Blair has released the December newsletter today, which amongst other things gives us a pretty good idea as to where songwriting is at. Here’s a snippet:
Something that might be encouraging to some Tool enthusiasts is that while riding with Danny to Chili John’s yesterday, I heard a lot of new Tool music (sans Maynard). This was the most new material that I’ve heard so far, although a few of the riffs and arrangements were familiar. So, what did I think? Dare I say that it sounded like… Tool (some of it reminiscent to earlier Tool stuff, with other parts pushing the envelope), and I assume that it will sound even more like Tool once the vocal melodies, etc. have been added. To answer your next question, I cannot say how far along in the writing process the band is. If I had to GUESS, I would say more than half way (and keep in mind that in the past, at least, the writing went faster once the first few [more complex] songs were finished).
He also mentions that there are a couple of Tool projects on the horizon, however at this stage he can’t confirm when they may become available. He did mention January 5th as a date you’d need your tree down by, but whether that’s code for some kind of release date is anyone’s guess.

- The last A Perfect Circle album came out in 2004. Are you guys against putting out another one?
Billy Howerdel: No, I’d love to—when the time is right. It would be awesome. I’m trying to write songs with that in mind, but … right now, I’m focusing most of my energy on a new Ashes Divide record, which is under way with 11 songs. Still working on finishing vocals and writing lyrics, and hopefully get that thing mixed in January or February.

Adam seems to have recently posted a pic on Instagram which may or may not hint towards a video for The Pot. The photo includes the tags #whyseeagel and #hottep, the latter which is speculated to be an anagram for The Pot
Discusses the creative process in Tool. Basically Adam, Justin and Danny write most of the music, and then Maynard comes in to add his parts. At this point Maynard and Danny start working on the emotion and dynamics of the music, while Adam and Justin polish the harmonics and rhythm.

February issue of Rhythm on sale now Featuring Tool's Danny Carey

- What stage are you at in the writing process for the new Tool album?
Danny Carey: We have 6 or 7 really good frameworks that we’re working on. We’re over half way in my opinion. The first tune is always hard to get polished off. It seems like on every record we have this big, epic thing like ‘Rosetta’, ‘Wings for Marie’ or ‘Lateralus’. That’s the one we’re focusing on now. Once we knock out that, the other songs fall into place around it. We’re right on the fringe of knocking that big one out. We’re all excited and it seems to have progressed really well.

At this point Maynard and Danny start working on the emotion and dynamics of the music, while Adam and Justin polish the harmonics and rhythm. Implication to me is that they haven’t reached the stage where Maynard is involved yet, as Danny pointed out he’s busy with APC. Danny prefers having Maynard in as early as possible.
- Volto! recorded with Joe Baressi in Danny’s rehearsal space. Every track was one take recorded onto tape. They hope to release it early 2013. New album seems to be called "Incitaire", features tracks Grip It, Gillz and Drumbreaux. Reviewer gave it a 4/5
- Danny has played on some Collide tracks for their new album
- Has a side preoject with cEvin Key from Skinny Puppy and John Frusciante in the pipeline
- Also has some demos from Richard Barbieri from Porcupine Tree, so presumably may be recording with him
Maynard James Keenan Discusses Donkey Punch the Night
Right now, there's a Tool fan angrily venting about the lack of a new Tool album in some dark corner of the Internet. Right now, Tool frontman Maynard James Keenan is most likely working on something other than a new Tool album.
Tool: "You can’t really take yourself too seriously"
Thu 7th Feb, 2013
Tool have always been a band that defies expectations, so what can we expect when they hit our shores in May? JODY MACGREGOR has a brief chat to Adam Jones and Justin Chancellor to find out.
David Farrier: I hear you are working on a big “Lateralus” type song for this album… how is that coming?
Danny Carey: Um, really good. I mean we’re still – believe it or not! – still working on it [laughter] – it’s like an ever-evolving thing, it’s probably going to turn into a thing that’s like, uh, a big trilogy type of feel to it, sort of life, just like Disposition and Intension and Triad, like on the Lateralus record or something. It will probably be over a 20 minute piece when it’s all finished, so it will be a good part of the record. We’re dealing with it in sections, but it’s coming together really well, we’re having lots of fun working on it, that’s for sure.

- The song “Dear Brother” is dedicated to several people who passed away, including the Beastie Boys’ Adam Yauch. Is that who you were thinking of?
- Well, you know the Beastie Boys gentleman, that was a sad day when I got that news. It also pays tribute to our friend Edward Willie, Jr. from Uncle Scratch’s Gospel Revival — they’re a band who opened up for us, out of Ohio in the area where I was born. And Ray Beckwith was an Australian winemaker, who, in a way, reinvented the wheel in winemaking. He discovered the relationship between pH and acid balance in wines. They really didn’t take Australian wine too seriously before him.
- What are your fondest memories of MCA?
- I actually never met him. I just really enjoyed the music. When their first record came out, I was definitely a fan. To watch them progress and evolve in the way that they did from their first album until their last, it was quite inspirational to watch their personal transformation. It’s very unfortunate he didn’t make it to the next level.
We are proud and excited to announce the imminent release of "Nothing's Matter", the complete and concise work of "M.T.Void" an experimental collaboration, of the sonic kind, between Justin Chancellor and Peter Mohamed (Piotr "Glaca" Mohammed from Sweet Noise)
TOOL will release a handcrafted, bonus-laden, limited edition package of their original debut EP, Opiate, on Mar. 26 to mark the 21st anniversary of the six-song release
The anniversary edition is limited to 5,000 copies and features art direction by Adam Jones, illustrations by legendary artist Adi Granov and design packaging by Mackie Osborne, who has collaborated with TOOL on many albums including 10,000 Days, Lateralus and Salival as well as posters and merchandise.
The 5,000 copies will be broken down as 5 x 1,000 runs with each set featuring a variation of the exterior graphics and included bonus items which include a new stereoscopic image for fans to use with their glasses from the 10,000 Days packaging.
The packages will only be available via TOOL's website (www.toolband.com) on Mar. 26 and there will be no pre-orders. A limit of three packages from each of the 5 x 1,000 versions will be in place. More details to be announced soon.
- You mentioned earlier that you guys are in writing mode. What’s the status of new Tool music?
- I guess you wouldn’t be doing your job if you didn’t ask. [Laughs] It’s unfortunate that we haven’t put anything out in a while, but you know, we’ve changed as a band. It’s just like a marriage—you grow older, people change, and you’ve gotta adapt or move on. We’ve become even more eclectic and distant, so getting things done and getting together is very hard. There are a lot of other interests. But what I really want people to know is that it’s not a bad thing. I’m serious. I think there’s a little more respect now, and when there’s compromise, it’s a little more open. I don’t know if that’s just a matter of getting older and going, “Ah, fuck it,” or what. [Laughs]
I’ve been with these guys a long time, and we’ve outlasted all of our peers. I mean, I try to think of the bands we came up with that haven’t broken up or broken up and gotten back together, and I can’t think of one band. OK, the Melvins. But that’s it. And we kind of set that up early by deciding that no matter who does what we’re gonna split everything four ways. Some decisions have to be unanimous. Others are put to a vote. We’re really involved in the business side. We write our own checks. But as far as the writing? It’s been a little more lax—as in relaxed. But it’s nice. We live kind of cushy lives now, so we get together when we want. It makes everything go slow, which is unfortunate—we all would have liked to have been done with a new record a long time ago—but when it’s done, it’s gonna be good. And that’s the point. We’re not gonna put out something that sucks just to put it out. We also had two really bad things happen, things that I’m not gonna get into, that set us back emotionally and mentally. But we’re past them now, everybody’s recovered, and that process has kind of actually added to us focusing on being creative. So maybe sometimes bad things happen for a reason.
Eddie Vedder also came out on stage and watched the show while drinking the wine straight from the bottle then after the song was over Maynard walked over to him and eddie topped off maynards glass

This is the Plan B Toolbox Modular Synthesizer, built for Danny Carey of Tool which will make it's public debut with Tool on Saturday, April 27 at the Rod Laver Arena, Melbourne, Australia - replacing the iconic Synthi AKS Danny has been using for nine years. This was filmed in Danny's studio just before it was packed into it;s road case for the trip.
- You probably get sick of questions about how the record’s going, but – I mean you’re in a studio making new material, then you’re preparing to tour with older stuff – how does all that sync up in your brain?
- We are really just in a rehearsal space at this point, we never really get into a proper studio until everything is completely written, then we book time and knock out the recording process as quickly as possible. So we’re still like in the writing mode. So we’re in the rehearsal space here, so we start our rehearsals playing through the old songs to get the cobwebs out of those: we have a gig coming up, then we start working on the new things. So that works out OK, that way.
- I read in a recent interview that you’re working on, I guess, the “Lateralus” of this album – your big song that’s going to define the whole record – how’s that coming?
- Um: really good. The 100 Greatest Drummers of Alternative Music
#29 Danny Carey (Tool)
Unlike Neil Peart and his similar chops-monster predecessors, Tool drum hero Danny Carey is a surprisingly restrained player. The six-foot-five Kansan approaches Tool's epic tracks with a shrewd pop sensibility — this is the same player who worked in the studio with Carole King in the early '90s — letting the band's odd-metered alt-metal grooves breathe rather than piling on percussive data. A certain grunge-era cheese clung to Undertow, Tool's 1993 debut album, but Carey's pummeling, tom-heavy beats still maintained a sinuous charm. Over the years, Carey's instantly recognizable sound, marked by sampled hand drums and a signature "deactivated" snare, has become as integral to Tool as Maynard James Keenan's eerie, theatrical whine.
Most Booming Moment: The final minute of "Schism," from 2001's Lateralus, featured a relatively rare taste of Carey in full-on prog-fusion attack mode.

по поводу нового альбома:
цитата:
I wanted to make a note about another part of the evening. Tool sold VIP packages that included access to soundcheck, and a Q&A session with guitarist Adam Jones. I went along to see what it was all about –the first time a journalist had been allowed to go along for the ride.
The fans there were diehards. Many had amazing tattoos and t-shirts and were gripping various bits of obscure Tool back catalogue they hoped to get signed. One woman had painted her entire chest and neck with Tool art. These fans were hardcore.
We were let in to watch three songs be soundchecked. We were allowed to stand about 20m from the stage as Maynard, Danny, Adam and Justin belted through 'Vicarious'. In typical Maynard fashion, Maynard then left. After that, we were permitted to go up to the barrier. The three remaining members chatted with the fans, before launching into two more songs.
After this we were taken backstage for an hour-long session with Adam Jones. He was a true gentleman. Polite and genuine, he told us he didn’t have a format for the session, but would take us through some of his guitar techniques and philosophies and then open up the floor to a Q&A.
It was an insightful time, as he gave a candid chat about the writing process: how a song comes together, then an album, then the overall feeling which leads to things like cover art. He made it clear he is fan of Tool, and that the band only release stuff they’re proud of. He explains that’s why the live DVD they recorded never saw the light of day. They weren’t happy with it – so assumed the fans wouldn’t be, either.
Other tid-bits? A new album this year, hopefully. “Don’t quote me on that!” insisted Jones, however. The next album will probably be available digitally. “It’s a hard transition to make,” explained Jones.
He was charming and self-deprecating, referencing his greying hair and age, as well as his penchant for conventions and comic books. When the session came to a close, he took the time to individually chat to each fan, and thanked them for coming. He says on stage he doesn’t get to really interact. Here, he gets to.
- no unreleased studio material - enough material for 10 songs and still aiming for end of year (but don't quote him) - yes, there are plans to release the next album digitally
VH1 CLASSIC ROCK RADIO REPORT "OZZFEST JAPAN A HUGE SUCCESS"
Japan rocked this weekend thanks to the first-ever Ozzfest Japan. The two-day music festival drew sold-out crowds of 20-thousand fans both days to a venue outside of Tokyo. The audiences saw sets from Black Sabbath, Slash, Tool, Slipknot and dozens of other groups. Ozzy Osbourne’s wife and manager said in a statement that she is “thrilled”with the success of the event, adding, “The fans really loved the extraordinary mix of international and Japanese artists. Since we had such a great reception, we’re already in dialogue about a 2014 Ozzfest Japan.
NAME AT BIRTH: DILBERT CAREY PLACE OF BIRTH: IN THE SHADOWS OF THE NETHERWORLD AT THE CEMETERY OF STULL, KANSAS MUSICAL EDUCATION: Dilbert (Danny) only began playing drums as a way of punishing (nay, torturing) his parents after being grounded for two weeks for attempting to derail a freight train by placing his father's rare three-legged Buffalo nickel (1937-D) on the tracks. He mastered the drum solo of "In-a-gadda-da-vida" by the Iron Butterfly on the third night, and then moved on to "Symphony NO. 3 by Penderecki. He claims that he hasn't practiced since.
NOTES: It is believed by some that Danny has an identical twin brother who is the actual drummer in the Grammy award-winning, multi-platinum record selling prog-metal band "TOOL" and that Dilbert changed his name to Danny for this reason. To my knowledge, no one has yet been able to confirm this strange rumor.
Danny (or Dilbert) is also a reputed member of the L.A. chapter of "The Hellfire Club," being the black-masked driver of one of their stealthy Garia LSV golf carts (expired registration). He, too, secretly aspires to be the lead guitarist in Volto!
Danny is a licensed to kill Fugu chef, season ticket holder of the WNBA Los Angeles Sparks, and is currently in the process of restoring a civil war era submarine to use as a party retreat in his pentagonal-shaped swimming pool.
FAVORITE MUSICIAN: Damien Storm (for LINN DRUM MACHINE programming).
FAVORITE MEAL: Patiopoulo-Perdikaki road kill.
FAVORITE MOVIE: Gummo II, which he often watches while eating peacock tongues grilled on the manifold of his favorite pickup truck.
OTHER INTERESTS: Staying between the lines with the "Gangsta Rap Coloring Book", contemplating "The Reimann Hypothesis" (i.e. Problem 8), and searching for treasures in boxes of 1965 Quisp cereal (hoping to find a Quazy Flux Cubitator, "where all secrets of the planet Flumbot are stored.")

DRUMMER DANNY CAREY SAYS NEW TOOL ALBUM MOST LIKELY TO SURFACE IN EARLY 2014
“It’s still the 3 of us right now and 4 of us it will be soon, you know, just working on all our parts and working on our compositions together,” Carey says, referring to Keenan’s current absence from the recording sessions. “Stylistically, we’re trying to push things in different ways, but it always comes out sounding like Tool no matter what we’re trying to do. We’re working everyday on it and it’s going really well, so I’m hoping we’ll get into the studio by the end of the year.”
When we asked about a possible 2013 release date for the album, Carey responded, “I doubt it. Right now, since we haven’t started tracking stuff at this point, it’ll be hard. We could have the record finished by the end of the year — that’s a possibility, but the logistics of getting it manufactured and getting the record company in line and all this stuff, I doubt we’ll be able to get it out before Christmas. We’ll see how it goes. Most likely, it’ll be early 2014.”

MAYNARD JAMES KEENAN TEASES 2014 TOOL ALBUM + NEW MATERIAL FROM A PERFECT CIRCLE AND PUSCIFER
Fantastic news from Mr. Maynard James Keenan! The anticipation for new Tool and A Perfect Circle material has left countless Keenan fans shivering in the fetal position. However, the singer has just hinted at news that Tool fans have been waiting for with bated breath.
It’s no secret that out of Maynard Keenan’s three current musical projects, Puscifer have been his top priority in terms of new releases. In fact, Puscifer have put out a total of nine releases since both Tool and A Perfect Circle delivered their last offerings. Fans of Tool and A Perfect Circle have been hounding Keenan about new songs for the better part of a decade, and the vocalist offered a response over the weekend.
On Sept. 7, Keenan took to Puscifer’s Instagram account to post the following:
For my 666th IG photo, I’d just like to say… Music is happening on ALL fronts. Always. #lightenupfrancis#shitupandletmework #tool2014 @aperfectcircle @tool @puscifer
During our latest interview with Tool drummer Danny Carey, the master percussionist also stated that 2014 would likely be the year of Tool. “Right now, since we haven’t started tracking stuff at this point, it’ll be hard,” Carey shares about a 2013 Tool release. “We could have the record finished by the end of the year — that’s a possibility, but the logistics of getting it manufactured and getting the record company in line and all this stuff, I doubt we’ll be able to get it out before Christmas. We’ll see how it goes. Most likely, it’ll be early 2014.”
As for A Perfect Circle, Pause and Play is reporting that the band is scheduled to release a new album, ‘Three-Sixty,’ on Nov. 19. But more than likely that’s a mix-up, as it was just announced that APC are in fact releasing a box set collection of rarities, live performances and more titled ‘A Perfect Circle Live: Featuring Stone and Echo,’ which will drop Nov. 26.
Get excited, people! And stay tuned for more Tool, A Perfect Circle and Puscifer updates as news continues to break.

“I think that can be kind of weird sometimes, when you see “the greatest hits,” no, no – “the greatest greatest hits.” Releases by a record label that the band had nothing to do with, and there’s several versions of the same thing, over and over again. That’s kind of why we did the DVD and the box set. If you’re going to release a greatest hits, we should also offer something that’s not just the old recordings, rearranged.” MJK

TOOL’S ADAM JONES REVEALS PLANS FOR NEW ’10,000 DAYS’ MUSIC VIDEOS
October 3, 2013 10:32 AM
The current talking point of Tool fanatics is, of course, the experimental act’s next album. However, it seems like the band, or at least guitarist Adam Jones, is actually working on a new music video for a track off Tool’s 2006 studio album, ’10,000 Days.’
Tool is a band that constantly surprises its fans. Each new album, music video and even album packaging runs on unpredictability, but even by Tool’s standards, this update from Jones can’t help but turn heads. The axeman recently took part in a Guitar World Q&A session with fans, where he spoke about future videos for ’10,000 Days’ material.
Adam Jones has been the creative force behind the bulk of Tool’s videography, although he did not direct the clip for ‘Vicarious,’ the sole ’10,000 Days’ track to receive a music video. When asked why there hadn’t been an Adam Jones video for a song from ’10,000 Days,’ the guitarist offered a fascinating answer:
"There are, we just haven’t finished them yet. We ran into a really big snag because the first video is all CGI [computer-generated imaging] and we had some vicious production problems. The company we started with kinda screwed us, but luckily my friend’s company is bailing us out. Since he’s helping us, they can only work on it when their schedule is clear. But it’s gonna be great. When I go home, practically all my time is spent on it.
I thought the CGI process would be a lot easier than physically filming something, which is what we’ve always done in the past. But it’s actually a lot harder to get action down and get it moving and looking right. Plus, you can say, “The character has 15 eye lashes. Can he have 16?” You can get super picky. So at some point you have to shoot for 100 percent and try to get 70. We’re also doing pre-production on the second video, which will be all stop-motion."
Adam Jones also shared some info on Tool’s prior plans to create a live DVD along with working with film legend John Carpenter:
“Yeah, we’ve talked about it. We had shot a bunch of live concert footage and were going to put out a DVD, but it turned out to not sit very well with our band. We were like, What can we do that’s more epic than just a live DVD? I think we’re just going to keep shooting stuff, and when we’re ready, we’ll put something out. Of course, we’d like to do something really epic, like the movie version of The Wall, but movie deals are really tough.
Here’s a hilarious example: [director] John Carpenter was putting out Escape from L.A. and they wanted an original Tool song. We said, “Well, you’re not getting an original, but maybe we’ll give you an older one.” But then we realized John Carpenteris a musician. So we were like, “Wait, let’s do a song with John Carpenter!” [laughs] The last thing we heard was the studio wanted half the rights to the song, our record company wanted the other half and John Carpenter’s people wanted the other half. [laughs] So we were like, “Ah, f—k it!” and gave them an older tune. Basically, there’s a lot of red tape in trying to get a movie made. But if we can—or if there’s anyone out there that wants to facilitate a Tool movie—I’m totally open to it.”

TOOL MAKING HEADWAY WITH NEW MATERIAL
A couple of weeks ago I visited the Tool loft to try and get some kind of idea as to how things were progressing with the writing sessions now that the band was back hard at it. Well, I am happy to report that there has indeed been a lot of progress as far as new material goes, especially with the lengthy so-called "epic' piece that the guys have been arranging for quite some time now.
Shortly after I arrived, before taking to their respective instruments, Adam suggested that everyone should first have a listen to what they had recorded during the previous session in order to make sure that all were in agreement with certain recently added sections. And listen they did. In fact, to give you some idea - my parking meter expired twice before they were done. And judging from the smiles on their faces, it seemed that, for the most part, Danny, Adam and Justin liked very much what they were hearing and that after some finishing touches, the 'epic' tune would be ready for Maynard to do his thing. (During some of the more melodic passages, I was trying to envision the vocals which, to me, brings it all together.)
After a bit of discussion about some rapid-fire triplets in one section, I asked Danny if he was going to be able to knock out the piece in one take when it came time to track it? His response was to smile and bury his head in his hands, which I will let the readers interpret for themselves. As for the song itself, without giving too much away, it features complex time signatures, interesting harmonic structure and expanding effects processing - similar to what fans of Tool have come to expect - only now, perhaps not surprisingly, the band has taken it to the next level.
Okay, having given you this bit of an update, please note that I am NOT suggesting in any way that the band is ready to go into the studio any time soon. I honestly have no idea as far as any recording timetables go. I am also not sure how many other songs are near completion at this point. Nor do I know at what stage the vocals might be at for ANY of the new material. All I am saying is that as far as this one particular song goes (albeit, a very lengthy one), it was a LOT closer to being finished (instrumentally, speaking) than the last time that I heard it, and that fans of Tool's music will certainly not be disappointed.

- What about future recording plans with APC? - I hope to, but I know Maynard is in full Tool mode right now. They’re writing a new record, and I have given him some songs that maybe he’s going to look at, but I don’t know how he does with juggling those things at the same time. I’d like to get an APC record underway. But I don’t know – I’m just leaving it up to him and what his schedule allows. I’ll be there when he’s available.

Peter Grenader on Danny’s Toolbox Synth
an exclusive insight into the Toolbox Synth that he designed for Danny prior to the recent Australia/NZ/Japan Tool tour
"I met Danny Carey through Skinny Puppy’s cEvin Key, who I had partnered with on the reissue of two of our modules – the Model 15 VCO and Model 37 LFO via Subconscious Communication. I was originally brought to the Tool studio in Hollywood to give them both a quick run through of Danny’s Buchla 200, specifically the MARF module – a very rare contraption which I had programming experience with. This led Danny to contract me to repair some of his analog arsenal, which runs deep.
I hit it off with Danny immediately. I’ve been in the synth building business for over ten years and in the process I’ve had the good fortune of working with some famous musicians and I can say that Danny is a refreshing exception to any stereotype you may wish to apply to artists of this calibre. He does not take himself overly seriously, approaches his career with humility and looks down to no one, proving this by the sincere and gracious respect he grants to everyone he deals with. I just wanted to premise with this information, to verify that everything you’ve probably heard about him that backs up this confession is 100% true. He is a seriously stellar individual by every measure.
Along the way of doing these repairs, he mentioned that he had been buying up some of my Plan B/EAR analog synth modules as he found them on eBay and in that conversation he expressed interest in the possibility of putting a performance system together to replace the sSnthi AKS Tool had been using live for years. This is where I employed the benefit of my own experience – I didn’t push him on it. I assumed if he was serious that I would hear about it again and felt that was the best way to handle it. A few weeks passed, and he indeed expressed his intention and that’s when we got serious – as we had to: the system would be required for their 2013 Australian/New Zealand/Japan tour which was 3 1/2 weeks away.
I immediately blocked off this time and set off to create an instrument which not only complimented Tool’s unique timbral legacy but offered integration possibilities for both electronic and acoustic drums. This began with a tasteful yet heaping swath of bling – the case – and for that I contracted my long time friend and unquestionable genius composer/sculptor/instrument designer Chas Smith, who conceptualized what would become this masterpiece of aluminum and stainless steel three weeks later. He opted for Danny’s favorite color (Laker purple) for the primary finish and embellished it with a unique polished 1/4 inch thick plasma cut aluminum Tool logo gracing it’s back. The 3/8 inch aluminum plates which make up it’s body are held together by 124 inset stainless steel socket bolts – much more than necessary, but what you come to expect when an artist conjures a box. Further modelling came with the 1/2 inch grooves routed into the body plates. Nine groves per side, commensurate with Tool’s nonogon (nine sided) logo arranged in a 1, 2, 3, 2, 1 pattern with obvious numerology attached.
Concurrent to that, I had a hell of a lot of work on my end and this is where working with Danny paid dividends as he placed his complete trust in me and stayed out of my way except when needed, which is exactly what I require when faced with these sorts of challenges. I’m not necessarily proud of this personality trait, I have however come to realize it’s a rather indelible marking. I knew I could call him with little warning and he would make himself available, which he did on countless occasions at all quadrants of the clock.
Along with my preparing my own modules, a challenge as some of them had not been produced in years, I knew that we would need more than I had to offer and the final result in this co-op manifested – one row of the four consisted of instruments by friends and fellow manufactures Malekko Heavy Industry, Make Noise, Doepfer and Intelligel. Within my own gear, a few were new and had never been built before – namely the Model 7 ELF Panner, The Model 12 Mark II Dual filter and Model 11/13 Mark II Evil Twin Filter, which were handmade SMT protoptypes using production grade printed circuit boards as I could not risk the complications of point to point perfboards facing the abuse of baggage handlers and Customs inspection.
Long story shortened, we made it. I received the case on time from Chas and the module preparation completed, I had three days before their departure to Australia for the gargantuan task of wiring the chassis for power, testing and conducting a brief summary with Danny on it’s operation at the Tool man cave before we packed it into it’s matching purple road case – literally 90 minutes before he left for the airport. Being thorough, Danny videotaped the entire three hour session which he reviewed extensively on the plane trip over the pond.
Job done and challenge met, any hope of relaxation after this three week ordeal vanished when I received news from Danny a few days after he and it shipped off that the instrument was held up at Australian Customs and when finally released days later, ferried to the wrong city. After awakening from the coma that proceeded this email (kidding, but just) it was Carey’s long time friend cEvin Key who sent me an image of Danny with the instrument in the green room of the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne. It had arrived just an hour before their soundcheck for the evening’s performance. What echoed through the world then was not the synth, but the sound of my other shoe dropping.
It was an amazing experience, with an amazing set of partners, the apex being one of the most legendary drummers we have known. A true gentleman who I am both humbled and honored to call a friend. I think I speak for the world when I say I cannot wait to hear where his mind takes this 50 pound pile of aluminum, stainless steel and silicon."

MAYNARD JAMES KENNAN SAYS NEXT TOOL ALBUM IS “A LONG & VERY TEDIOUS PROCESS”
Even though Maynard James Kennan has been been active with A Perfect Circle and Puscifer, he hasn’t released an album with Tool since 2006. In a new interview with Rolling Stone, Kennan discussed why Tool has been so inactive:
“I don’t write the music. They write the music. I wait for them to bring music to me. They tend to go back over and over stuff. It’s a long process. For a person like me, it can be a very tedious process.”
Kennan also added:
“In some ways, they are bigger perfectionists. But you can only help support their talent so long. They don’t have to go through it 700 times. They can trust that first thought. But that’s their process, so you gotta let them do it.” And is that process happening? “I couldn’t tell you,
However Kennan also wants to continue “pushing boundaries and limitations”.
“But as an artist you don’t want to become a greatest hits version of yourself, either. You want to push the boundaries. You want to figure out how can you challenge yourself to discover something new, discover something different about yourself. What are your limitations? What avenues can you push and expand? That is life. I don’t have any interest in coasting yet.”

Puscifer answers the enduring question of what exactly Puscifer is with a new DVD release titled ''What Is…,'' which is set for a Nov. 26 release via Puscifer Entertainment. This is the accompanying CD soundtrack. The two-hour sketch comedy show-meets-concert film builds upon and punctuates the multimedia format of the band's live performances with skits from the stable of Puscifer characters such as Billy D, Hildy and Major Douche woven into the performance footage of the Maynard James Keenan led quintet. ''Being surrounded by so many talented and creative people is an endless source of inspiration. This film only scratches the surface of how deep our proverbial rabbit hole goes. 'What Is…'s Puscifer is meant to conjure as many questions as it answers,'' explained Maynard James Keenan. Puscifer's concerts have been praised for their out-of-the-box take on what a live performance can be, with the Orange County Register saying ''the production matters as much as the music,'' and describing the event as ''a thought-provoking, senses-jabbing statement on a variety of topics.'' The Dallas Morning News called the evening ''an idiosyncratic experience,'' while the Austin Chronicle referred to the concert as a ''multimedia prop dramedy.''

Tool to add further Mexican dates?
As spotted by Umadbrah? on the forums, there are some rumours going around that Tool will be adding further dates to their Mexican jaunt. Here’s a Google Translation:
"As many of you know, TOOL visit Mexico for the first time in its history. And no, his appearance at the festival Cumbre Tajin 2014 will not be the only one in our country.
Through a close source, we’ve learned that Californians veterans offer concerts in the cities of Guadalajara, Monterrey and Mexico City, all in the month of March."
Tool have played Mexico before in 1994, so their statement of first time ever is not entirely correct. Hopefully the rest of it is true though, and it should come as no surprise since I doubt Tool would come together just to play a single show.

Tool is another in a (too long of) line of great “1990’s bands” that I have wanted to see but never got the opportunity, for one reason or another. I have been getting many of these types of bands off my bucket list the last few years, Soundgarden, Rancid, Mudhoney, etc. But Tool was one that hadn’t really crossed my mind as a possibility for some reason. Needless to say, once I saw that Tool had announced some random new tour dates with the first show being in Spokane, an hour from home, I had to go. It’s not very often that a band of this stature hits Eastern Washington, much less as a tour opener.
Being most familiar with Undertow and Ænima, I was hoping to hear a bunch of Tools older songs that I knew plus some other gems that I might not have known much about. To that end, the band did not disappoint. We got two “sets”, although they were pretty darn short. I am not sure the point of the twelve minute intermission 6 songs into the show, but who am I to complain?

VIP experience / march 4th Spokane Arena, US
After getting our VIP lanyards and some sexy red wristbands, we were ushered to a conference room, aptly called “The Champions Room.” We took our seats and spent some time talking among ourselves. I have to say that it impresses me how quickly die-hard Tool fans start talking like old friends. The excitement was on everyone’s faces and there was no way we could contain ourselves, even if it meant preaching to the choir.
Adam shows up, shyly peaking around the corner at us. His first act of the afternoon was to let us know how nervous he was. This was a great insight into how down to Earth he is. It is easy to forget that these rock gods are mortal men like you and I, but his honesty and friendliness were apparent from the start. Everything from this point will be paraphrased (as far as insights, questions and answers) since I’m not a fucking stenographer and couldn’t record it. The no camera thing is quite serious. Be sure to only bring your camera phone and take pictures only when they say it is okay. Not saying you can’t sneak a few covert shots (I know many did) but who knows when they would draw the line.
He started off giving us some insight into how some of the songs are written. Everyone brings their riffs into the loft, throws them around and then start plugging them together, experimenting with what sounds right. Things that sound shitty can end up sounding great, which gives everyone else ammunition for when their stuff gets rejected right out. It was fun listening to Adam talk about this creative process as being very organic and collaborative, a marriage of 4 very different egos, trying to make something new. During this discussion we got to hear Adam jam to Jambi with a click-track he had on his Iphone (the highlight of this bit, besides the intimate shredding of the guitar we were treated to, is when… I think… the phone fell off the chair and unplugged, mid song. Funny and jarring moment). He followed up with a quick clinic on the different rhythms they use; overlaying dissonant beats that meet up at the right moment to punch you in the nuts. Little bits of Lateralus and Pushit were used as an example of this theory. All I can say is “Pass the God damn butter.”
The Q&A started after that. Adam was far better at this portion than I think he thought he would be. Very natural and relaxed. He made sure we knew we could ask about anything even when the next album is coming out, though nobody tried to pry into that one after he assured us that they ARE in fact working diligently. There were some great questions from the group, which was fun. Nobody asking what his favorite brand of peanut butter was. I’ll give a couple of examples… again, highly paraphrased (if you were there and can remember more, please post them in the comments!):
Q: What do you think about when you are playing? A: My laundry. No, seriously. My mind will wander and I’ll suddenly jump back in and remember where I’m at. Don’t get me wrong, I take it seriously and I’m playing with heart, but it happens. Q: What kind of amps and pickups do you use to get your great sound? A: It is more about heart and attitude than what you are using. I think I’m mediocre (uh huh) but the attitude and the sound that I bring make it sound better. Q: Do certain songs represent certain members of the band more than others? A: Obviously Maynard is responsible for the lyrics and what you hear there. The whole songs are very collaborative and are a result of everyone pitching ideas. Sometimes song titles can be a specific suggestion from someone. (Adam then talked about suggesting the name Prison Sex for that song, which Maynard thought was great). Q: You recently became a father, and mentioned in a past interview how your songs come from one idea or theme, and then are nurtured to become something else. What effect, if any, or what idea or wisdom do you hope your music can pass on to your kids? A: I really don’t want to be that guy, but I think about my son all the time. I find myself playing or practicing and suddenly realize I am thinking about my son. I don’t know how it would affect the music specifically, only that I believe it can only make it better. I could do more, but this is going to be a long post already… or IS, already...
So, after Q&A we get to line up and get an autograph, an exclusive VIP poster, and a picture with Adam. The Q&A lasted longer than they expected (Adam having more fun than he planned, maybe?) so we only got one item autographed. Posters, baby onesies, vinyls, and even a couple skulls were all signed. It was great watching him interact with his very excited fans. He had a smile on his face the whole time and made sure whoever he was talking to, got his undivided attention.
When that was finished up and Adam had departed (seriously, I could keep talking about how cool this was, but you wouldn’t believe me and I can’t do it justice) and we were waiting to depart for sound check, we got our gift bags: an exclusive VIP shirt, sticker, and tote bag. As I mentioned before, they felt bad about the delayed start, so added some things: a keychain, a beanie, and an iphone case. Scored big time! If this is how it’s going to be, I hope your VIP experience is delayed as well.
Taken to sound check. We could hear Danny pounding away while we walked outside and in through the main entrance. Got to hear Hooker and Pushit, with a short Schism jam. And some new riffs. Holy hell… if this is the base for what we have to look forward to? It was almost ethereal in sound. Don’t know how to describe it adequately. I am truly sorry that I can’t give you a better idea of what it was like. Anyway… Maynard wasn’t there. Adam told us that his throat was fucked and he wanted to save it for the show tonight. Fine by me, saving it for the real deal. It didn’t take away from the experience. Justin’s trimmed beard, gentlemanly hairdo, and specs did him right, and was disarming when coupled with this bounding bass rhythms.
Back to the CHAMPIONS ROOM to gaze at some video props. The life-size model of the Schism dude was there, as well as one of the bloated corporate – suit wearing fat cats from Parabol. Juan (our guide and band attaché for the day) was security for these props. It was great fun watching him cringe when people got too close. All in good fun though. He was awesome. Thanks for the good times, Juan!

Adam reported as saying the new album is 100% finished
In news just at hand, it’s being reported on some sites that Adam has mentioned at VIP sessions that the album is 100% finished, and will be released later this year. From an article from Aussie site Crave Online:
At a pre-show VIP meet & greet in Portland, OR on Thursday afternoon on the band’s current tour, guitarist Adam Jones confirmed to our exclusive source that the alien-prog rock maestros’ new album is “100% done” and should arrive later this year. Aside from a mention of different time signatures than their previous work, there is no other information to report at the moment. The confirmation is certainly enough to get pulses racing, however.

Tool live at Selland Arena in Fresno
March 15, 2014
On March 14, 2014 Tool performed to a sold out Selland Arena in Fresno, California. With the introduction with every song, the ecstatic fans roared with familiarity and smiling faces while the sang and many grooved along. Tool is also famous for their light show which did not disappoint, all colors of lights flying around and not without lacking, red shiny confetti shooting out at the end.
With their new album coming out in the next few months, one of the songs from it were performed and very well received by everyone in the audience.; title was only known by those that were on the meet and greet which was $500 a spot.
Tool's setlist changes every show but more or less alternating with the opening title between 'Third Eye' which was performed in Fresno and 'Hooker with a Penis.'
Check out the photos from the Fresno show in the gallery and the song list below (minus the mystery new song):

The Silver. The ‘Y’ Incision’, part of the Cal McDonald series, is experimenting with an audio accompaniment to enhance the reading experience. Jones will be composing and producing, whilst it’s up to Buzzo to perform the musical segments. Bloody Pulp Books are publishing the effort.

Recent Manhunter Screening with Maynard:
So I saw “Manhunter” last night followed by an interview / Q&A with Maynard. He mostly talked about the film specifically, but did talk about his various music projects including Tool briefly, but only when someone would ask a specific question. No new information other than him seeming increasingly frustrated with the slow process of making the new Tool album. When someone asked if Tool would consider making a concert video similar to Floyds “The Wall” he answered with “Well, if we could maybe finish the new album first then…yeah, we would consider it.” Also with regards to the new album, he asked the audience “Do I seem like a lazy person? Than stop blaming me.”
He gave some fascinating insights into his music making process and how it relates to the visuals in his live performances. Basically summarized – he pays a lot of attention to the pacing of things, not giving away too much too soon. He really lets Adam run the show when it comes to the music (something we already knew) and comes in after they have things composed to lay down vocals. He unabashedly called Adam a “control freak” when it comes to the process.
