempted suicide. Until recently, there were plenty of mornings when he’d wake up to a stark choice: “Go eat breakfast, or go kill yourself.”
When Rolling Stone’s Brian Hiatt met with Corgan in Los Angeles in early February, the Smashing Pumpkins founder had a lot to say about a very rough 10 years. “There’s a lot of days where you feel forgotten,” Corgan says at one point. In a soul-baring, wide-ranging interview, Corgan discusses the idiosyncratic spiritual beliefs that saved him from suicidal depression (including his association with a vintage hippie cult called Source Family); opens up for the first time about his 2009 split with drummer Jimmy Chamberlin (Corgan says he fired him); reveals his father’s heroin addiction (his dad was arrested two years ago with a needle still in his arm); says that he “loves” Jessica Simpson; and much more. Corgan on His Critics:
“Do I belong in the conversation about the best artists in the world? My answer is yes, I do,” he says. “I’ve been too productive for too long, and despite what anybody wants to strip away from me, I am influential. I am. So all the Pitchforks in the world can try to strip me of every ounce of dignity, but I belong.”
On the Pumpkins’ Breakup:
“Rather than break up the band, what I should have done is chuck James [Iha] out,” Corgan says. “I should have just said to Jimmy [Chamberlin], ‘You go to rehab, and we’ll continue, and James, get the fuck out of here.’ Instead, I fell on my sword for James, for what I thought was a friend.”
On His Spiritual Beliefs:
Corgan subscribes to the fashionable idea that we’re building to a cataclysm, or at least a major vibrational shift, in 2012; he wonders what was really in the H1N1 vaccine; he fears that the United States is headed toward a Soviet Union-style economic collapse… But when pressed on details, he backs off: “I don’t want to be a dead hero,” he says.
On “Loving” Jessica Simpson:
“If I go, ‘Oh, we’re just friends,’ then it’s like, ‘Did they go out, did he dump her or she dump him, what happened?’ It has nothing to do with any of that. Sometimes people just like being around each other, and good things come out of that. My goal in life is to love whoever I think is worth loving, and I think if people knew her like I knew her, they would love her like I do. It’s really simple.”

One of the more-anticipated portions of Brian Hiatt’s sprawling profile of Billy Corgan in the latest issue of Rolling Stone was the promise of details regarding the surprising departure of Jimmy Chamberlin from the Smashing Pumpkins.
Scant details were provided at the time, beyond the assertion from the Chamberlin camp that “there is no drama, bad blood, or anything else but a full committment to music,” leading many fans to believe that the parting was mostly amicable and that Jimmy was possibly no longer willing to devote the same time and energy into the Smashing Pumpkins that bandleader Billy Corgan was.
As time passed, it became clear that the former “musical soul mates” may not have parted on as good of terms as the two parties may have stated publicly, but no details have emerged until now. Hiatt portrays two very disparate accounts of the separation:
Billy:
Chamberlin is sober now, but Corgan is convinced that his character hasn’t changed, that he is fundamentally “unhealthy.” “Jimmy is a destructive human being, and people who are destructive break things,” Corgan says. “I don’t see me reaching the highest levels of my creativity if I’m unhealthy and if I have unhealthy people around me.[...]”
After Corgan told Chamberlin he was out, the drummer “unloaded” on Corgan, unleashing 20 years worth of pent-up insults. “So I was like, ‘Fuck you,’”, Corgan recalls. “‘Go ride around in a white van for the rest of your life.”
Jimmy:
Chamberlin becomes apoplectic when he hears Corgan’s account. “In the middle of the last tour, Billy said it was the agent’s fault, then it was the band’s fault, then it was the fans’ fault,” the drummer says. “Yes, in the past, I was a destructive human being. I was a complete drug addict and a complete loose cannon, but I’ve taken responsibility for my life.”
Those looking for a dispassionate, objective account of what occurred to so-quickly submarine a 20-year working relationship are sure to be disappointed, but those looking for a bit more context around the departure and the states of mind — at least as presented to an interviewer — of the principals will want to pick up a copy of the magazine.
